When I one time purchased a vehicle "out of state" I had to show proof of residency in my state. The dealer charged no tax, and the state tax from my state was added when I registered the vehicle. But it was a new vehicle. TM

In Minnesota you pay the tax once the auto is registered in Minnesota, if you sell it out of state the new owner does the registration once they arrive in their state.

You do not pay sales tax in the state you purchase--- you pay your home state sales tax when you go to the DMV to register your vehicle. The selling dealer will issue you a "temp transit " tag (usually good for 60 days) to get you home, we charge around $125 for that, but no tax. There ARE exceptions to that rule however--- there are some states that have an agreement that they can collect each others sales taxes and then forward the amount to the appropriate DMV-- In Pa we have such an agreement with only a couple...

Friend bought a 17 2500 HD a year or two ago from Wisconsin, and was ultimately registering in NY because thats where he lived. He paid the full tax bill in NY when registering it at DMV (they issued temp plates). Same way you're describing. Another friend recently purchased a car from a dealer out of state , and the state charged him the local state sales tax (less than NY's lovely 8%), and then he only pays the difference at the DMV. Weather that dealer issues a check to NYS on his behalf for the tax he paid there...

The recent DV episode is the only one I watched in it's entirety as of late. DV is gold and pulls no punches...even with his vaunted host. Honestly, there is only so much Matthes I can take. I don't hate the guy, but he kinda grates on me. I do prefer his REALLY old interviews when it was just him. When I listen now, it's just segments with certain guests. I tire of all the other schmuckery. Also, I FF thru the commercial/product endorsements. I have very little tolerance for corporate shilling. I get it....they pay for keeping content on...

Been a long time listener too. The bias and acted stubbornness was entertaining. I thought DV's constant interruptions during sponsors time was annoying...but then it hit me. Holly molly, A lot of gargling sponsors names and products.. I've slowly been accustomed to these regurgitations for years now. Ask yourself, can Matthes truly explain what a GP vertex piston is? Am sure he cashes their checks tho. And that damn neck brace/ airline commercial over and over.. Yet never seen him use one. So sorry, making grown up, informed decisions here.
