I dont think he wass "lucky" I think he just advanced everything so much no one could keep up. Same as bubba in the 125s. The guy figured out how to jump lower and smoother than anyone else, which resulted in him being much faster than everyone else. The rest of the field was playing catch up, not because they were bad, but because he was so good.

As much as I enjoyed watching MC race. He was so good that he made a couple years kinda boring.

The only time he got lucky was maybe after the races.

For the record, if MC hadn't gotten a flat in Minneapolis in '97, (or friggin' Lamson at round one) it would've been 8 sx titles, and had he not broken his wrist in '98, he probably would've won the outdoors...but that's a whole other 'what if' argument. That's why the numbers MATTER: 72 will stand for 20 years at least.

Well lets hear from MC himself, back in 06 when he made his comeback he clearly stated that he was faster than before he "retired". How many races did he win? Zero. But he still is the "King" based on his championships.

Emig: I would agree. Emig was one of the best.
RC: He beat RC one season while RC was crashing his brains out.
Lusk: I like Erza but he couldn't win when MC was gone.
LaRocco: Hard nose, hard working guy that wasn't the smoothest SX guy.
Stanton: Put him up there with the question mark with Bradshaw.
Huffman: Good solid rider, but not at the same level at someone like MC.
Lamson: Fantastic 125 pilot, but didn't set the woods on fire in the 250s.
Windham: Raced a few years with MC as a rookie.
MC beat RC in two seasons, 99 and 2000

Thats not really fair to jeremy. He was 29 when RC finally beat him, and at that point RC was willing to jump, or do anything to win.

Few years as a rookie ?

Anyway, Windham, Lusk and LaRocco were riders common to when MC was winning and when RC started winning. I'm trying to think of other guys who would have been considered better than them when RC started his string in SX. Until James came into the picture I'd say it was similar competition to when MC was winning.

MC was the best, but he was also the smartest.. the other riders in that time were good but more on the edge and a lot of them partied too.. Dungey, Canard, RV, Reed, RC, Bubba... are a lot more serious week in week out, but if MC was racing supercross now I think he would be hard to beat still. It would take an RC performance of 2001 to beat him.

If you want to teach a guy how to ride supercross.. show him a tape of McGrath he is the greatest supercross rider of all time and technically perfect.

Reed, Stewart and RC are not far behind and speedwise are right there.. Reed is the closest new fans will get to seeing Jeremy race imo.

All I know is that James ain't going to get 73 SX wins. MC's record is as safe as Ted William's batting avg is as far as I'm concerned. Sleep well MC-you will probably die before that record gets broken.

Here's a good way to look at it.

MC was a Supercross specialist. He raced 10 full Sx seasons (250 class). I think back then, they were 16 race seasons. 160 races, he won 72 races. That's a winning percentage of 45%.

RC was a Motocross specialist. He raced 10 full Mx seasons (125/250/450). 12 races a season (other than 2003, 11 races). That's 119 races, and he won 102. That's a winning percentage of 85.7%.

Ricky won waaaaaaaay more in his speciality.

Then if you look at racing and winning in the other aspect:

MC won 17 races out of his comfort zone.

RC won 48 races out of his comfort zone.

How do people still think MC is the GOAT? I don't get it. The numbers don't lie. And Ricky did it with stiffer competition.

People of the 90's, it's okay to admit that MC wasn't the greatest.
Boy, doesn't everyone hate it when people bring actual facts to an argument?
I agree, RC = GOAT!

The resaon MC's competition of the day sometimes is percieved as weak, is that Jeremy was truly that good. He made all others seem mediocre. Another stat people overlook is that Jeremy never missed a SX season or a race in his career. His ability to race that long at that speed and never miss a race due to injury is incredible.

MC will always be the King of SX, even if his records are beaten.

MC was the King of SX but as far as the great outdoors he was lucky to get one championship in the 250 class in 1995. 7 SX championships and only 1 outdoor championship tells me he didn't much like riding the real MotoCross series...
Same deal for Emig and SX. He lucked into his SX championship when MC was slow going on that Suzuki, and then cut his heal. But both of them were ahead of the rest of the field.
That said, MC made a huge contribution to SX. He brought BMX techniques into it: Stay low on the jumps, conserve momentum...Check out older races before him. It is almost painful to watch compared to the flowing style you see today.

MC Lucky??? WTF???

MC beat everyone with ease on pure talent alone! It took The GOAT to go into a boot camp style training regiment so that he could run fast laps the entire race just to beat him.

MC is the King of SX and I dont see anyone taking that away from him. At least in my lifetime.

Actually when MC came back he could not beat RC,JS or CR for that matter. But you are right he will be the King for a LONG time. The ability to put it together for that long is just as or more commendable as out right speed.

I have said it before, and I will say it again.

I honestly think that in 93, MC did get lucky but in a different way than alot think.

In 1993, MC was destined to be a factor, not the next champion. Bradshaw, Bayle, Stanton, Larocco, MXKeid, Cooper, Ward.... I could keep going... he was going to be up with those guys. Then, something happened, and imo, it is what sparked earlier, the domination we saw for almost a decade. imo he would have still dominated, just this accelerated it.

1993 hits. First race, everyone is buzzing about another Stanton/Bayle/Bradshaw war. That was the story. At no time was MC mentioned other than an up and coming rookie that could possibly be a factor. What happened? First 3 or 4 races, MC was up front, but not winning. Bayle was over it, he had road racing on his mind and was phoning it in. Stanton had went vegitarian and was not fit at all plus SX wasnt exactly his forte in terms of smooth. Bradshaw was literally in a very bad place mentally, almost to the point of suicidal.

MC was following Stanton, and in MC's own words, during the race he asked himself this question... "why am I following this guy?" He dives inside, nails a triple, passes Stanton. Then goes on to win that race, and the rest that season.

How is that lucky? Had he moved up in 92, when all 3 of them were at their peak, you would not have seen an MC domination that quickly. Would he have eventually gotten there, imo, yes. But catching things like that in 93 gave him a huge boost in confidence, as in confidence on steriods vs building it gradually. He caught the field when they were at their softest, got a much larger confidence boost faster, and imo it led to what we saw in the years that followed.

I think RC is the GOAT overall and certainly in MX...I think MC is the best SX racer/champion ever. All just my own opinion.

But, someone said that MC didn't beat anybody...yet, up until Reed showed up in doors the field was the same as when MC was racing and winning. Then there's outdoors. Tortelli, KW and Ferry were RC's main competition until James showed up.

I personally was always an Emig fan. MC won alot of races. I just don't think he had any real competition when he won. Does anyone else feel that the talent level was low at that point? If Ricky would have came sooner he would of stopped him a couple titles early. Obviously if my aunt had a #^{£ she would be uncle.

I didn't like the comments MC made about Pourcel and Reed. I personally think Reed is just as good if not better than MC. Reed has always had stacked competition and rose to the occasion. When it comes to pourcel I think he is more talented as well.. I'm going to get some $#^+ for this. Reed the best rider-owner ever?
If anyone can have an opinion on a rider it's MC, just like RC & Emig have their opinions on the racers during their TV broadcasts, because they've been there and they are champions. MC was not lucky, MC busted his ass, he got a trainer, worked out, then kicked ass. Yeah the rest of the field settled for 2nd, because they were not passing MC. MX is a lot of mental, he had that down pat, not one of those guys thought they could beat him and they didn't, one guy did, years later DV, and he did.

MC raced out doors, he did good, he wasn't stellar like in SX, but really? Now he's inadequate in your eyes? Well I won't lose sleep over it and neither will MC, not the 10's of thousands of fans he has. There are only a handful of guys who can be put on a pedestal and MC is one of them, he is the King bar none.

MC had competition like the others did, he was just that much better, take away the factor (MC) and there were the rest of the field. I dislike your "if's", there are always riders coming down the pipeline. RC was next in line, I mean really Jeremy has 8 years on him, in MX years that's like 100. This is an opinion board yes, what you say is your opinion, but lay off the crack pipe dude and show some fucking respect to MC, so in stating the obvious, my opinion is you're a total tool.

Dumb question. Easy answer. No

Have you ever considered that guys like Reed and Stewart are as good as they are BECAUSE of MC? He basically created the template for winning modern SX. Staying lower over jumps, showmanship, charisma, etc were all things that he did better than anyone else and brought the sport to the mainstream audience.

MC beat everyone due to an incredible talent.
He also met up with his competition at Lake Havasu, getting drunk etc. We all know his fiercest rival was caught with a weed bong.
RC still won when mx became somewhat professional. When the money, training and the sport i general grew to new levels.

I think of myself as a MC era fan, but to me no one is CLOSE to RC. He is the one and only GOAT. MC is the King of sx from the party era. Where hair color, earrings, nipple rings, and herpes gave you status

Like MBBagers said above, MC was 8 years in the game. His last and 72nd win (geeez!) was against a kid that started beating him and trained like a Navy Seal to do so. In fact, that is still Ricky's best SX season ever of his career. 13 straight wins of his 14 wins that season. Who won the other 2 races? Hmmmmm, I think it was MC Smile

Carmichael, Emig, Lusk, Huffman, Stanton, Windham, LaRocco, Vuillemin, Hughes (Ryno), Button, Henry, Albertyn, Ferry, Tortelli, Pichon, Ward, Dowd.

Now to say he got lucky with the guys above is just silly, some of those guys above at their best were bloody fast and hard to beat. MC was just better and smarter in most races then those guys to win so many races and championships.
