In the "Chad Reed on the Chive" thread, Reded made a statement about wanting to stop and check on Chad if he were RV.

Just wondering, have any of you guys ( who actually race ) ever stopped mid - race to help / check on someone?

I did once. In a vet race a guy tripled past me ( I doubled ) and he wadded up HARD on the landing. I had had no place to go but right over him. Both tires took him square across the chest. I seriously thought he was in bad shape, so I stopped, laid my bike down and ran back to help him get off the track.

Didn't end up in last in that race ( surprisingly ) but didn't have a real good finish. But still, I couldn't leave a guy who was much older than me ( I knew him from other races ) laying on the track after nailing him with a 250F!

Ive had the same experience only 3 weeks ago, racing a local pony express and fell and cracked a couple of ribs but also dislocated my left knee so I wasnt going anywhere,This was the second lap of a 3hr race, Thankfully 5 guys who I either barely new or didnt know all stopped and helped me out, moved my bike and one even lent the first aid people his alpinestar back supprt to help my leg stay stable on the stretcher! He even found my number and rang to see how I was! Thats why motorcross riding/racing is the best sport in the world! Thanks to them guys!!!

I have slowed down many times to see if someone was okay, especially friends of mine. I would stop if it was necessary, but I never was put in the position.

I have however had someone stop for me. It was a practice day at a place called Switchback in PA. I was going down a 5th gear straightaway on my second lap of the day. I went outside to pass a slower rider and hit a gigantic square edged puddle in what I thought was a freshly disked straightaway. I don't remember the rest but I was unconscious with my head trapped underneath my bike and my exhaust pipe burning my arm and gas from the overflow burning my back. The guy I was passing wondered why I suddenly vanished, came back, and got the bike off of me which is about when I came to. He stayed with me until my friend came around and saw me. Then he was gone. I never got to thank him as I was rushed by my mom and friend to the hospital.

Here is the photo of my wrist about a week afterwards.

I have, a couple years ago a couple guys fell like dominoes in front of me on the start, and I got one of the guys stuck under my bike and drug him for a while and then spit him out of the back. At the time I also worked at the track, and wanted to make sure the dude was ok.

I stopped once. After crashing in the first turn mid lap I see yellow flags everywhere, the guy I went to the track with was taking a nap in the middle of the track after a small tabletop. There was nobody around yet (medics). He was out for around 6 minutes, very scary.

I stop all the time for downed riders. Last year, a guy I race all the time actually crashed in front of me, causing me to crash into him. The first thing I did was to check him, then I went to my bike.
I am never going to be a pro and I'm out to have fun, so making sure everyone is OK is part of the fun for me.

Never stopped, I could see stopping if you raced them long trail things though.... Whistling I only raced MX where there are plenty of others around to help.

I've stoped. I had a guy crash right in front of me in the first turn and had no where to go but over top of him. I helped him off the track where the paramedics took a look at him. I think in those cases we need to help each other out.

I've stopped plenty of times, but I'm not getting paid. Best one though was when I and the oldest son were having an epic battle on 74 CR125 Hondas several years back when I pressured him into falling. It was hilarious. I kept sticking a wheel in on him and yelling at him until he cross rutted a corner and tipped over. I slowed and waited for him to get up and catch back up when he attempted to take me out over a jump and went on to beat me. No respect.....

Ive collided with someone mid-air and ran to them to see if they were alright before going back to my bike, if that counts

About 12 or 13 years ago when I was a dumb teenager some guy crashed in front of me on a back section of the track where there were no flaggers or assistance nearby. He didn't spring up so I stopped to check on him, it was the first lap of a local C class race so who gives a shit, I had a horrible start and I wasn't in shape to catch the leaders anyways. A few years later I was the best man at his wedding and I'm sure he will be mine if I ever get married. We're best of friends and riding partners still today.

I've done it several times during HS. It is not a big deal since we don't race for money, and if I wanted a trophy I could just go buy one at the store. My kids wouldn't know any better once I brought it home :-)
Last time was for a young lady who was pinned under her bike and in the process of getting cooked by the exhaust.

Play riding or practicing I'll always stop. In a race, thankfully I've never seen an incident that required me to pull over and help mid-race. I've seen lots of guys go down, but never in a situation where I would have been any more help than what they already had.
