Daniel Reardon beats Chad Reed in a nail biting victory at Perth Monster Energy Super XPublished: 1/11/2009

Woodstock Honda Thor Racing’s, Daniel Reardon, has taken out the third round of the Monster Energy Super X in an epic supercross battle between him and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s, Chad Reed, at the packed indoor Burswood Dome tonight.

The estimated crowd of 9,000 fans created an amazing atmosphere as they enjoyed all the thrills and spills the tight and fast full sized supercross track produced.

Reardon took the holeshot and rode consistently quick laps over the 10 lap final to hold off an incredibly fast and determined Reed. The race came right down to the wire with Reardon beating Reed by just under 0.6 seconds over the finish line. Reardon now leads the Open championship by two points over Reed.

The Perth round saw the debut of an all new Open class final format, the Round Robin, which pitted riders against each other in three different five lap heat races in order to progress to a ten lap final for positions one to twelve. There were nine heat races in total meaning that every rider raced different competitors in each of their three heats.

In an afternoon packed with cut-throat racing, it was the Australian riders who have returned from the USA to race in the series that dominated in all of their heat races with Chad Reed, Rockstar Honda Maxxima’s, Michael Byrne and Dan Reardon, cruising through their respective heats with the fastest lap times, demonstrating their superior skill over the challenging track.

Byrne came undone in the tricky whoops section in the final and was unable to finish, which left the podium open for CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s, Jay Marmont, who led the championship after the first round in Launceston to take third, with his team mate, Cheyne Boyd, returning to good form to finish fourth.

Reardon who was lightning fast all night was ecstatic about his win. “I am so pumped about the win and it was a lot of fun racing tonight. It was a great track and a great venue and I felt really good on the bike.”

Runner up Reed also commented on how impressive the venue, track and atmosphere was. “I want to thank the fans for coming out today and I am glad there was some great racing for them to enjoy. It was an awesome track and venue and congratulations to Dan on a great race.”

The 250cc class riders were tested on the technical track leaving championship front runner, Shift Motul Suzuki’s Matt Moss, to once again dominate the field in the eight lap final who finished over six seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Lawson Bopping and the USA’s Kyle Cunningham who finished third. JDR Motorsport MX Rad rider Ryan Marmont who went in to the round in second place went down hard on the whoops but got back up to finish the race in 12th.

The Monster Energy Super X will now make its way to Canberra for the fourth round on Saturday November 7.

Reed should of stayed with Zook, if Reardon can beat him then Stewy is going to smoke him this year Laughing

I was there, his starts seem to be really bad. Very tight track, arenacrossish 30 second odd laptomes. Reardon is actually looking petty good on the 450, but once Chad got a clear track he made time pretty quick.

Is it me or does he seem way off his game?

I don't take much out of this. It's a new bike, and this is really Chad's "vacation". He hasn't had an off season, and should know he needs to rest up before January.

31 second lap times, track was a joke. 10 lap final? Ridiculous. Reed does need to work on his starts BIG TIME though.

5 minute main?

Geez

I saw there were 9K in attendance, is that the normal attendance levels or was this a smaller race?

I believe Reed looked more comfortable in one year on the Suzuki than any other year but lets not get too wrapped up in discussions of the oncoming SX season in Reeds first two weeks on the Kawi.

Agree though that Reed needs to figure out his starts.

It was only a 10 lap main and Reed was coming from way back in the pack. He made up pretty good time considering.

About normal size crowd - more would definitely help secure the future of the series. I'm not a fan of the different format events ie 4 x 6 lap main, round robin, so maybe more hard core mx fans are staying home and watching it from the couch (like me)

Oz has only a population of 20 million in a country the same size as the USA. Perth is only about 1.5 million and about 2000 miles from the next city. Apparently most isolated city in the world. So crowds are always going to be small compared to the US.

He also was winning this series with almost zero time on his Zook not to say this is a view of this years SX season but it seems to me that he was much more comfortable on the Zook than he is on the Kawi maybe he just needs to adjust to the bike, maybe he needs more time to set it up or maybe he just doesn't click with the Kawi. Whatever it is he needs to get a move on the testing AND his starts. Hope he brings it to James this year as I don't want to see a routing.

they used to run sx in the same venue in the early 90's. i think its too small for a sx track. i chose not to go based on that.

The population of St Louis is only 350k (although 2.8M in the surrounding area). We get around 50,000 at our SX. I would think it would be hard to pay the bills with 9,000 unless they charge a lot more.

I just thought his corner speed is off at Geelong round compared to the zuki.
I think chad just looked 110% on the zuki, and its going to seem odd for a while.

Chad had much more time on the Suzuki before Aussie SX last year than he did on the Kawi this year. He raced the MXoN and spent time in the US testing that he hasn't had on the Kawi.

Last night was a bit weird, but still good. Event started at 4.30 in the afternoon, (obviously so it was live on tv over east at prime time) and over by 6.20.

Short night, but man the bench racing at the bar afterwards was monumental haha

If it was a 20 lap final CR would have won by 30secs.

Chads a gritty rider, the bike won't make much of a difference.

Actually, I think Reed stands a good chance of beating James when they meet in Australia... and that would be great for the American SX series if that happened...

are they going to change up the track or run the same one that reed would have been racing on for weeks? That would almost be an unfair advantage for Reed....and if reed cant get that done, there would never be a hope for any other time.

Reardon is looking good, but I wouldn't read too much into Reed's performances yet.... 10 lap main event on a very small, arenacross style track, only, what, six weeks on the bike?

Last year was quite different - Reed didn't race the outdoors in the US and signed with Suzuki around June/July I believe so by the time the Aussie Super X came around he had easily 3-4 months of time on the bike.

And the venue (Burswood Dome) is pretty small - it's basically a tennis court/small concert arena - I think it only holds about 17,000 fully packed for a concert with floor seating.
