They are from the San Diego area and made the trip to Fla for the Mini-O's. We are still in disbelief. Can't imagine what the family is going through. He recently raced the MEC in Vegas. Great family.

There's a fair amount of speculation that the jump faces were deteriorating and maybe some should have been prepped between races. I don't know. I've known the promoters for a long time and would hope if someone mentioned any problems, I would think they'd take care of it.

My daughter stayed the whole week with his mom, dad, Jantz and his sister at LL's this year. I'm shaking trying to type this. Maybe it's a good thing I wasn't able to make it down there.

John, I am sorry you are going through this. All you can do is be strong for the family and remind them of the great life it sounds like they provided for their son! My heart goes out to all affected by this. The brutal side of our sport.

Bummer.

This is happening a lot more at the various amateur nationals nowadays. Seems like one a year since '05, or so. Before that, I can't recall it happening at any amateur nationals, all the way back to the 70's.

Moto heaven is filled with talent. It is always sad to hear of these incidents.

I have raced gatorback for many years, it is not a dangerous layout but it is hard pack. Given the number of motos they have to run in one day, I can only imagine how blue grooved and hard like concrete the track was.

I'm not at the track but what I've been told (for those that have been to Gatorback) it took place on the single before the drop-off on top of the large hill. I raced there last year and when hitting the single and jumping down the long drop off it feels like your 10 stories in the air because the large hill drops off in front of you and on both sides. You're probably jumping 90 ft or better with a decent amount of height just to clear the edge where the drop-off starts(a lot further if you land down the drop off as it's fairly long). For me it was a really exciting jump because of this sensation.

From what I can gather(talking to friends at todays race), there was a pretty bad lip forming somewhere on the take-off/single. Apparently someone else had a nasty crash in the same spot two motos before Jantz's. A very well known rider who I will not name said the track was in poor condition in his expert opinion.

Jantz did wear a neck-brace at LL's so I can only assume he was wearing one at the Mini-O's.

Here's a recent video of Jantz wringing out a KTM 125 when training for this year's LL. He was a talented rider and by all accounts a fine young man as well. R.I.P.

R.I.P. Jantz. Was by all accounts I've heard around the track this Evening was he was a fine young man. Godspeed.

It actually happend on the triple step up before that.. Very large kicker on the top of the lip, came off the face immediate endo, ditched the bike about halfway and landed on his feet. Saw the whole thing, the entire grandstands went quiet.

Took over 40 minutes to get the heli to the track, a lot felt he could of gotten to the hospital faster by ambulance.

Saw him ride at monster cup and here at mini o's, good rider, awesome technique. I'm really saddened by this.

So it was the big jump up onto the large hill? That's a lot of airtime too for those that have never been there. That's why I felt iffy writing that but someone else there said it was off the single right after that. His sister said he landed on his head. I know it doesn't really matter where or how because we lost someone special but in my mind I just try to imagine where?, how?, why? type questions that maybe help me ride/race safer and faster. Very sad day. Thanks for the info, click click bang bang.

Agree Lou.

A sport shouldn't eat it's young.
