Thanks Steve for the stats on the pro purses. Why is it such a huge jump between the "supercross" class and the "lites" class? I think its complete BS that there is that big of a jump between the two classes. Thats like saying that the "lites" is that much lesser of a class, when in fact, there is more riders who consistently make the top ten. The lites class was stacked this past year and I think as the sport grows, it'll get worse as far as more & more competition goes. Why such a little pay out?

It seems like the "lites" guys could make more money traveling around to all the little district races where the competition isn't as thick and still make just as much money. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, why is the pay out so restricted in the lites class?Blink

The jump between class payouts isn't really a problem. The pay out is like going from bad to terrible.

Once again why so many privateers are on 450s. It's cheaper to be competitive and you get rewarded better. Their thought might be trying to push guys up faster, but when the guys that need to move up make a majority of winnings through their teams, it isn't going to do the trick. Also, I think it is noteworthy that the purse jump isn't as big at the regular season races; they want all the best guys (250f and 450) from both classes in the big bike class. Remember, the Open didn't used to even have a 250f Pro class. First it was the 80s, then the 125 support class.

no athlete makes good money till there in the highest class in the sport. Its like you want college football players to make millions per year like nfl players. Their pay is from the teams and sponsors anyways not the events.

I know guys who raced during the week, Friday night, Saturday, Hit the SX on Saturday night, and drove all night to a Sunday race. And raced 2-3 classes, or more.

Usually all part of some type of CRC or CMC series. Local pros could make a 100 grand or more in purse, plus 10's upon 10's of thousands worth of contingencies(Cash and or products or both), and tons of products from the series sponsors.

It was a better time for moto. WAY better time for moto.

Yup. And I bet the Supercross champ does not get hardly anything. Someone is making a bunch of money in Supercross and it's not the ones risking their lives. These dudes need to sit down and form a union or something. $3,500 for a 250F Supercross win is pathetic. I can make that selling junk on Craigslist and sitting on the couch all day. Dont need to train 24/7 and risk being in a wheelchair or dead.

Pro supercross in the 250f class doesn't really equate to college sports.... Even guys on the shittiest NFL teams, which would be a more relevant comparison, still make millions of dollars. The Miami Dolphins lose all the damn time and all of their players who are not on a bench all the time are still making millions. Anyone consistently in the top 40 in either class deserves to make at least enough money from racing their bike to be able to put food on their table and not be getting little to nothing for their skill and and hard work.

I honestly thought you were being sarcastic. In no way does SX have more TV time on better channels than golf, which by default means they don't have more sponsorship opportunities.

I'm not saying I agree with the purse. To compare it to the PGA purse is silly though.

Yeah, really good moto pros should be paid more money than any other sport. They are elite for sure. But, the money has to come from somewhere, which it just doesn't.

I think there's a huge gap in self-awareness here. You're comparing SX with thousands of viewers on a weekly basis to Golf with Millions of viewers worldwide. Broken down in even simpler terms: Golf Market > SX/Moto Market, Market Size = Money. This is regardless of the danger of the sport or your perceived "right" to more money based on professional dangers. If I want my brand, which is not related to dirtbikes, to get the most exposure, where do you then I would get the most value?

Why is the market smaller? There's a number of reasons; Access on a dollar level (Barriers to entry) and access to legal areas to ride are towards the top.

Next time you're at an SX, look around you and you'll see what the casual fan base consists of. Vital =/= casual fan base.

I spend way more money on golf than I do on moto, but I rarely watch golf on tv!

Just like SX, PGA does not supply the payout in total. In the PGA, each tournaments title sponsor gives the majority of the purse money. Main reason you see varying purses in tournaments. PGA collects entry fees and puts a percent toward the purse and sponsors cover the rest. If SX were to follow the PGA format, Monster would be putting up the purse money, not Feld. See how well that would fly with Monster....
