Ralph Sheheen

This is not a bash Ralph thread it is a challenge to everyone who complains about the announcing.......
What you need is a tape recorder or video recorder of some kind and as you watch the race record yourself calling the action as you watch it. Now comes the good part.........when it is over watch or listen to to the race that you just called and I bet you will see that these guys do a pretty darn good job and it is not as easy as you think.
If you really have guts then post it here on Vital.Blush

Good idea, not sayin I'm ready to step up but I'd rather listen to Ricky and Emig for two hours.

I'm a Shasheen hater, but im not saying I can personally do better than him...but what i would like to see is someone who can do a better job, and is less biased. I'm not a professional commentator, but I bet there is someone out there who could do a lot better job than Ralph The Mouth.

Do it for the first three laps of the main event. Post it up by Wednesday.

I'll figure out a prize for the best one.

I love these kinds of threads... Just because the general public can't do a better than him at HIS profession, doesn't mean he is doing a good job.

I personally don't mind the guy but these types of comparisons are just ridiculous.

I think the point is that no-one gets a job as TV sports commentator or talkshow host unless they are a completely nauseating gobhead. It's not the mistakes which annoy people; it's the character, or rather lack of it ! Just look at Hollywood "stars" when they don't have a script and a director to tell em how to present it. "Personality" is not the word which comes to mind.

i guarantee i could do a better job.

i for one, wouldnt have given out the "brett michaels ride hard blow hard" award to every rider on the grid by now.

seriously, i sit around with a couple pro's and watch the races probably three to four times in a row every week.

the first time as fans. the second time i listen as my buddies evaluate styles and mistakes. and the third time to give analysis.

if our conversations were recorded it'd be worlds more entertaining than dumbass ralph. ralph is neither a polished professional nor entertaining. just a stone cold dork in most opinions.

I'd try and record our stuff but i think we'd have a hard time not making a mockery of it if we knew things were being recorded. it'd end up just being a clown-fest on ralph, rc, and jeff and that isnt exactly the pont of gibby's contest.

that said, we love what emig brings to the table. even if his "keys to the race" often list rediculous statements such as "win the race" or "be the fastest guy" or "dont crash". emig is funny, his stupidity is one of his endearing qualities.

RC is his perfect sidekick. RC is more disciplined and logical. but knows how to walk the line with jeff and his ecentric schtick.

but all in all, you know what we all wish would happen.......BRING BACK ART, BAILY, COOMBS, AND LEEAN F'N TWEEDEN!!!

when you have to be running your mouth for hours on end, it's hard to make every thought or comment make sense to everyone. especially when you dont have experience on your side like emig and company.

Personally, I can barely even hear the commentary each week to pass judgement. But I've always thought that Ralph is really good at what he does.

I have to agree that I don't think he's that great and doesn't seem like a moto guy at all, but I don't really want to see him lose his job. At least get the names right. It's not that hard.

I think Sheheen is a tool in general, but I don't think he does a terrible job. The best announcer was Bailey, but others liked Art Eckman as well and I thought he was a bigger tool than Sheheen. I did like him though, as he had an infectious toolism about him but I didn't think he was a great announcer from an MX standpoint. ...."and bar-to-bar we go!"

Bailey was hands down the best though, and plenty of people didn't like him either. Go figure.

You ever seen their timing feed when it shows them in the booth? It's such a nice program compared to what we get online.

Eckman's voice was one-in-a-million at least. Kind of like Gary Burbank...very full and resonant.

Ralph is ok.

I would like it if the announcing was turned DOWN a notch and the sound of moto was turned UP a notch.
sometimes they just talk too much.

The races are what 11 and 17 minutes long? Hard to glamorize the action any more than what is playing out on the screen. Ralph & Emig do fine considering the filming they have to work with. They have to match what is being filmed regardless of what is important for the fans. Blame the camera guys not the announcers.

Ralph and Jeff do an excellent job. They let me up in the booth with my son and they let us listen in. I was so impressed with the job they did. It was crazy difficult just to listen to all the people in your ear and then watch the race and then watch the monitors. You also have to realize they are announcing to the casual fan and not the super fans on this site. Bottom line is they are great and we are lucky to have them.

X2......exactly. I'd love to sit in with you guys....entertaining. Tongue

Ralph-malph is good at what they hired him to do...which is constant chatterboxing to hype the show. Jeff is his "former SX champion" sidekick to bring in some "rider perspective" on his nonstop points he makes to the public at large that happen to be viewing the telecast. I too, shake my head back and forth(snicker)when I see Jeffs "keys to the race" thing. I'm like, "uhh yeah" "pretty basic there Jeff"...Laughing

I like Jeff and spoke with him at Washougal about his job calling the races. He assured me it's not as easy as people think(which I knew of course)...he was genuinely appreciative when I told him I thought he was doing a good job. All one needs to do to see how far Emig has come, is listen to RC interject some comments. Ricky, the legend he is...is nowhere near the announcer Jeff is. It takes time, and Emig has gotten pretty good IMO. Ralph does what Ralph was hired to do.........non-stop chatter to the lay-person viewing.

Ralph and Jeff are cool people and all but not great announcers.

God tier announcers?
ART ECKMAN AND DAVID BAILEY.

Also, OP is irrelevant. We don't get paid to call races. If you're getting a paycheck to do that, you should be better than those two are.

MXers are the biggest bunch of defeatists. "Be thankful you have something!", etc. I say, to hell with that! We should have great announcers, like Spanish MotoGP broadcasters!

AWESOME POST!

Seriously, I would LOVE to hear somebody's personal coverage of the race.

These guys are on the air for 60-minutes, sometimes 120-minutes straight, so for some to only complain about a few sentences here and there is quite remarkable.

I was thinking the same thing.

Besides, challenging laymen to beat a paid pro is not fair. I am not saying I am better than him, but I think there are pros out there that are, and they could do (and have done in the past IMO) a better job. He's average at the very best, especially when you compare his performance to what we get from the pro announcers in other sports. He might be getting better over the years, but still comes across and not very polished and professional, or even really knowledgeable about the sport.

P.S. I like your avatar...nice Versys!
