I just read the MXA article about Mike Goodwin's time in prison at the link below. Back in the 1980's, I had the "honor" of spending 72 hours with Goodwin at an "Expert/Pro" mx school. (I worked there, wasn't a rider... believe me).

I didn't know Goodwin before I picked him up at the airport, but I knew a great deal about him three days later. This is one of the most manipulative, conniving guys I've ever met. We shared a two room living area during that time along with Marty Tripes, and as a twenty three year old kid it was quite an eye opener.

As a side note, I rented my new CR250 to Tripes for the school. He returned it so thrashed that I pretty much had to replace everything on the damn thing, lol!

I thought you might like the story. I found it quite interesting:

So, do you think he's innocent? I guess they pretty much closed the case after they convicted Goodwin? Sad situation.

Your avatar photo shows way too much air for a bike with that suspension capability!

Do I think he was capable of arranging it? Yes. Do I think he actually did? I'm not convinced one way or another.

So Goodwin was a rock and roll promoter. That says a lot. That's one of the shadiest lines of work you can be in, at the high levels, where it's all about $$$$. I think things were run pretty fast and loose in the 70s in that business. He just carried that mentality over to Supercross.

I don't know one way or another if Mike had Mickey killed or not, but my pops knew them both very well from his time Managing Indian Dunes. Both Mickey and Mike put on races at the park, and my pops shared many a beer with the both of them. I was way too young when this all went down to have any kind of opinion either way about Mike, but from the conversations I had with my dad, and from what I know about the case it seems like they had a good case.

Just finished the story. Very well done Tom, and thank you very much for sharing.

I did some show promoting myself years ago, it's a "cash in a brown paper bag"-type of business. I wonder if Goodwin's way of business clashed so much w/Mickey Thompson's (presumably) more traditional style and that is what caused the animosity between them?

I think sometimes prosecutors and investigators proceed a little too early just because they have a real good suspect or motive. Just sayin...

A few surprising details in this story, not the least of which is that Supercross is the second largest motorsport in America. SX is bigger than NHRA drags, IndyCar?

I can't help but notice another similarity-- how the promoter takes all the money and the "stars of the show" often get screwed. This is true in entertainment and racing.

The MXA story was an interesting topic, but there was hardly any dialogue posted between Tom White and Mike Goodwin. It was more of a story on the prison facility.

I'm the same way Mark and from the little information the public has been given I just do not see how he could have been convicted.

I had the pleasure of knowing all the parties and as much of a dick as I thought Goodwin was, and I told him that to his face, I don't think he did it. Mickey was a great guy to have beers with or go on vacation with, but business he could be ruthless. He had business dealings of all sorts, it could have been anyone of those business dealings that felt they got jilted. Goodwin could be a scumbag, but I think he is too weak to pull off that murder. Just my thoughts.

that was the main thought i had after reading the article as well, more specifically the picture of Hannah standing next to Mike who was sitting in his car.

How cool is it that they feel good about it because 1% of the riders do really good off the factories and sponsors ?

Crazy! Never knew SX was that big (or as big as it is lol), I would have bet against that stat any day.

Having served as both a DA and a Judge (both trial-level and appellate-level), I would not disagree with you. And, you can add law enforcement to the list, as well. I would caution and point out, however, that the percentage is very, very small.

And let's don't forget the defense bar. I still remember signing a search warrant for a defense attorney's office after he was seen digging up some cash his client had buried....the DEA had it on video, which was hillarious to watch in my chambers. The guy had his tie thrown over his shoulder digging his ass off to 'recover' his fee!

And, then there was the elected DA who was shuttling female inmates to his office for some 'carpet action.' He isn't a DA any longer. That case had the potential to expose MANY others in the system, but he took the bullet.

Don't get me started....I could kill your faith in the system quickly.
