Title contender? What has he shown you in the last 3 years that makes you think that? He is a top rider for sure and he can certainly get in the mix on any given weekend but for 17 rounds? Absolutely not IMO.

At round 3, RV crashed on the first lap and came back to fourth.

At round 4, Reed took the holeshot while RV started outside the top 10 and came up to 3rd.

So I don't think Reed ever passed RV in 2012.

past 3 years??? 2011 & 2012 season......thats why i said , if hes still motivated ,happy & comfortable , reed is goona be dangerous! 2013 he showed a lil bit of excellence , couple top 5's & a podium & san diego he was on it , all over millsaps till that wash out. imo , reed still got some gas in that tank

What's funny to me is that when Reed isn't winning it is because he is "uncomfortable" suggesting that there is a setup issue. When the bike setup excuse isn't working out the fingers get pointed towards a mysterious illness.

Has he ever lost because he simply wasn't fast enough?

duh!!!!! of course he got beat simply because he wasent fast enough........ but stewart ( i think ) said it best, if you dont have trust in your bike or you coming into the race not feeling good about your bike setup , your not goona have good race

So getting a "couple top 5's & a podium in San Diego" along with being "all over Millsaps till that wash out" is all someone has to show you in order for you to determine that they are a title contender a year later?

I don't think anyone is saying he is the favorite, but I think he has as good a chance as Dungey or Stewart. A couple of bad races from RV and it is wide open.

The way I see it is this, Reed has a serious injury in 2012 this seriously impacted his testing time (like he had eff all) on the new 2013 bike, therefore his setup wasnt great...but there is another twist, he clearly was not well either (mainly MX not SX?) so wasnt just the fact that he didnt have a good setup. If he was on another brand he would of had the same issue i.e. lack of testing = not good setup (especially if you are the only rider on the team)

I won't be surprised if he wins a round because he's fast enough to capitalize on someone's mistake (which is what I think it would take for him to win). I will be shocked if he wins 2 and I'd bet crazy odds if you gave me everyone else vs. Reed for the championship.

Keep in mind that RV also had a serious injury in 2012 about two months AFTER Reed.

People make such a big deal about him battling with RV for ONE or TWO races 2 years ago. That literally means nothing lol

Except that he was a title contender then and probably is still now.

A lot of you guys will be eating crow here in a few months. One of the greatest supercross riders ever has one bad year and now he's barely a top 5 guy? great logic.

Wonder what his excuses will be this year. At least Stewart is being honest about it when he doesnt perform.

If Chad shows up healthy and comfortable. He is capable of running the same lap times as Stewart and RV the 2 fastest indoor riders on the planet.

But,
Is he fit enough to keep with RV or willing to push it over the edge like RV & JS for a whole season. Not so sure. I wouldn't question Chads ability or desire to beat anyone on any given night. I just think that RV has a few less miles on the clock and JS is more fired up than he is letting on. They both have a little more youth on their side and both have been some of the most physically fit riders of their generation. Not saying Chad is not motivated or unfit. But age and health issues take their toll and as much as I personally like Chad. I think he will be just a tick off of these 2 riders for the majority of the season.

I think James regrets the seasons he sat on the couch during outdoors and now a little maturer realises that he must go hard for the next few years to prove he has it to himself before it is too late.

I also think RV is on a RC like mission to destroy all in his path then walk away at the top.

Either way, If all 3 stay healthy then thats the top 3 at the end of the season with a big battle for fourth in the series between some veterans and rookies alike.

So McGrath would be a top guy if he came back now? Great logic.

So I don't think Reed ever passed RV in 2012.
If they started on the same start gate, lined up together, then you can be sure he passed him somewhere to win the two main events....

Hey TripleDouche, did Reed not sign an autograph for you or something? Comparing McGrath to my statement makes you look like a moron. MC is 40 and been out of the game for years. Comparing the two in this situation is asinine. Go back to stabbing your Reed voodoo doll in your Mom's basement.

Yes of course it does.

In MX and SX racing all riders start dead level behind a gate, you have to move in front of the rider/s lined up next to you to gain a position. Holeshot to win in SX means moving ahead of 19 (21 in 2014) other riders from the split second the gate drops till the flag flys at the end.

Passing as many riders as possible between the gate drop and the first turn can be very important Smile

Reed had some great rides and hopefully can mix it up with the youngsters this year. He has a lot of distractions and will need to stay focused on the task at hand.

When is this first race so you squids have something else to focus on?????

Reed is a legend and one of the greatest riders of all time. There can be no disputing that.

It just seems to me there are always a lot of people who either refuse to see or are unable to see when Father Time has taken some of the gifts a rider-while still great-once possessed. I imagine there were an awful lot of people who felt the same when RC took MC down for the count. Of course McGrath was the The King of Supercross, so that should be the ultimate example of how time moves on down the road for everyone who is mortal.

It's not a personal shot at Chad Reed ( I personally am a huge fan of his) to acknowledge that he is 30 instead of 23 and isn't the same rider he once was. That somewhat sad fact is true of everyone at some point.

But motocrossers are notoriously big-hearted and sentimental guys who embrace and love their history, so there are always those who want the older warrior to push back the clock one more time. Gotta love that about our fans.

I am sure Reed has "something" left in the tank and only racing will prove it....bottom line is we will not know until the gate drops on Saturday night.....The only thing I have is, why keep going back to 2012??? 2 years ago and sure Reed was on it during those last races before his crash, but things have changed since then....RV has improved....Dungey has improved......Stewart has improved and there are a lot more top 5 guys on the line that have a shot...so is going back in time going to to the first few rounds of 2012 going to be the answer?.....

Reed has a legit chance at the 2014 title. Its not always the fastest who will win this thing...its the smartest. Reed is still fast and probably smarter than most due to his experience. JS7 lays down crazy fast laps but has ended up on his head more often than not...

When these guys have their bikes dialed in and are comfortable at race pace...then it comes down to race craft......consistency is going to win this thing.

Just remember, a lot of these guys will have DNFs or big offs that will hurt their points.....

Cant wait for next Saturday..........I'm betting on Stewart and Reed....the two older horses......they know that they are at the tail end of their careers so they gonna be smart about it....Bubba, you reading this?
