And Yamaha conical front hub
The Shop
Coming off factory Maico he was hired to get the Yamaha open bike working - so he made it like a Maico (which worked quite well ! !). Time I'm sure your righ, the japanese copied the european bikes when they started in the sport but surly hated to "look" like them after that. Yamaha / Kayaba leading axle in this pic I believe. Not sure if Don Jones had something to do with ussing a strap for the tank (?). Ake added Maico forks, down pipe, notice in the pic the modified frame to move the engine forward more, looking for that postive Maico front end. Must have been expecting mud, notice exstensive duct-tape on the bike and helmet goggles ! Real racers wore sock and rolled them over the boots ! Lenny's pic is Carlsbad USGP where you went from mud in the morning to "Concrete" by noon! Ake was a hero when I first got into the sport, he had an awsome book on trianing and riding technique. First time I herd description for how to push the bike low when jumping, scrubing way before anyone layed the bike over.
Cool pic Lenny, thanks for looking back.
Pit Row
Damn, Ake was cool! Torsten Hallman flip-down visor, Carrera goggles, Jofa mouthguard, Hallman GP leathers, Hallman chest protector, Hallman GP gloves & (I think) Hallman boots. Swedish moto-hip back in the day. Ake Johnsson was a badass.
Didn't he win a USGP @ Carlsbad one year on his Maico?
And, it was definitely a radial and not a square barrel Maico.
