Team USA at MX Masterkids

Just got home from Belgium and here is a quick recap, forgive me if I miss someone, I am completely brain dead from the trip home:

50cc classes were Cobra all the way. Brandon Smith won the final followed closely by Tristan Lewis. Noah Aronson was third with Josh Strickland coming from way back to get a well deserved fourth.

65cc Junior - Colton Eigenmann won one of his heats as did Brandon Smith. Lewis was close to the front in his as well. In the final Eigenmann was coming to the front and crashed and then his spark plug came off. Smith was very fast as well but fell on lap 4. Lewis was definitely inside the top ten scoring valuable points. Smith and Lewis double classed and the 65 motos were back to back with the 50s. A tough double to pull off.

65 Senior - Austin Forkner pulled the holeshot on his Cobra (I think he may have holeshot all the motos) with Max Markolf and Ashton Hayes inside the top ten. Forkner led till the end, Markolf was up to a strong third when the parent ran on the teack. The lappers are the worst of any race ever at this track and there are not many rules re: helping. In the end it was Forkner second, Markolf third and Hayes 5th or 6th. (they only post the top 3 results at the race)

85 Junior - Ashton Hayes was double classing this one and was moving to the front, 4th I think, when he wadded hard and DNFed. He ended up OK, just beat up.

85cc 13-14 - Matt Burkeen was about 10th on the start of the first heat and worked his way to the lead. He was passed on the last lap by a fast Belgian, Ludvic Brevers. In the main he was hit out of the gate and then t-boned off the track in the first turn and around 5th or 6th from last. He rode hard to the end and salvaged a fifth. Probably one of the best motos I have seen him ride. Will Markolf rode well every moto but suffered from a clutch issue and a couple of untimely crashes and tangles with lappers.

85cc Senior - Aaron Leininger was 6th or 7th overall against some very fast 150s. I didn't see much of his motos because I was at the line with Matt but he overachieved in a big way.

Schoolboy under 17 - Kyle Peters got the holeshot on a borrowed 2 year old stock CRF250 and never looked back. He won by a mile lapping into the top 10. Austin Root crashed out and thought he broke his wrist. I think it might be ok, he was flying back this evening. Corey Radcliff crashed a couple of times but gained a ton of confidence running in the top 3 in both his heat races.

Schoolboy under 20 - North Carolina A rider Justin Coley had the race of the week beating GP rider Nicolas Aubin's little brother but not without a 20 minute battle that saw several lead changes including 2 on the last two straights to win by a wheel.

They keep you in suspense as to the overall for an hour or so while they add up the scores. Moving to a one moto format was not in our favor but I was cautiously optimistic. They announce the team scores starting with the last place team, somewhere in the 50s or 60s and working their way to the top 5. Each of the top 5 take the stage for a big celebration for their team. They had still not called our name as the top 5 were announced. I think this is right

5th - MX Pilotage - France
4th - Not Sure but the made a lot of noise!
3rd - Great Britain

It was between us and Belgium. We all sat there stunned while waiting for the 2nd place announcement hoping not to hear Team USA.

2nd - Belgium

Team USA wins the title. We had 60 people on the stage just going nuts. Then they played the National Anthem while the European clubs and fans cheered. It was incredible!

Look for a full write up with photos in Playground Magazine at LLs

Time for some much needed rest!

Thanks for the report. I've tried to call Forkners to see how it was going and haven't been able to get ahold of anyone.

Was just reading a report on it on a french website there was some pretty negative feedback about it. What was your view? I've never been but it seems they are trying to do a European LL but without the experience. The guy said there was no announcements in the paddock about upcoming races, the track became pretty dangerous for the small bikes, the people taking notes of the final standings got mixed up and only the top 10 were correct...

Anyway must have been a fun trip for the US kids! And they look like they have plenty of potential.

Was Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis on 85cc there? he is supposed to be the next big thing from France so far on track with Chris Pourcel and even better.

The promoter does a great job in my opinion. It is a lot of racing to get in in two days and I have suggested they go to three for next years event. As far as announcements in the paddock, they had speakers all over the area where we were but the parking was very spread out in different fields, I could see how people would not have been able to hear. They don't use FM transmitters as they do here. That being said, the classes are A,B,C,D... through I and they run in order all weekend. They run in age and bike size from smallest to largest, it is pretty easy to keep up with what is going on.

A few people were disappointed by the one moto format on Sunday, but with the weather in the morning, it made sense. I would rather run full length motos tan two short ones and they were also expecting big rain that evening.

As far as the track, it was as rough as most had ever seen it but as far as safe goes, they had way less injuries than you would see at a race in America with 1060 kids racing (more riders in just the youth classes than any race in the states) so I would say it was actually pretty safe.

I think Ferrandis is about 14 or 15. The best riders in the older age group were probably at the ADAC race. Not sure about better than Pourcel, but I have heard from several he is really fast. When Pourcel was 13 he came to LLs and got third behind Alessi and Villipoto.

We take a very good group of riders from the USA, great ids and great families. The 50 riders are among the best in the country. Our older kids are a mix of top 5 national riders and some who have never even been to a national. In fact, I don't think we had a singe LLs title winner on the team this year. Matt is a great example of the level kids we bring. With a good week, Matt will probably be top 15 or so at LLs as a 12 year old this year. If we could get Adam Cianciarullo, Cooper Webb, and some of the very top riders it would not be close. It is a big commitment for those kids going to Ponca and LLs. It is a great experience for some kids who may not get the opportunity at our nationals, to be a part of a winning team.

Cool thanks for the update. I guess it was just a dad unhappy with his experience and his kid's results.... Really cool that you guys travel all the way I'm sure your kids were happy to beat some Euros in this mini MXDN. ah ah Same goes for Nico Aubin's brother that battle he had will probably make him want to get pro even more!

Ferrandis! Believe the hype! lol Time will tell but he's won all his races in France this year and went to the Euro round in Valkensward and won in the sands. And to top it all he's really good at SX. If all goes to plan he will be on your shores in 4 years... oh wait they changed the age rule...

If you can beat the Dutch and northern Belgians in the sand, that is saying something. It has been really cool to see some of the Euros we have watched over the last 4 years move on to the next level. Ken Roczen and Jason Clermont come to mind. We may try to do an ADAC next year as Matt gets closer to the top of the age group (12-15). Sounds like thos races are ultra competitive. Looking forward to seeing Herlings make the jump next year as well.

The trip is awesome and for the most part the language barrier does not exist. Everyone speaks moto!

Nice report ... sorry to hear about the bad weather. The week before we had temperatures between 80 and 90 °F.
Ferrandis was riding the 6th round of the European championship in Montevarchi (Italy) and indeed, there was also an ADAC race in Germany.

A couple of other top kids were missing. Davey Pootches was not there nor was Damon Graulus (broken arm)

It is hard to tell how good the junior 65 riders are at Masterkids. They are still so young. Winning that race is still impressive!

The dirt there looks great!!! Looks like a mostly natural track to. Would be nice to hear what the US kids though of the track over there without all the SX style tracks we have in the US. Also, do that have some sort of Neck protection device rule at these events that make them mandatory? Seems that all the kids are wearing them in the pics.
7/16/2009 7:33am
The kids thought the track was way rougher than most tracks they have seen. I'm not aware of the neck protection rule. Two years ago none of them were wearing one, now it is about like it is in the states.

ADAC is awesome from what I hear, but they have no classes for the younger kids. One 85 class 12-15 would be great for a 15 year old (like ADAC), but we had 85 riders ranging in age from 11 to 16.

ADAC runs like a GP and is awesome experience for the older kids in 85 and MX1 and MX 2.

The Masterkids has classes for kids from age 6 and up. Neither is better, just different.

Adac is a the national series, masterkids is a one time a year event.

There is no neckbrace rule in belgium.

That track is the most un-Belgian like track in the world, if u want belgian soil, think olmen.

Thanks for the report and inside info, good read!

All of the US team members were responsible for their expenses. Cobra Motorcycles helped out the 50cc riders. Riders used fund raising and help from their individual sponsors but for the most part, the $4000 bill (average cost for a father and son) was on the families.
