But not in Casey, Illinois! Round 2 of the Fly Racing Showdown series is taking place here at Lincoln Trail tomorrow morning. As of 6pm tonight, there were already more than 1,000 entries for the race tomorrow. As a matter of fact, they have so many riders, they warned us that to expect the racing to continue into Monday to accommodate everyone and avoid cutting laps. Time to get to bed...

Responses aren't US only, so Tortelli is out because of his world title (agree on his speed). Didn't see Yogi, who I would slot in front of Canard probably and certainly Alessi. Bradshaw, Windham, Lusk are all solid picks. Pastrana I think was faster than RC and Stew, but you cannot separate how fleeting his racing career was by choice. From another era, Marty Tripes is another crazy talent, untouchable some days, but erratic. Jim Pomeroy and Ake Jonsson is another who missed out if we're going back as far as Sylvain Geboers.

Dude was in shape too. Back in the day when men were men, it was standard motocross with 40 plus 2... and they were brutal 😁. When I raced the 500 nationals the 1st time I was in OK shape but after seeing marty and Hannah dice It out, full bore wfo.. I knew I was in trouble and could never last the whole race like they did. Afuckingmazing...

TeeJay54 Added a reply to 1979 RM250N gearing

One of the best bikes ever! Got one as soon as they came out, was riding a '78 RM250C2 before that. The motor was awesome with a really brosd powerband. Stock gearing worked best on most tracks, but I'd run a couple teeth smaller on the rear sprocket on fast tracks with longer straights. The motor pulled the higher gearing...

I remember all of these photos, every one I worshiped him and his style that much I wanted to be him that much It tried to emulate him that much I'm now sorry I didn't tell him when I had the chance. I've never been a "fan boy" or anything like that. I should've, gently, quietly, said "thank you" I'll remember that going forward.

I was there that day - we were all stunned that anyone could beat Marty - we thought he was unbeatable. He was a class act all the way tho.

Goddamn fuggin shame, look up the definition of a Legend. No doubt in my mind that an image of Marty Smith pops up at the top of the list. Hang in there family and friends of these two great people. I remember keeping these legends apart at a moto party a few years back.

I can only add to the praise that's already been said. He was my American hero. I can fondly say I got to hang with him in 1976 at Rio Bravo. I have no idea why he gave me the time of day but he let me tag along all day/evening on Saturday before the race on Sunday. He was just so cool, confident and in control. I was a stud by proxy as we walked from van to van, room to room...he threw out friendly jabs, "What happened to your face...did ya catch it in a door or get...

TeeJay54 Added a reply to 89' Golden State Nats - SANDHILL RANCH

Just came upon this thread. Since Sandhill was my "home track", it's nice to hear a SoCal guy recognize what a great place it was. I grew up about a half hour away from there and raced there many times from '75 through '81. One memory to share... I think it was around '78, and Dick Man shows up in...

OK everyone, thanks to COVID19, I finally ran out of excuses, quit procrastinating and digitized some old video footage. This is Sandhill Ranch in Brentwood California in all of its 1989 Golden State Narional motocross glory. I must add a disclaimer though: I was just a prepubescent kid in 1989 and I was terrible with a camera. So the footage....admittedly...sucks. But if you are patient, you'll spot some national stars like Ward and Antunez, as well as some local stars like Chris Neal. Maybe others too! Also, I'm Polish so when my dad and I are talking in the background...

64....too young to go. But....if you gotta go....it's good to punch your ticket doing something you loved....not rotting on a couch or in a hospital somewhere. Living life... In some ways, it's good they went together. Tragic for the family though Sad RIP Marty. Thanks for the memories.

1976 Hangtown at Plymouth….First National of the year and Marty Smith had the #1 plate. His bike broke and he pushed it back to the pits. Didn't throw it down, didn't wait on his mechanic, just pushed his bike back through the crowd. The fans loved it, I loved it. A real motocrosser in my book.
