Convert your old YZ125 or YZ250 into a 2022 model - "Restyle Kit" cost, how-to video, & part numbers...

Edited Date/Time 9/21/2022 6:57am
Hey Guys,

Happy Friday.

This isn't a bike build exactly, but this section seemed like an appropriate place to share this info...(it will be a build soon, however!)

I recently converted my old 2003 steel framed YZ250 into what looks like a 2022 model using all the newest OEM body components. So I thought I'd share all my findings for others that wish to do the same.

It's very easy as some may have already guessed & there is really only one caveat for steel framed YZ owners. You have to remove a little material from the subframe for steelies. Video details where to remove a little aluminum.

What you'll need to convert your 02-21 YZ into a 2022 body equipped beauty:

Quick note...

-This is a list of OEM's you need that will pair with some of your existing YZ's fasteners.

Example: Your 2002-2021 rear fender uses two threaded inserts & bolts on the upper & inner fender-to-subframe mounting locations. One holds your silencer too, for reference.

However, on the 2022 model, the rear fender uses 4 of these fastener setups instead of 2. The rear number plates are now bolted to the rear fender below the mounts I previously spoke about above.

So if you're ordering based off of my list, be sure to add the two extra bolts & fasteners if you want to replace & not re-use your existing stuff.

Long story short- mind the quantities of things as you add them to your cart.

I tried to keep the mod as cost effective as possible & omitted "extras" if the old YZ already had them, since most bikes are not "full builds".

I also did not purchase the tuning fork logo/ sticker that goes onto the seat mounting access cap. (see in video)

Truthfully I have never ridden this bike. Has a lot of issues like weeping water pump seal, the slide was broken, etc!

I picked it up for an upcoming build / giveaway & wanted to do this mod for some good content along the way.

Back to your question though:

The bike may be able to intake more air with the new bodywork, as there is some open ducting from the new subframe design. You can sort of see the "vents" at the rear of the seat, where the rear # plates & fender meet. Right behind my last name on the decals.

A good lead might be to see if Yamaha themselves changed their stock jetting baseline from 2021 to 2022 on the YZ250. Not sure if the YZ125 jet sizes are relevant if they have changed, as there was some exhaust valve mods if I remember reading that correctly?

The intake boot is the same too. Parts fiche shows a different part number but when received, it's identical with a patching part number in the mold.

At any rate, you could always just re-jet, right? 💪 I'm sure it would be slight if even needed at all. Cool question.

Have a killer day, Joe!

Really appreciate the video and parts numbers. Actually went through and added them to my rocky mountain account already for future purchase.

Just adding to Charle' s thread, the update did not effect jetting for me. As he said, large air vents by seat Nd rear fender, i could not feel any difference while riding.

There it is, I’ve been waiting for someone to do a tread on updating older YZ’s to 22 livery. Charles and MX Revival is where it’s at. I bought a set of the R-Tech plastic for my KTM450 to make it red and I was impressed with the quality of that plastic kit and the fact it came with all the spacers, etc just like OEM. It took a bit of time to get it since it came all the way from Italy, but Charles kept me in the loop with tracking info and ETA.

Thanks Charles for taking the time to post all that info!

Thanks so much for sharing. Considering switching over my 18, primarily for a less cramped rider triangle, I’m only 5’ 10’, but feel really cramped compared to newer gen bikes I have.

For those that have made the switch did the update to newer design help that triangle and make the riding experience better, as in “100% totally worth it”?

My son is riding the bike, the seat and subframe put you highrer on the bike. Not a drastic change but does feel a bit bigger or taller for a better word.
First couple of rides he said it felt different. But heck changes to lever position makes the whole bike feel differnt to meSmile

Is the new subframe available? Motosport says unavailable and I contacted another place and they didn't know unless I ordered it.

What quantity of each part is required?  Kinda confused on your wording?

Secondly, can the original subframes 2004+ Aluminum ones be modified to fit the newer style or is it just too different and require a new one at $300+?

Anyone looked into making the 04+ subframe work ? Looks like the difference between the old style and the new style is ears for the seat bolts on the old one vs the new one not having them and the new one has what looks like a support bar which I have been told the 22+ seat dosent even make contact with it

The old subframes will not work, the way the seats, fenders etc.. fit is way different.

Simply use these part numbers as a guide or reference when browsing/ selecting from a parts microfiche. The illustrations (picture in the fiche) will have a layout, so you'll see what you do and don't need.

Great info Charles!

My question is , if I want to upgrade to the 22 shrouds on my 2014. Will I just need the fuel tank and seat?

Thank you 👍

Bike looks great Adam!

Steeper investment if you have a newer bike as I've seen some nice used 22's for around 5500. Better investment if you have a steel frame 125/250 like Charles' build. You can find those bike's much cheaper. I found a cherry 03 for 1500.
