Just out of curiosity, do you guys who train on a regular basis know what your average resting heart rate is lately?
I've been doing a lot of cardio training the last six months and my average has gone from 60 down to 44, I kind of wanted to see where I am at as compared to other racers?
On the general chart it looks good, but since MX riders are some of the fittest people I figured I would see where I stack up.
I'm 59 BTW.

Greg LeMond was once almost sent to cardiac intensive care after a routine check up because the doctor didn't realize that a resting heart rate of 30 beats per minute is considered relatively normal for an elite cyclist. Eddy Merckx was reported to have a resting heart rate in the mid to high 20s...but he had a weird heart issue. His resting heart rate was in the 40s even when he was a child...before he started training.
Average adult male, untrained, resting heart rate covers a very wide range...60-100.
What I find more interesting is the max you have ever seen. My max when I was a junior cyclist...doing interval training up a steep hill (full blown aerobic failure intervals) was 230-232. I would see that after finishing an interval...it was like 210 when I stopped pushing...then it continued to rise for about 15 seconds up to that level...then rapidly fall as I got out of O2 debt. I could never get to that rate during the interval. It was always just after I stopped pushing. I think it had to do with arteries relaxing, then the heart would "runaway" for a bit as resistance in your circulatory system dropped. Good times.
The Shop
I'm 61, sitting at my desk, and I just had a small bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. mmm
After a good day of riding or racing it doesn't drop below 50 the whole night and the app shows me all kinds of warnings to go easy the next days lol
My doctor told me that the "220 minus your age" formula for determining Max Hr is really just a guideline, and that I should consider getting a Cardio stress test to determine my true max heart rate.
That is why motocross is so gnarly.
39-41 and will get down to 37. Life has always been headspins after getting up off the floor or a recliner. 43 yrs.
Keeping track of your data and comparing it to previous results is your best course of action to indicate improvement.
Comparing to other people, even ones you train with, isn't going to tell you much.
Food for thought.
Pit Row
My highest has been 202, race pace mid summer in Florida but average is 178 during a race.
I use a Polar HR chest strap for all data but my morning HR is the Apple 5 watch.
I don't know if I ever did it right or not but when I trained a lot and used to track it on my max was 204. I would try to stay in the 185 190 range while riding. If I was trying to do a fat burn jog I would have to stop and do a light power walk to keep it 165.
I remember reading that Mike Alessi claimed to have a resting rate of 28. That is amazing if true.
FWIW I'm 38 and primarily a bicycle racer.
