Looking at a 2000 XR70R on Monday for the kids. I dunno that much about them, but price is right for sure, about $500.

If you know these bikes well, take a look and if you see anything out of place let me know!

TIA - Sean

Looks decent, hard to tell too much from pictures on the net. These bikes are pretty indestructible. As long as you can ride it and make sure it runs and shifts good buy it. You won't lose any money on it even after 4-5 years.

There isn't much too them and they're pretty bulletproof but I'd look for an 02+ CRF70, you get the new bodywork. I've seen pretty clean ones in the $600 range.

Ditto.
Check the oil to see if it looks like it's been changed sisce they bought it.
Also have a look at the frame welds for chipping paint around them. That can be a good indication that Timmy's big brother has been out catching air on it.
I quick look at the air filter may also give you an indication of it's maintenance, or lack there of. The chain is another.

The thing looks great in the photos.

Any of the ones made for 50s will work, I'd say the hot skid plate is anything left over from the 50 fad that you can get for 5 or 10 bucks new.

I bought my 7 year old an 99 XR 70, in absolutely MINT shape, this past May.
That one in the pics looks pretty good, IMO. Like the guys said above - pretty solid bullet proof bikes.

Price is a little much. Bought 2 a couple years ago (2010) models for $1000 each out the door. $5 bills seems a little much. Would pay $4 for it though.

Now if you want my suggestion, same your dough and get a KLX110L

I have the same year and was fiddling with it a little today. That one looks fine. They are kind of a dog but a decent little run around.

The price only bottoms out so much. $500 seems good.

My friends have a couple of the 70s and bought Chinese 125cc engines that fit right in.

leave it a honda stay away from any chineese rubbish, if a big guy/kid rode it the muffler mount will break off the frame and the rear spokes will be loose or some willl be missing, if that stuff is good and it dont smoke but it, if you change the oil when you get around to it and consider cleaning the air filter once and a while that thing will still run in 30 years

Agreed, by the initial logic, someone with a z50 or such should just be given away. $500 is an excellent price for a solid machine in good condition. Hell you can't even buy a new shoei for that (at retail obviously )

Randy - The 50 FAD is over, but not all the business is gone.
The Honda CRF50 is still one of the best selling motorcycles on the market.
Skid plates are not $5 or $10 bucks now, maybe not $79 like they were, but we get $50 for them all day long.

Editor- That 70 looks pretty good and $500 is a very fair price.

If you can find a few like that for 400, you should snap them up right now. You could make a couple hundred on each of them in less than a week. I'm surprised that this one lasted long enough for the original owner to hit the submit button on his post!

The two you bought new will probably be the best dirt bike "investments" you ever made. Ride them for 5 years each and they will probably have depreciated about $5 per month each. That's cheap entertainment for sure!

Dave,

The 50 Fad is over, a quick scan of ebay shows brand new Chinese skidplates for $10-$20. Perhaps I was exaggerating @ $5. I was very close to the beginnings of the "Fad" from the business side and made a decent amount of money as a contractor for an ex employee(check my location). It was a fad but just like most fads a portion of the participants continue to participate and support the good companies. I wasn't trying to insult or belittle anyones business. Sorry if it came off that way.

BBR fork springs or clutch springs? The BBR fork springs are pretty stiff if you only have kids riding I dont know if I would buy them. I ran them on my CRF70 they're pretty dang stiff. Check out planetminis.com. Lots of info over there.

I had a buddy who had a new set of BBR fork and shock spring(s) - so we were gonna put them in and try them as the forks bottom out when we ride it - us "adults"...but if it's too harsh for the kid we'll swap them back out - thanks for the heads up brrrrap
