Being THE guy on a team

I get it, but when I look at Hunter’s progression there is no way he is on this alien level without Jett as a riding partner. At a time when it feels like the field vs the Lawrence’s, is it time to give up that “only I’m the guy on this team” mentality.

I’m thinking about chase right now and how we’re saying he has no place. Roczen, Webb, and Deegan wouldn’t want him because they want to be THE guy on the team. Hunter went from a solid rider with no chance of being Jett level, to literally beating Jett. IMO this comes down to him actually having a daily riding partner that is on that level.

I truly believe we would see a giant improvement in any of those 3 if they had chase on their team. What do they really have to lose? They all already are getting completely smoked by the Lawrence’s (sure they may win here and there, but overall championship talk).

I think of Deegan interviews when he came in so cocky and then after racing a few motos with the boys he talks about their intensity for the entire moto. He’s never ridden with that before, but Hunter and Jett ride with that everyday. They know what level the competition is at. None of the others truly do until season starts.

Maybe I’m just ranting, but what you guys think? I see Chase as a huge asset for a team right now vs a liability.

He’s a guy you hire and go “that guy could potentially go rogue on us” and simply accept that as a risk lol

Without Jett, Hunter is still a top guy, just not a dominant guy. Hunter was plenty fast when he was in Europe and when he came here.
Riders don’t need a guy pushing them all week to get faster, guys can either go fast or they can’t, it’s really that simple.  JT$ chased Chad and Ferry around for years, was barely a top 10 guy. RC raced the stopwatch and dominated everyone. Eli in the era of facilities never had a 450 partner to chase and did fairly well.

I'd bet that even though JT$ may not have caught Reed or Ferry at the test track; it made JT$ a better rider overall...I could be wrong though.

"Yeah, well hopefully, today will be a good day of risk! lol!"

I hope Chase stays at Kawi and delivers a fantastic season of SX/MX and the extra 3 races at the end for himself and everyone else.

It’s not “that simple.” When you show up at the test track every week basically riding alone because everybody else isn’t even close to your level, you begin to think you’re the man. Do people still get fast like this, sure. Also one example of a guy that wasn’t the best doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

When you’re riding with someone as good or faster than you, you quickly change your tune. Look how Deegan has taken getting beat, it’s eating him up. Imagine if he had that all offseason. He very obviously thought he was coming into the season ready because he had no one really to gauge off of that’s on that level.  Now imagine if he had sexton. Sexton is on that level. They both wouldn’t want to be second fastest during the week, that’s motivation.

Ps, don’t freak out because I used Deegan as an example. Insert whatever name to just take the context.

I think Deegan was about as ready for MX as he was going to be.  The rest was just getting out there, leaving speculation behind and actually doing it.  He did an admirable job I think.

Now we'll see if he can turn the corner and be a mainstay higher up on the podium.  He'll have more elite riders to deal with, but he's one of the elites himself.  Not a fan, but I like to watch him ride.

I think RC and Eli are a rare breed..

You can see how this works quite obviously in racing, how often do you see all the Star guys or all the PC guys around each other in races, they all learn similar things and ride the pace.

McGrath, Hannah, Decoster, Barnett, RC, Stewart and many others all practiced alone. If you practice alone, you never know how fast is fast enough, you keep pushing. Malcolm and AP have even stated when you practice in a group you can think you are fast enough if you are the fastest in the group, even if you are not as fast as the rest of the competition. The Lawrence family is a truly unique situation.

The advantage the Lawrences have isn’t that there’s two of them, it’s that they are brothers AND they’ve been brought up with a strong sense of family.  Each is as heavily invested in the other's success as their own.

No individual riders are going to share with and support another elite rider on a team the way the brothers do.  It just can’t be replicated by throwing two guys together.

You'd never see Hunter pull a 38on2 to his brother or Jett to Hunter. Race each other hard and clean, each will. Neither will punt the other so knowing that, they push each other vs slowing each other.

Jeff Stanton was never considered The Man on Team Honda but his team-mate RJ was. They trained together everyday and raced together and Stanton slept in a dog-house when he lost to RJ, till he didn't..... training with RJ everyday definitely made Jeff faster...

But even that's not the same as with the Law brothers, they can even switch bikes and speed up the testing phase.

Like you pointed out, the majority of the truly greats, train alone. I remember when Kent Howerton signed with Kawasaki, he called Jeff Ward and invited him to come train with him at his ranch, Jeff declined. He said if I went and trained with him, I would only learn to go his speed.
Like I said, you either have the ability to go fast and win, or you don’t, doesn’t matter who you ride with.

They trained together for 3 months and then RJ got hurt. The biggest help to Stanton was a factory Honda, and RJs injury. Stanton was good before he met RJ.
