Freestone Weather - Rd2 of 2012

Early look at this weekend is highs near 90 and sunny. The humidity will be a factor as dew points are expected to be in the mid 60s which should make it feel nice and steamy.

It's actually been pretty nice until the last few days. My son and I rode in the woods yesterday and that was the first time we felt the heat this year. Overall, the heat shouldn't be as bad as it has been in the past, but it's still going to be pretty warm. You race in Texas between mid-May and mid-September and it's likely to be hot and humid.

Still a walk in the park for Texas this time of year. We have had such a mild spring with heat it's quite nice. The last few years the heat has arrived early and stayed late. It's usually just at or already has hit around 100 in late May.

**Well Houston and Dallas share the same opinion.

Short mentioned that it shouldn't be AS hot as recent years, in his PulpMX Pulpcast. Which should help guys like Roczen, who will be new to it...

Normal for this time of the year in that area is only about 87 so this year looks to be more seasonal which I'm sure a lot of riders will very much appreciate in relation to what it could be and has been in the past. Although doing motos in 90 degree heat with dew points in the 60s is still not very comfortable.

I am hoping for it to be an oven this year like years past. It really shows which riders are ready for the outdoors and which ones aren't.

Not me. I've lived in Houston and Saudi Arabia all my life, so I'm not afraid of heat. But I respect it, and one of the nasty things about it is you never know when someone who's in superb shape, fully hydrated and having done all the right stuff is going to get heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. I doubt there are many guys who are in better shape than Brett Metcalf, and he was in really serious trouble in (I think) '09 or '010. I've gone out and done long runs on hot days, 10+ miles, and felt fine. Then I've gone out and run 4 miles and almost didn't make it home. It's a total unknown and unknowable.

Think it was 08. The first year when it was round 11 and in August and Brett still rode for PC.105 for the second motos.

Exactly. It doesn't matter how good of shape you are in. The body needs to sweat to cool itself. When the air is already saturated with moisture your sweat doesn't evaporate it just condenses on you. Top it off by covering yourself head to toe with heavy synthetic riding gear and you've got a perfect recipe for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

anyone wishing for an oven is a bit of a fool IMO, remember last year? do we really need more of that going on? STFU please!

Tuesday update...

Forecast still looks dry (rain wise) with temps slightly above normal. A big ridge of high pressure at 500mb is expected to build all across the south as we head into the weekend. It shows up nicely on the 500mb maps...notice that large closed high pressure entrenched all across the south. What that will do is act as a lid on the atmosphere suppressing rain chances and heating things up from where we are at today.

Its still going to be very uncomfortable with temps near 90 and dew points in the mid to upper 60s which will make it feel nice and sticky.

I fell prey to the heat a couple of years in Muenster. We had decided to go out one more time for 10 more minutes so I didn't feel like carrying the camelback on that ride. Got lost out there for 3 hours and wrecked my brains out in 110 degree heat. Spent a night in the hospital with non-functioning kidneys. Fortunately they were able to recover. I felt pretty fortunate it wasn't any worse.
Texas heat can be brutal if you don't watch yourself. Probably a good reason they run Texas so early in the series year after year.

Wednesday update...

The forecast still looks on track. There were no major changes in last night computer weather models. Lows expected to be near 70 with highs near 90 and nice and humid.

Thursday Update...

No changes to the forecast necessary. Highs near 90 with lows near 70. It should be breezy with winds from 15-25 mph which should help out a bit with the heat.

Hopefully all the riders and teams take this shit seriously ( Hydration ). Should be hydrating themselves a good few days before the race. I'm sure they do know.......but sometimes racers have other things on their minds and just forget until like THAT morning! Damn Texas is a brutal round.

Here is to hoping all the guys get out of there in one piece!

Soooo sorry to ask to challenge the top riders. I guess being from a place where the hottest it gets is probably in the 80s (Pure uninformed guess) you cringe at the idea of 90-100 degree weather. My reasoning is that Freestone lacks the elevation changes that some tracks are known for, it lacks the sand that some places are known for, but it does have the Texas heat that IT is known for. I am only asking that the track keep with it's tradition. Would you say the same thing if Southwick decided to take away the sand because it develops deep sand holes that might cause a rider to jar their back and be in pain? NOOO!!! So why don't you STFU and let me keep with my opinion.
