Good interview. One of the old school champions you don't hear much about.

I talked to Darrell the year of his championship at Red Bud. It was Saturday and they were having amtuer races on the pro track back then the day before the National. So I am sitting there on the gate and up walks Darrell, he had been out scouting the track and I reconized him and said hello. We exchanged a few thoughts about the layout and I wished him luck on Sunday. He was a super nice guy and blazing fast on the bike!

Wow, he looks just like he did back in the 80's! That was one tough dude. I seem to remember him doing several races with a cast or a neck brace, or something? I can't remember exactly, I just remember that it must have hurt like hell to ride with the injury.

I wonder if he's serious about the "one good moto left" comment. Smile

I always wondered what happen to him. I remember one year at Daytona he was being interviewed and said " if you can't beat Bob Hannah you ain't shit" I don't think he did that year but it was pretty funny at the time.

Thanks for posting that.

I know some of you guys with the moto magazine collections have a copy, if so could you please post the picture of the girl with Shultz wearing the "Shu ain't scared" shirt.

His mechanic, Chris Haines, was a friend of mine and from the same home town in New Jersey. In 1981 Chris needed a place to sort the bike out before Unadilla so I met him with his box van and the factory race bike at Englishtown. I got to spin a few laps on it and till this day that stands out as one of the best handling bikes I ever rode. Great interview in Racer X.

ATKpilot, I think he was referring to his ability to make money one final time, meaning "i have one more shot to do this for myself before I retire". He is a super cool guy, very positive and strong.

Darrell & Larry Wosick were the magic duo, funny and crazy, now throw in Donnie Cantaloupi & Danny Chandler into the mix and you have a full blown crazy fest, those guys were moto gods in every right.

Hey is Tim Aston still around? I thought I heard something that he had passed away? I was around him before during and after his accident, what an amazing racer and person, he was sure funny. He flew with that fake leg too.

We prolly know each-other.

Crazy.

Dunno about Tim passing away?

Here's what I do know: An honest to God "Working Class" family that scraped every cent together to go racing. He and his brother are EXACTLY the kinda people this sport needs to stay "true".

They appreciated any and every-thing they got.

Shit, why do I find this stuff...

It makes me cry. "Tim was a great rider with an unlimited future. Tragic. As I recall his family didn't have alot of money but gave him 100% support in any way they could. They were all real proud of him....and for good reason. Not only was he a great racer, but an equally great person.

Me and my buddy AndyMoto have talked alot about Tim. In the 30+ years we've been around MX we've seen a bunch of great NorCal racers from Magoo, Schultz, Turner, Cantaloupi, Lamson, Morias etc. But we agree that Tim Aston would have eclipsed all of them. Godspeed, Tim. "
m. "

It even hit my dad hard...and he hasn't seen them (the Astons) since the '80s.

Yeah I am sure we know each other. Sorry to hear that about Tim, I had heard this but it was vague. Tim Aston was so fucking fast, when I watched him race at Sandhill Ranch, along with Shu, Wosick, Lamson, Chandler, Cantaloupi, both Donnie & Cory, they were all amazing to watch, but Tim was golden out there, he knew every inch of that place along with Rodney Smith too, man I miss those days of racing and that track.

I love the Where Are They Now segments. I've always wondered what became fo Shultz - he seemed to kind of pull a Swink and completely disappear.

i sold some motorcycle parts a few weeks ago to a guy named darrell schultz...i knew it wasnt THE ds...but i got really excited just seeing the name pop up and had to ask if he was a motocross fan...he had no idea that he shared the name of one of my childhood icons.

Thats a great read, In his Suzuki days his mechanic was Jon Slenzak,He was from here in western Mass ,when they were in town for the Southwick National I would go watch Darrell practice at a local practice track. What I remember the most about it was Darrell had a little ritual he did every time Jon made any adjustment to the bike that I never saw another rider do.He would do a series of tight figure eights before he would go out on the track.I guess it made him comfortable doing that.

simply put darrell shultz is a bad mufucker...he looks great and i am proud to say i raced against him and even put a wheel on him more than once. if you raced in norcal back then and wanted to win and be faster-n-shit you had to bang bars with darrell, magoo, wosick and quite a few others. i owe what speed i had to guys like darrell and a few others no doubt about that. i am glad he is doing great...i talked to him by phone about 10 years ago or so and he sounded good back then too.

Stumbled across this today and I have to agree Aston was amazing, he would beat up on the factory guys with his stock motorcycle. I remember a bunch of us going to watch the Golden State Series race at Sand hill ranch where he blew the doors off of Johnny Omara and the rest of them, I remember standing there and everyone asking who he was. I also remember all of us Norcal guys knowing he was the fastest rider around. He tragically lost his leg in a street bike accident going to get a new helmet. I see here he lost his life to cancer and left behind a son. Tim Aston was the fastest mini rider that I had ever seen and he took that speed to the 125's . Godspeed Tim

Good interview. One of the old school champions you don't hear much about.
darrell was a helluva rider, had many a battle with him last century at plymouth and mcgills and many other norcal mx tracks.

if you wanted to win in norcal back then you had to step up your game because every race you were lining up next to darrell, magoo, cantaloupi, wosick and a slew of other riders that had national speed. it definitely made me a better and faster rider back then.

"Not much, actually! They put this big strap around my chest and cinched it up real tight for pressure."

That's a bad ass to go out after a collapsed lung.

We used to call Schultz, "the fastest rider in America..........from crash to crash". DS was a BADA$$ for sure.

And the few times I met him was as cool as could be.

Darryl Schultz was about the only one who could keep up with Magoo in the late 70,s and early 80,s.   I was fortunate enout to grow up and watch Magoo/ Schultz/Cantaloupi/ Danny Turner/ Pat Rickter/ Pat Wilson.  those days were so fun to know that they would all be at Plymouth an Marysville
