Absolutely! More fun to get the kit than an RTR.

I have had a lot of RC toys but the first time i went to a real track they were having a race day so I signed up and had a lot of fun but some of the regulars were having tension with another tracks regulars that were there and there was a lot of fighting over a hobby. I had so much fun though that I went into the office and donated money to the track as they were raising money for upgrades. Then I got back to my pits and someone had stolen stuff out of my truck including my brand new factory Honda jacket. I never went back. It was about an hour and a half drive and new tracks opened up closer but none lasted long.

Another weird incident happened when I went to a brand new indoor carpet track. After a few laps there was some rips in the new carpet and some guy comes up to me yelling like a maniac saying one of my cars is known for having screws loosen on the bottom and rips carpets. The guy was screaming and I actually fealt bad but I was looking at my 3 cars, Losi scte, associate 2wd buggy and a Traxxas slash and couldn't find anything. The owner even came over and was very upset. Then the guy yelling runs his car and hits the jump right in front and rips the carpet really bad. It was his car that was ripping up the carpet the whole time.  They apologized and we continued doing laps. Good times.

I had a cool pitbike track in my yard for awhile that was great for the RC fix. I hope to build a cool track here at the ranch eventually if I ever catch up.

We have/had a few motorcycle tracks in SoCal that you went home with less than you brought if there wasn't some to monitor your stuff while you were out on the track.

I got mine mostly already built by a friend of mine who had 5-6 RC cars at any given time.  It was an addiction for him back then, still might be.  The original Wenatchee track was on a sliver of city land that got taken over for a new project but some time after that the RC club of the area got the ability to use and old 'bumper boat' structure that was vacant in a city park.  I think that was pretty popular but eventually that went away also.

The worst that happened to me was a very competitive event and after the heats I went to lunch and left my pit. When I returned and went out for the warmup for the main, someone closed off my high speed screws and I smoked a motor. Luckily I checked the truggy before that race and they had done the same. I have had people do the same in moto with the shock high speed over the years 😐

Have you been to Saratoga RC in Mississippi? I used to race at their old track, when it was indoor, but it got too expensive for me.

Dont most Traxxas cars use a design that puts the servo arm under the chassis as opposed to the more common in race car parallel bell arm steering setup? I've never raced on carpet and haven't raced in some time so I'm not sure if this is the issue.

Realistically, you'd probably want a modern mid motor car which runs better on carpet than rear motors with good lipo batteries. The kyosho mini-z could be a good option or see if they run a 17.5 turn stock buggy class which is good fun and modest to get into.

I didn't take a picture, but there are several screws that have the potential to stick out below the chassis I guess.  It wouldn't be difficult to put a slight countersink in them, but I imagine that most people using the cheapest combo (like I would be) wouldn't think of it enough to actually do it.  They'd charge the batteries, apply the decals, and run it.

I was thinking of a servo setup like this, with the arm below the chassis, sorry for the bad picture.

An rc track having a no Traxxas policy is a bit like a moto track having a no quads policy, it's to keep out a certain type of person.

Anyway, if you are so inclined, I've seen associated b6's kitted with nice electronics going for about $300 on Facebook marketplace, add your Traxxas radio and get a couple good lipo batteries and a charger and that would be a fine start to see if you want to race more.

I should've went the used route too, but that ship already sailed.  Nice thing about building them is it makes fixing and maintaining them a breeze.  Hope I like the carpet stuff.

OldTech knows what's up with the 1/8 scale off road racing.  Man, that shit is fun!  My last club race was Saturday and I am bummed.

Is this a decent car to use for a couple of years?  I think that that the parts list no longer includes the battery.

Are you racing or playing? Those newer cars can be really difficult to set-up, and it takes some fun out of it if you don't like to constantly tinker. If you are going to run it at a track, see what they sell and get something that you can get parts for at that track.

It's a competitive TWD buggy but it looks like someone set it up for very high speed. For someone to remove the slipper clutch and the gearing is very tall, you might have to change some stuff back for smaller off road tracks.

Not a bad deal. As oldtech said there's a lot of mods done so handling and setup are up in the air vs the stock buggy. The D in the name is for Dirt, they started making 2 versions of 1/10 buggies, the standard high traction car and the D dirt low traction version. They made 6.0 to 6.4 versions of that car so there's a lot of intermediate generations of it too.

For parts availability go to amain.com and use the parts finder to see what's made now for any car you might be looking at buying. If you are running at a hobby shop track it's worth checking what they keep on hand as well.

I’d prefer to race it a few times a month with at least one weekly practice in between them. I always got bored easily when using my old one on anything other than a track. The carpet track being so close (actually walking distance unless it’s raining buckets) makes a big difference too, which is why them not allowing the Bandit sucks (though I’m not complaining about their decisions, I’m sure that the carpet ain’t cheap and neither is their building rent).

Right-on, that's awesome! Go to the track on a race day and see what the guys have. Maybe they have something for sale, too. The track may also have a consignment section with cars and equipment for sale, if you're looking at used. You will also want to see what class you want to run, and make sure the car you are getting has the right motor. They're not too expensive, but it's another cost if you're trying to budget.
