turnip Added a reply to SMX in a dome
1/13/2025 9:31am No more Supercross in Mercedes Benz Dome - Atlanta. The HVAC maintenance following the dirt events were too much so they didn't renew the contract. This is from the person who headed up the Georgia World Congress Center that controls the dome among other properties. I was able to sit with him at a soccer match and ask him about...

turnip Added a reply to CRPS (chronic regional pain syndrome) and MX, anyone?
12/12/2022 7:40am When I read your title I was a bit curious what I was going to get reading the replies as it can be a bit varied asking for medical advice on a moto forum. From what I've read from your replies though, keep doing what you are doing. The medications you are on will help and the exposure therapy is...
turnip Added a reply to Severe Compression Fracture
9/27/2020 8:27am Hey fastpat, it's not normal for pain to increase suddenly like that, especially after having some improvement from what it seemed. In combination with the trouble sleeping, not eating, and nausea/vomiting, I'd encourage you to go and get checked on ASAP. If you have a fever, go sooner. If you've been taking meds like oxycodone, etc. you could also be...
turnip Added a reply to Compression fracture experiences
8/24/2020 7:43am Compression fractures usually heal quite well in most cases. Kyphoplasty has been around since the early 90's and was proposed to be the best way to fix this. The main research on kyphoplasty is in osteoporotic fractures and not as much as in traumatic compression fractures. Hate to hear that it took some time for you to get the right...
turnip Added a reply to L4 transverse process fracture recovery
8/4/2020 12:36pm I'd go by those directions. If it's still bothering you, just get another film of the area and follow up with the spine ortho. Again, the stats are in your favor - let it heal over the next few weeks and most likely nothing to worry about. No need to rush back just 2 weeks early. As a side note...
turnip Added a reply to L4 transverse process fracture recovery
8/4/2020 7:22am It's not uncommon for it to take 5-10 days for this to show up on x-ray, similar for hairline fracture in the ribs as well. When we have a small fracture, it takes a few days for the "damaged bone" to be cleaned out by the body - that's when a fracture is more easily visible on x-ray. If you...
turnip Added a reply to L4 transverse process fracture recovery
8/3/2020 2:14pm Luckily, this injury isn't too serious. The transverse processes in the lumbar spine are simply anchor points for muscles - specifically ones that rotate and laterally flex your spine. There is no neurological risk with a transverse process fracture. The Standard of care is usually xrays every 2-ish weeks to monitor healing. Healing usually takes place in 4-6 weeks from...

1/7/2020 12:10pm Funny thing is I don't think most practicing Medical Doctors really care what they are called. If I'm dying, seriously ill or injured, I'm not going to rely on a chiropractor, physical therapist, pharmacist, or professor. I'm going to rely on and entrust a board certified medical doctor. No one is going to yell for a Physical Therapist or Professor if someone has fallen unconscious in an airport ("Hey, someone get me an English Lit Professor, stat!!). They're going to yell for a "Doctor" and the doctor that comes running better sure as shit be a board certified medical doctor...

1/7/2020 11:46am I'll also include the other x-ray training comment here. We do have training in x-ray reading, BUT - they should be sent out to be overread by a radiologist. I'm not worried about them being better than me at THEIR job. X-rays should always be taken in the case of trauma and MRI in cases of neurologic issues. From there...
turnip Added a reply to Thoughts on Chiropractors?
1/7/2020 11:42am Hey man, I agree with the first half but the last half is outdated. Here is some research pointing to no link at all between the cervical artery dissection (CAD) and manipulation of the neck. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07853890.2019.1590627?fbcl… Now, this is where research is tricky. I have an article that says there is NO risk. However, I know people who this has...
turnip Added a reply to Thoughts on Chiropractors?
1/7/2020 11:29am So any and every chiro or PT had better recommend some type of good movement and exercise. Also, this book is a great example of some good low-level movement that is a great way to get moving after an injury or while going through some chronic pain. I know Chad Reed has seen Dr. Goodman before.

1/7/2020 11:27am This will cover a few. We're trying to get away from the whole "alignment" thing. It was a bad way to describe something we thought we understood better. The easiest explanation right now is to think of a lack of movement (fixation) in the joint. We don't really know why this happens but we do know it CAN, but doesn't...

1/7/2020 11:21am I get why MDs are testy about this. Fact is doctor is simply an educational status that is not limited the medical profession. PhD is a prime example - it's just an amount of work done in a subject. Plenty of professors in academia go by "Dr" because they've earned it. Physical Therapists now have a Doctorate degree too -...

1/7/2020 11:18am Don't go to this guy. He bastardized a technique for scoliosis. There is benefit in some light traction but this is like pinning the throttle leading up to single into a corner - don't do it.

1/7/2020 11:16am Let's have some fun with this. I'm doing some online CE today so I'll answer these to the best of my ability and I'll try to link some research along the way too. Here's some background: Entering my 7th year of practice, certified in Active Release Technique (soft tissue work), use McKenzie Technique for spine-related disorders (a lot of PTs...

turnip Added a reply to Atlanta SX questions
2/18/2015 12:36pm I've been to a few of the Supercross races there and tried a few different options. By far the best/easiest is just staying at the Omni/CNN center and parking there. It is expensive though. I've stayed at hotels further away and just walked back a few times and this is fine. I've taken a cab too when it was cold...
