I don’t read the topics consistently enough to get fired up about it. I have my opinions which I think are correct obviously but I’m sane enough to realize others also think they’re right. Re: 4-wheeling in Colorado, especially the San Juans (Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride area).
I've ridden every pass in the San Juans, all are relatively easy except for Black Bear and Poughkeepsie Gulch.
Poughkeepsie is by far the most difficult, especially going UP. Miles of brutal rock garden at a 30-40 degree angle.
Black Bear isn't really difficult, up to the pass from highway 550 it's doable by anything short of a Porsche or Lambo..... but the descent into Telluride is life-threatening, and that's no shit. Most people do it just fine, but if something goes wrong in a 4x4 vehicle it can and will kill you. GREAT ride on a bike, it's one-way from the summit down into Telluride. Masochists take ADV bikes down it, but that's just for cock-measuring purposes. It's supposed to be FUN 🤣
All the passes in the area are doable in a stock 4x4, you won't a need rock crawler except for the "extrene" trails. You best be a fairly expert driver for Black Bear and Poughkeepsie though. And don't take a FORD Explosion or Cadillac Escalade on anything with switchbacks 🤣
The entire area is stunningly beautiful, towns are close enough to remove fuel or food worries. It's not isolated wilderness anymore, sadly.
Forget the online apps and websites, the best and most reliable guidebooks are these (always carry a map too, of course)

Back when I worked for the airlines and use to travel to a lot of the races, this was before a lot of those alias names were known.
Anyway, I was in the airport with my buddies, and I got on the white courtesy phone and asked them if they could find Dick Hertz.
Less than a minute later, we heard through the airport. "Attention DICK HERTZ to the white courtesy phone!"
They repeated it 2 or 3 times and we were rolling in laughter! 🤣😂
