First let me clear this up- For people that are writing on this forum about the accident at Unadilla, that werent even there, all you can do is speculate and you end up sounding stupid when you dont know what you are talking about. I am Summeys fiance, and i want to set the record straight-first off it had nothing to do with his diabetes("wildbill")-that was just ignorant to even say, his blood sugar coming off the track was 130-which is completely normal. Now for who is suppose to accept blame in this matter??? Neither person! It was just some freak accident that happens in this sport sometimes- Josh is an intellegent rider and knows not to STOP after the finish line-he jumped about half the distance they were normally jumping and was still moving off the track-Alessi and Albertson were battling and Alessi way over jumped-it was just bad all together- They both hate that it happened, but sometimes shit just happens. Alessi called Josh while he was at the hospital and apoligized for what happened-neither rider had control over this situation and it was just unfortunate-good news is they are both ok.

I hope Josh will be OK. If anything it was the tracks fault for changing the finish line .

And stick around, most people here are Summey fans already. And the way you want to nip something before it really gets rolling, you'll fit right in.Wink

Thanks for the update. Like I'd mentioned in the thread earlier today, it was just an unfortunate deal... Trying to assign blame doesn't really accomplish anything.

It's absolutely not necessary to be there to know how momentum works.

Sure, No one is to blame. But just like any other jump on the track, if you slow beyond the downside, you are subject to getting hit...Bottom line.

It was an unfortunate "accident" that could have been avoided. It has absolutely nothing to do with where the finish line was placed.

For instance Mike Alessi, Grant Langston, a couple years ago...Langston plowed into Alessi, prior to the finish jump...Langston broke his ankle, Subsequently losing his championship hopes.
should they not have turns prior to the finish area ?

It was an accident, Jeff Alessi, was going faster than Charles Summey, and the price was paid.

It is always bad when someone gets hurt, but this is Motocross...Look at the injured list. Shit happens !

Hey ckate. We just got back from Unadilla and were not aware of the crash that Josh and Jeff had.Sorry to hear about it.Josh has been doing fantastic and we hope he gets right back out there. We wish him well.My seventeen year old son also has Diabetes and has had it since he was ten. What's kind of cool is his number was also 24 when we raced minis in district four.He never let his diabetes keep him from doing the things he wanted to either like BMX,MX and Sno-X.He has Type one Diabetes and has an insulin pump with a continuous monitor that he just got. It's a pretty good set-up.We weren't aware that any AMA pro riders had Diabetes. As if motocross isn't tough enough huh?

He made the choice to let up at the finish, it's ok to blame the track but not him? The riders have every right to race to the line, it was just a bit of poor judgement on his part. Not like he pulled out into a landing zone without looking. I don't really care who you are, we may not be pros here but most have raced since before you were born, you need to let your BF handle his own business. no hard feelings.

Ok heres the deal you guys. Some of you were there and some are going off of speculation. Josh was nearly off the Track when he got landed on!! If you have seen the pic or were there then you would undertand it a little bit better. It is unfortunate that it did happen but I am willing to bet if Josh were there or not Jeff would not have rode that one out!! He landed nearly in the frickin corner!! He probably touched PLUTO before coming down on poor Josh who thought that the race was over while he was taking his goggles off.

No one was trying to dog him man, a very small mistake combined with some folks hauling to the line. You reckon speed caught it on tape?

Im glad to hear both guys are going to be o.k.,as I am a big fan of both Josh and Jeff.Hopefully all the promoters across the country will mention this at their next riders meetings,"beware when you cross the finish line, there might be a few guys in a dog fight behind you after you have crossed the line, and they arent about to back off untill they have gotten the checkers!!"

Glad to hear they are both okay, especially Josh. We've been friends with the Summey's for years. I myself am a diabetic and a pump wearer as well. When I first heard of the crash I wondered how his pump faired. Tell him the Walker's said hello and to heal quickly. Also give our love to Debbie, Tony and Courtney. Glad you are posting here!

Were you there? Did you see the pictures? Did you see him let up?

They had them go through the fence to exit the track at the corner. Stupid place IMO! Jeff jumped out to the corner. Riders were funneling down to go through the gate.

Check out the GuyB pic dude. If you're going to blame the rider, then blame all of the riders in the picture. They're all in the landing zone that was set up by the track.

Tell Josh the Peeples family said hello and well wishes - he and Jordan go WAY back to the KX60's days. I've got some video of the two of them at a GB motocross school in '91 - if they ever cross me I can embarass them :-)

Also, I'm a diabetic as well. Just found out 2 -1/2 years ago. Scheduled to go on the pump in August. Things could be way worse from what I see around us...

Welcome to Vitalis!

ok i was standing in the mechanics area, when i was waiting for my guy to cross and as i was looking over there i saw josh come across on the right side of the finish. he did not roll the jump, just didnt jump it like he was racing. he was on the far right side of the track when jeff hit the thing pinned and landed on josh.if there was pics of them in the middle of the track. that is b/c of the impack brought them there. if you weren't there no need to write about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! josh get back soon!

thanks for clearing this up. I'm guilty of speculating on this without seeing the layout. Best wishes to Josh for the rest of the season.

Looking at Gibby's pic, there's no doubt that the arrangement was really bad and I'm pretty sure it won't be that way next year.

Okay hard-headed argumentative people who weren't there...gather 'round. Here's a quick review. Smile

Here's Michael Byrne on the white flag lap. It gives you an idea of his line, and a general idea of how high and far people were jumping off that particular jump.

Here's Josh hitting the finish line jump as he takes the checkers. You get an idea of his line, and how far he jumped.

And finally, here's James Stewart as he took the checkers...

Here's where they ended up after the crash. If I had to pick a point where they collided, I'd guess it'd be about where the two Fastrac logos are alongside the track at the point where Matt Boni's front wheel is.

Add in some slow-mo audio of a spectator yelling, "Noooooooooo...." and that's about what it was like to watch it.

Now do you have a better idea of what happened?

The finish at Budd's Creek is pretty bad when going up the hill. I have had some close calls with lappers when drag racing up the hill for the finish. It sucks to be in the air and see riders coasting on the other side of the jump.

I'm just glad they are going to be ok, nobody does that crap on purpose.

Good luck to Josh and Jeff

i bet you never said that in one of your cases......most legal cases always try to place blame!

1)Silly finish line and track exit area.

2)Protect yourself at all times from behind by riding out all jumps.

3)Race through the finish line (and hope 1 is not the case and 2 is executed.

Steve runs a huge risk inviting md'ers here who say such foolish and inaccurate things like I did concerning Josh's condition at the time of his accident. Unfortunately, my mg/dl was boarderline comatose at such time thus imbibing rash judgment concerning a fellow motocrosser (and diabetic) who is the utmost of professional and capable.

That's the best "first post" in Internet history. To the point; no BS; strictly the facts; and no room for talkback.

You rock Mrs.future Summey.

Thank you so much and I am so glad they are not hurt worse.

Thanks for the "first hand" update ckate.

Don't worry too much about the internet armchair experts, most of us mean no harm but can't get through the day with out some sort of turmoil here at Moto, err I mean Vital.

Come on back and keep us in the loop during the Summey season, and if you're going to be at Millville in August, some of us Minnysotins will stop by and say hi.

Glad to hear things are looking up. Good luck the rest of the way, during the season and after......
