Imagine if the 2011 AMA Monster Energy Supercross Series had a NASCAR-like format. Not completely the same, but based off it. 5 points for Pole (or Quick Time), 5 points for the holeshot, and 10 points for each lap led. What would the points look like?

1. James Stewart - 1,024 points (72 laps led, 5 Holeshots, 8 Poles)
2. Ryan Villopoto - 930 points (67 laps led, 1 Pole)
3. Trey Canard - 774 points (53 laps led, 1 Pole)
4. Chad Reed - 589 points (33 laps led, 2 Holeshots)
5. Ryan Dungey - 468 points (21 laps led, 2 Poles)

What do you think about the points system if it were like that? Discuss it, Vital.

maybe but definitely add finishes in there too and more points than anything else.

I added those points to the original points. I didn't do anything extra for wins.

The whole idea with points per lap would make racing more fast pace IMO, rider #2 wouldn't follow rider #1 until lap 18 to make the pass. They'd all want the lead ASAP. and as long as possible.

I like the idea... maybe get 1 point for holeshot and 1 point for winning the heat.

That way, the main event winner comes out with the most points for the night no matter what. Minimum of 25 points for winner, maximum points of 24 points for 2nd place.

I thought the reason for having 1 main event and not 2 moto's in supercross was so that everyone could understand who won at the end of the show.

If the audience can't figure out 2 moto scores, they would struggle with bonus points.

Fans didn't understand in NASCAR how races throughout the entire season tallied up into a overall winner, that's why they changed it into the new "chase" format.

PS: I don't want them to change the format in SX, I was just curious of how the points would look.

I like the most laps led bonus point or something, that way it gives a nod to the person who was riding up front the most whether they won or not, they still get a bonus for leading the race the most

So in a sense, the best rider won't win?

I think you need to do some research on the NASCAR points system.

Your system isn't based on theirs.

1 for pole
1 for leading a lap
1 for leading most laps
43 to win (20 in SX)
1 for 43rd (20th in SX)

Redo your calculations using that. Smile

Way too many points for leading laps, the win becomes irrelevant - looks a like a system that rewards pure speed over winning.

Would be exciting for about 3 rounds until everyone crashed their brains out trying to lead laps or get holeshots or "win" qualifying.

Then the points would not accurately reflect on the better rider. It's not about laps led, it's about who crosses the finish line first. JS7 is the practice king, not a champion.

Exactly, he hasn't won any championships. The dude sucks.

I think a point for a heat win would be good. But the whole holeshot thing is just a gimmick anyway.

It's interesting but in motocross the winner is the first rider to cross the finish line.

I like the point for the holeshot and heat win. I've never really understood nascar's points system, but I've never really tried to figure it out either.

So then how does a 2-2, beat a 1-4 for an overall?

I have always wondered if they gave points 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2 for heat wins, 3-2 for LCQ and then the regular points for the mains. Maybe a little more incentive/reward, other than gate choice, for the preliminaries.

Good point simx. I guess my comment only applies to individual motos or supercross mains.

nascar is for hillbillies, moto is for real men with brains. If you have to dumb it all down so a guy can go wfo and crash n burn and still lead a series then you can fuckoff.

SX should go to the MXGP points system they had in the 90s. 20 pts for 1st, 17 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, down to 1 point for 15th. No points for 16th to 20th.

Yeah, 16-20th can be DNF spots often.

You used to only score points if you made the top 10. Considering these days they can hardly fill a 20 gate grid I reckon top 10 points is generous.

not the same for dirt biking. dirt bike races are not prone to drafting other bikes to conserve fuel or slingshot to the front .the front cars use more energy on equipment compared to the ones holding back.

you want to make it more interesting?

5 extra points for round 1 for the winner as well as the finale race!

this way , the riders at rd. 1 that do not want to push it too hard being early in season will have a reason to.

as well as the finale.rider that is leading the series by vegas but cannot risk playing it safe!

Put up a tent and call it a circus while yer at it. K.I.S.S. Keep it Simple Stupid.
The way it is now, if you are the fastest guy you get an advantage by having the first gate pick for your heat, then if you are the fastest guy you get the advantage again for the main.
Run that point system for the years when MC and RC were winning and the series would have been over in round 9.. maybe 10. Very exciting.
