I have a buyer for my bike who wants me to use paypal to recieve their payment. Obviously I won't ship my bike until the funds are recieved. Does anyone have experience with this? Seems safe but better safe than sorry!

Just better hope he isn't a scammer who uses a fake/hacked paypal account to send you the funds. Or after he gets the bike makes a dispute and try's to get a refund...

IMO: I would feel safer with a bank wire.

It is safe. But the fees can be very expensive if he pays by credit card

I got screwed by Paypal!! I shipped a watch that sold off eBay to a guy in Florida for $600. The guy said it was never delivered but I had tracking proof that said it was. Paypal decided in his favor and refunded him $600 and now wants me to pay paypal $600! So I lost the watch and now owe them $600!! Paypal sucks!!!!

Its a bad idea, people get screwed via paypal all the time. If he has the money via paypal, he can get you the cash.

I have done this on the buyers side.

I would advise you call paypal and talk to their security department and see what they say you have to do to protect your self.

Also remember that paypal will charge you 3% + .30 to do this.

If you go to the legit Paypal sight and see all of the money in your account and clarify with someone on customer service you will be just fine. Some people can make really nice looking e-mails that look like they were from paypal saying funds are now in your account but are fake, I have had someone try to do this to me once on a craigslist trade.

I would be careful with Paypal. There are too many scams people could pull on you. I wouldn't do it on a large transaction like this. It could be a hacked account. He could dispute the charges after he has the bike. No reason to go through paypal.

If he has the cash to pay on paypal, he has the cash to wire. Even if its a credit card, he can get a check through his credit card to give you. Shouldn't be a problem if he is a legit buyer.

I had someone file a item not recieved claim with ebay after they had signed for it. Paypal froze funds in my acct. and I had to fight for it. I won, but I hear of it going the other way more than not.

I use paypal a lot, never had an issue. That includes sending complete bikes overseas.

I use Paypal and it works fine, but for large amounts I use Email money transfer. Safe because it's bank to bank.

Fuck paypal. Had been using them for nearly EIGHT years when they shut off my account accusing me of being a fraud. They somehow got my social security messed up and thought I was someone using my grandfather's identity.... who's been dead for 11 years...

TWO appeals with management and my account was turned back on. What's funny is this all happened right when I was trying to pay for a T-SHIRT I got off ebay (evilbay...). I've put transactions through paypal over the years that were thousands of dollars and the day they decide to call me a fraud is on a $15 ebay item. Lucky for me the seller was understanding and didn't give me negative feedback for the delay of payment (he only accepted paypal).

I haven't used Paypal since, but I keep the account active just in case I absolutely have no other option.

No. The buyer cannot "cancel" the payment. It is true that the buyer can file a claim against you if he or she does not receive the item. Claims are usually decided in the buyers favor. Always purchase delivery confirmation/tracking. Always insure your item for it's actual value. If you have been communicating through e-mail try to get a phone number and talk to them. Generally you are fine, but there is always a risk...

I sold a bike and was paid via paypal, they froze my account with 4k in it as they were investigating the buyer for fraud! This all happened after the bike left my garage. 8 months later I was able to get my money after spending 1000.00 on a lawyer. I will never again use paypal for anything. I still buy some items on ebay out of need. If they won't except a USPS money order only i'm out.

X2. If has the paypal money he can get the cash. If your not comfortable with the paypal then the deal goes to cash. If he is serious about buying it, it won't be a problem. Stick to the rivers and lakes you are used to. The way I see it is that you have the product, you set the terms. Let him figure out how to pay you..... in cash.

The buyer seemed fishy to begin with, thats why I asked. Seemed to good to be true...but she didn't even ask me about any of the many after market items on the bike, which I said call for details about, and she gave me a link to paypal in her email, so
my suspicions have been affirmed.

thanks guys.

Im not going to sit here and argue with you, but I've seen it happen a few different times. of course the senders gotta be an idiot to send the items without seeing the money in hand though...

Yeah man, people buy stuff all the time with paypal and then once they get the product/ merchandise they file a dispute and with clever social engineering they get refunded and the seller loses out. Seen it happen numerous times.

Someone did that to me... I sold them a TLD helmet, one that i got for close to nothing... One of my buddies is good friends with Troy.

Well anyways, i recieved the paypal funds, shipped the helmet, and when it arrived they mutilated it, and sent pictures, and filed a dispute. I eventually had to give the money back, so i was out a helmet and money, but at least the helmet was free for me.

Paypal doesnt seem to care too much about sellers.

it is up to the seller to dictate the terms of the deal...if they really want the item you are selling then they will figure out a way to get what you need. if you felt good about it, you wouldnt have posted this thread..people use paypal everyday with no issues, but there is always that chance. go with your gut

The jury is still out on paypal, that being said, cash rules and meet in person, i don t have the extra money to take that chance, like others stated, if they have the money they should have no problem getting it to you!
