This is brilliant. Feld and MX Sports will make more money.

Weege will look good on his pit walks wearing a Vest when he is working for Racer X.

The riders won't be burnt out by answering the same questions over and over.

I bet if you asked the top dogs they would agree with limiting media access.

But limiting content will not help 'grow the sport.'

Moto GP:

Dorna/MotoGP controls MotoGP’s commercial and broadcast rights under its long-term agreement with the FIM.

A standard media credential usually does not give you the right to:

  • Livestream track activity
  • Post extended footage of practice, qualifying or races
  • Film continuously from trackside
  • Produce your own race broadcast
  • Monetize race-action compilations
  • License race footage to another company
  • Use onboard screens or TV-feed footage
  • Record in restricted garages or technical areas without approval

Short interviews, paddock atmosphere and behind-the-scenes content may be permitted, but the current credential agreement may impose clip lengths, locations, posting delays or platform restrictions.

If you are filming content for a sponsor, company, team, product or branded social campaign, MotoGP may classify it as commercial content—even if it looks like an ordinary Instagram Reel. That usually requires prior written approval and potentially a negotiated rights fee.

For example, if you posted paddock interviews and event-atmosphere photos as genuine coverage, that might be approvable. If another Brand or sponsor or another partner then used those images in an advertisement, that would likely require separate commercial permission. The safe move is to describe every planned use....including sponsor reposting and monetization.....in the application and obtain it in writing.

If something violates the agreement, they can:

  1. Demand removal or editing.
  2. File a platform copyright claim or takedown.
  3. Revoke the credential during the event.
  4. Deny the photographer, publication or company future credentials.
  5. Pursue licensing fees or legal action for serious commercial misuse.

Those things you listed are similar to the way they have been with MX and SX for years now.  The proposed changes are much more restricting and add the element of paying where its been free for press credentials for reporting for a website like Vital or for the local news to run a clip to hype up the race that's coming to town.

Its dumb and they are going to be killing off a lot of publicity that they have gotten for free.  All the random youtubers that have a following of 20 or 30k people are giving fans more info and more reasons to watch the full races.   With all the content we have these days it keeps the hype for the next race building all week.

From Facebook

A pretty major change is apparently coming to SMX media coverage in 2027.

Jason Weigandt says a new 21-page set of media guidelines was just released that includes a new paid credential structure for photographers and videographers, while also drawing a much harder line between “editorial” media and people shooting content commercially for teams, riders or brands.
That distinction already exists to some degree. SMX’s current credential rules say editorial photographers and videographers are only supposed to shoot for the outlet they’re assigned to and can’t distribute that work to teams, racers, sponsors or other third parties.

But adding significant credential costs could change the equation quite a bit.

Motocross media is a pretty small world. A lot of the photos and videos fans see every weekend come from independent shooters and smaller outlets, not gigantic media companies with unlimited budgets.
Depending on what those fees actually look like and how the rules are enforced, 2027 could look very different for the people standing trackside with cameras.

Weigandt made it clear he had only just received the document and was still going through it, so there are plenty of details still to come.

This one is definitely worth watching.

Twenty Three Media said all fan footage will be flagged by NBC next season

Gotta, say this is GNARLY. Talk about BITING the Hand that kinda feeds ya. WOW!! Seems the pretty EXTREME.

Where can I read this?  I’m trying to find the part about fan footage?  Like if you attend a baseball game and film it, or yoy attend a UFC fight and film a viral KO…you can post it on social media.  It’s allowed as long as you aren’t trying to “reproduce a broadcast” or showing the ENTIRE GAME.  But I’ve seen people record full Supercross races like Joeman

This control is all about Feld/MX Sports bending over backwards to get a new NBC deal.

So they are cutting out the alternative media.  It’s not even about money it’s about controlling the narrative and product.

But the REAL POINT I wanted to make is… I watched this happen to the UFC in 2015…. The NEXT YEAR they suddenly sold the company for 4.25 BILLION dollars.  So NBC might just be the excuse they are using.  From what I heard NBC is so happy with views and “video retention” and this is going on the 5th year being on Peacock….

Something big is coming for SMX and they are cuttting all loose ends.  It’s a damn shame.  Look at UFC without media pushing back, it’s almost completely dead.  No superstars were created after the sale.  They are following WWE new method of never allowing one person to become as big as the brand (Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan, Undertaker, etc) just like UFC they created mega hype for Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor that will never be duplicated!. It was all for the sale of the company.

Exactly. NASCAR and INDYCAR are way stricter on what/who you can shoot and don’t even try to license the footage, it’s very pricey.

Why has NASCAR viewership declined so drastically?

1. Stupid Media Rules

2. A “playoff” series created for television, that the fan base despises, ie; SMX.

Like it or not, NASCAR is the biggest motorsport series. There is zero proof that their ratings (which are very high) declined due to their media rules. They’ve had strict rules since the beginning. If anything, they are easier now that every driver has a media guy.
Also, they don’t do the playoffs anymore, it’s back to a points chase.

No legit sport or series is just letting people show up with cameras and make their own content for free.

lol is all I have to say. If I was a race team owner that was funding this business venture for feld, I would find other sports to support. What a shit show.

I don't really know much about NASCAR or their revenue steam, but I believe they get a chunk of the TV coverage. The sponsors also get a bigger logo on the car than could be made on a bike so they probably pay more. Presumably the teams are making money.

Historically, SX was mostly funded by the OEMs to sell bikes. The OEMs are paying for the bikes and rider salaries etc. The more media content the better for them.

Isn't that fundamentally a different business model. Or do Ford Chevy etc pitch in money?

In recent times, energy drinks, insurance companies etc have been sponsors of the factory teams so the distinction is less clear, and one could argue the are transitioning to the NASCAR model. It still sounds like the OEMs pitch in the lions share. So maybe it becomes moot if team sponsors begin paying the majority of the costs and the OEMs don't, but right now it seems like the entire sport exists to sell bikes, and to do that they need media coverage as opposed to a controlled narrative.

If he were to shoot from the fences and upload his footage to YouTube or other major platforms, the promoters would content strike his videos and have them taken down.

How likely is it that it will get removed?

This would probably be covered by the language associated with the ticket purchase plus any local stadium restrictions.  Can’t see anyone going to the extreme of limiting fans in the stands from posting short video clips.  Live streaming - yes. Short clips - I doubt it. Think also commercial vs non-commercial use.

NASCAR is a shadow of its former self.

And this referenced article that states precisely IMG 0775 2.jpeg?VersionId=7WAYNnmPAd2JH7e18CEYthat viewership “dipping to 2.45 million viewers per race across the 38-race slate in 2025 due to a heavily fragmented media rights distribution.”

They ruin their own social media presence because press won't post short videos from practice anymore on these platforms... Silver from the NBA always tells people that those "illegal" highlights and clips from dunks are just free advertising for the NBA. But clearly FELD is thinking something else.

You literally are proving my point. NASCAR at its lowest is about 5-10x ratings that SX. Supercross is usually in the low 6 figures for ratings. (I’m not denying the ratings haven’t dropped since the hay day but it’s not due to randos not being able to create content). In the hay day, only NASCAR Media Group video guys could shoot and they couldn’t leave the track with media, it got turned over to NASCAR immediately.

The fragmented media is referring to the different races being on different networks and streaming vs linear network TV. (FOX get some races, NBC, CW etc)

Don’t take my word for it, go apply for a media credential for NASCAR and tell them you want to stand next to the track and narrate it so you can post on social media and get back to us.

Again, no legit sport or race series lets you just show up and make your own content.

And maybe they should. Look at  how Cleetus Mcfarland has impacted Nascar viewing and how they have been working with him and allowing him to use video.

His events allow just anybody to come and film them and make content. No live streaming , but he understands the value  of all the channels hyping his races up and covering them.  No other "legit" sport has a path for somebody to sign up and compete without having a team and millions of backing. Its been one of the great things about moto.  And I personally love seeing the videos from Youtubers going to races.

It was interesting to see and hear what the C boys  thought about a real race, and Grind hard plumbing. I've seen other youtubers go to races and record  watching some of the racing. And it exposes new markets to the racing and highlights different elements of the racing.  I always find it interesting what people that are not familiar with the sport notice and what stands out to them.

Normally Press day has a lot  of local media there and historically its been used to hype up the races in the local markets.  Local news channels are not going to spend $1k per minute to advertise for SX. Or waste money covering the sport at all. Instead of being in every local news paper and on the local news channels.  Its all gone.  Too big and no longer many of the things that make the sport great.  And I get it nobody cares about those things.

What got F1 a serious bump? Was it extremely tight control of the press?? Or was it a Netflix show that highlighted just the right aspects of the sport and brough it to viewers who normally wouldn't have considered watching?

It all just sounds like a shift towards monster trucks , WWE style BS.  And then again, it could also all be BS to keep certain press out and Feld will negotiate rates down to much more reasonable numbers for favored media.  And if You don't cover it like they want, BOOM Your now paying out the ass for any footage or access.

any race series that institutes some imaginary "playoff" format basically screws the pooch....no fan likes it because it is a stupid concept. no different than the off season  supercross races held in various parts of the world. if riders want the money let them go for it, but there is nothing important about these races.

i'd rather see an mxon effort than the current expanded areancross events
