Reed is not a privateer by any stretch. Works parts abound on his bikes.

He is not a reconised Factory supported rider, rides for his own team for himself, sure his Van is a little bigger than most privateers and he has some more support around him all provided by himself/ his sponsors.

He is a Privateer

If any other Privateer starting winning races on any brand im sure they would receive as much support from the factory as Reed is doing as a privateer.

yes agree not a privateer in the true sence of the word, as in this day and age it is more than just Factory and Privateer, there is Factory support rides, Privateer teams, and someone like Reeds team which is sort of unique.

Certainly not factory!

Chad's as privateer as anyone who's won an SX in the last decade.

Because you can afford works parts, and the factory is willing to sell you the parts, it eliminates you from privateer status?

This is surprising coming from someone who's usually choking on Reed. The only thing he had that a true privateer doesn't have is his transmission. Everything else he's running can be bought. The major difference between privateer and factory is the amount of parts at your disposal to test and the R and D. Reed is far from factory in those two aspects.

What I meant was, he is at least as privateer as anyone who has won. Meaning, he may not be a true privateer, but he's the closest thing to one that has won an SX in the last decade. My bad, it's late and I'm tired.

Now that makes sense. I'd agree with you there. Fantastic ride from him.

Along with his transmission and some extra bells and whistles, as of late... how many other privateers get to have the factory mechanics and engineers provide them support at a factory test track like Chad now get. I thought after Oakland, Chad said Honda was providing him with testing support.... that's never been the kind of resource a privateer would even have the opportunity to use, is it?

Is CR22 drawing a salary from a factory? If not I think that in it's self would qualify him a privateer.

Id say if one of the other privateers started to finish up the front consistently then the support would come for them too.

Just because you can afford it doesn't mean your not privateer.

What if Oprah decided to race SX and bought all works parts for her bike??

Does that make her not privateer??

I agree. Chad has earned any and all support he gets towards his team's efforts. Quasi-privateer, or not... I imagine he's also earned even more R-E-S-P-E-C-T from some of the upper management at Honda.

he is as much a privateer as that #490 guy... prove it he is a factory rider... what the "works" transmission... really... that does not make him a factory rider I doubt Honda just gave him that... leased maybe, or its off a 09 - 10 left over... big deal!!!!

no factory salary
no factory unobtanium suspension
no trick titanium hubs
no factory hydrolic clutch

he is just as much a privateer as #490 as well as Shaun Kalos was who cruised to the races in his grandparents touring bus back in the day!

really? those are the only two differences between a privateer and a factory rider? or as you put it, the "major" difference. there are so many more differences between the two that you shouldnt even be commenting on the issue.

youve obviously not spent time in both camps.

anyone who's ever raced at multiple levels knows that reed is no factory rider, but he's far from being a privateer. theres four DISTINCT types of riders out there right now.

factory
satellite
private TEAM
privateer

its rediculous how many people just dont get it. but reed is on a private team. which makes him in a worlds better position than being a privateer.

just because he owns the team and invested his own money to get it started doesnt mean hes a privateer. hes on a private team. that he happens to own. but a private team no less. just the same as jgr or harts team.

and if you dont think there is a major difference between being on a private team and being a privateer, go tell that to all the kids who are parked in the PRIVATEER PITS AREA (of which reed is nowhere near).

its not even close. this discussion is so stupid.

none the less i still think what reed is accomplishing is VERY impressive and im definitely rooting for him.

You guys are talkin out yer ass. I personally modify stock parts at Ozzy's direction to make them into works parts (so some stuff isn't really "Factory", any body with a lifetime of knowledge could do some of the stuff that's done). They may have a few special parts, gearbox as was mentioned before, but I can assure you, between what 's on Canards and Grants (and even Windham's) bikes is huge. You've got a lot of slick old timers working on this stuff though, Mitch and Bones and the inside PC guys, as well as Ozzy, Norm Bigelow, Chad's regular crew, and a select few outside craftsmen. Congratulations to all, including me Tongue .

According to most on here, No.

I think alot miss the root of the word Privateer, being Private. Not Factory.

And transmissions can be bought for around $80k a set of ratios, and cheaper by the dozen.

In a few years, they'll all be "privateers". Race teams will be profit-seeking endeavors run by businessmen who make money by attracting sponsors.

When was the last time a privateer won a supercross? Look at it like this - when was the last time a factory effort won a Nascar race?
