It HAS to be a Passport?

Never had an issue with just presenting my state issued driver's license (which is now a Real ID).

I have not been watching the news recently, but if one of the SAVE acts gets passed You will be required to have a photo ID that shows citizenship  status on it.   From what I've seen some posters post, not all states real IDs' show citizenship status . He may  just being proactive to make sure he's got what is needed  to be able to vote. And not wait until its too late to get everything.

There are 2 versions of the SAVE act that I've read,

One requires a photo ID that shows citizenship that meets the requirements of the real ID act of 2005  and there are NO exemptions.

Only a Real ID that shows citizenship status or Passport meet the standards.

And Mail in voting would be extremely limited . Not allowed unless You have some valid reason. And still requires You to go  in person to register .

The other requires proof , You can use a Real ID that displays citizenship, or a Passport.  OR  allows You to use a birth certificate  AND driver's lic.

And finally if You have proof of citizenship that  isn't one of those documents , You can still vote or register to vote by getting an election official to approve You. Pretty much if You can get them to sign off on being a citizen You can vote. But would have to go through that process every time You vote as far as I could see.

This version also has funding for people who qualify to help with the costs of getting the new required documents.

It also has an exemption for 26 states that would only require a valid government issued photo ID and NO proof of citizenship.

Mail in voting would be extremely limited . Not allowed unless You have some valid reason.   You can register by mail by providing copies of required documents.

Keep in mind that Your states can have more strict laws than the federal law.  And these would just be the new federal standards. Checking with Your local government for any changes would be the best thing to do if You want to make sure that You are able to vote when You go to vote next.

To be clear...

I'm 100% for PROVING A VOTERS STATUS BEFORE THEY VOTE...Just in case anyone was wondering.

Now, I'm starting to find you all to be very boring.

It's time to DANCE

I’ve got a real ID, DoD retiree, and VA card, and DD214 in my wallet.

It’ll never be good enough for these fucking crybabies that want all the illegals here and voting. Never mind the dead.

Google said that Texas Real ID's only show that You are in the US legally, not citizenship status.  If this is true, You will need a passport  worst case, or Your birth certificate and drivers lic to be able to register OR vote depending on which version of the SAVE act gets through. Or if states just decide to change the law's on their own to require more strict proof similar to what the SAVE act requires.

I hadn't known that all Real ID's did not prove citizenship status in even a majority of states. That star is on every persons real ID  who is in the country legally.  So the only ID that meets the more strict  standards  nationwide is a passport.

Only a small number of states (such as Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington) issue special Enhanced Driver's Licenses or specific REAL IDs that explicitly print a citizenship indicator on the card.

If the more relaxed version of the SAVE act  becomes law than You could use a birth certificate and ID. Both to register and to vote.

There are 26 states that would be exempt from having to provide proof of citizenship , under the more this version.  Any government issued photo ID would be ok in one of those states.

Last I had heard neither version of the SAVE act was looking like it would make it through.  You can find and read the entire proposed bill and any changes with a little googling. I read both the SAVE act and SAVE AMERICA act.   I do not remember which is which, but the less strict version is the one that had made it the farthest along in the process last I checked. Of course they could make changes to them. But the main thing they want is a single national voter registration database.   Sounds nice and safe. Instead of having to collect voter data from around the country, China can just steal/hack or buy it all in one place.  As it is, many states do just hand it over for free or very little money. So it's not like its kept super secure anyway.

I'm not posting this because I don't think it's a good idea to prove You are a citizen. I'm posting to hopefully help people make sure they are able to vote when they go, if the laws change before the next election.  Because no matter what You believe You'll still need the  ID's.

You're aware you could have just brought a copy of your birth certificate, right? Oh, but then you wouldn't have been able to play victim on Vital. Oh woah is me. Have the best day ever. 🤡

Just take a vacation to the Caribbean or somewhere and go have a board meeting for MotoHose before you sell it, then just write the passport off as a business expense.  Problem solved.

You’re out on the road in the Motorhome AND preparing to retire to that life, once you sell your business…

AND…the ONLY REASON you got your passport was so that you can vote?

Uh, no.

On the other hand…you’ve provided, yet, another example of the type of people that some of us have been laughing about.🤣

He acquired a passport in order to be able to cross foreign borders, and re-renter this country legally.

A birth certificate and valid driver's license, or state issued ID, are required for obtaining a passport.

So... he already had the proper documents needed in order to cast his vote.

If I walked in to vote with my 65 year old folded up birth certificate (yes I have the original) saying its me do you really think I would be able to vote with it?

Everything is so in the air With all the flip flopping going on whats valid and my passport had expired I wasn’t going to risk it. Same for my wife

Im still not sure if I can vote on who moves forward on Lindsey Grahams replacement.in a few days.

BTW filing took 3 days to get our picture to work and that was having the pic done at CVS passport 2 times and didn't work.

BTW its finally filed and the amount is now up to $170 each for both of us.

If the real ID doesn’t prove who you are, why the heck did we spend billions implementing it? It increased lines at DMV, and doesn’t get us on an airplane faster.

I’m all for proving you’re a citizen to vote. I’m more questioning the real ID not being valid.

Bro, I get a passport & a passport hard-card, Global card and I have a coupl'a other IDs that work alllll the damn time.

Here are my questions:

Are you saying your state won't let you vote?

Are you implying the Safe Act has already passed and you're required to have these new forms of ID in SC, already?

SC bleeds republican so its up and down on what will work to vote so we are not risking it incase its a must to even vote.

We never had a passports until my wife went to Poland with her mother to do ancestry and then we both got them.

I had never been outside the USA in the past until We crossed into Canada at Niagara Falls and our drivers license was fine then. Even on a couple cruses I didn't remember ever having to show our passport our drivers licenses worked but we did have them.

A SC drivers license wont work at an airport unless you did something that they didn’t even offer the process of doing for several years.

Like said this is another tax forced on every USA citizen to pay that they really don’t need before unless they are traveling to another country.

I was in my early 40's when I re registered in MA. And my original birth certificate wasn't good enough.  I had to go and get a copy of it. Mine did not have some set of numbers on it that were required.   It's not crazy to think that could happen with a lot of people. I was TURNED away in MA. A state that legally doesn't require ID  to vote.  But  You have to provide it  and proof of citizenship via a number on Your birth certificate  when You register, and locally, I've always had to give a regular driver's lic.  I had to get a new copy before I could go and register.  At the time it was during Covid and that presented a bunch of delays that wouldn't happen now. But I had waited until the last minute so I missed out on voting.

No big deal for me, But it would have been nice to know ahead of time so I could have gotten everything done in time.  That's all I am trying to get across with my posts. That it might not be the same as it always has been, and to prepare for that.

I haven't seen anybody say they want non citizens to be able to vote on here.   On my post I was explaining what could be required. No opinion of  why. Just letting people know what they may need.  States can adopt the SAVE act laws without them being federal.

It was illegal for non citizens to vote 68 years before it became a federal law. I have seen that some states are enacting elements of the SAVE act. Personally I would rather have a bunch of people on here think I'm an idiot and try and let them know that things may have changed , even if the Save act isn't enacted at the federal level. Your state could enact parts of it that would change the voting process.

Not saying it's good or bad, just that if Your state is one of the states changing stuff up, You might just not be able to vote if You are not prepared ahead of time.

It kind of reminds me of gun laws. They keep adding or trying to add new ones all the time and as most of us know, those rules and laws do not keep bad guys from getting guns. Just good guys.

In SC like all the rest of the sates where you have to prove you are a citizen to file and get the voters card. We also present a drivers license for them to check records that you have not already voted and another location every time ……  and it’s always been that way at least for the 20 years I have lived here.

Thats the problem they want us to prove it differently than it’s always been by making it even more difficult for Citizens to do just because they might not have voted the way they wanted you to vote.

It’s not like they have a massive list of illegals that have voted or they would have shared it! Over many years nationwide its what 5 ??? OH NO that may have affected the local vote by what 1 vote in the few places that it happened?

Yah its not always worth the cost of stopping something totally.   If it can't be proven that people have voted illegally in large numbers, than it's unlikely to be stopped by these laws, if it is happening like some fear.  But they could always  make fake stuff still , if they are not playing by any rules  really what's to stop them from faking the needed info if they are already doing it well enough to not get exposed?

It is so much more likely to stop people that are legally voting . Similar to gun laws like Borg said. Hurting the people who follow the laws more than the people they are intended to stop from breaking them.

It is funny the parallel that there is with both.  Not at the exact same levels . But it's strange to see how politics has some people arguing the point they are against when it comes to gun laws, and vice versa.    In my opinion voting is one of the most important rights there is. I would say it's right there  with the most important ones.

If Somebody  is   reading  this that is against any sort of gun laws and for the more restrictive ID requirements maybe they can  explain  what makes that right more important than the right to vote?  If You need to prove to be a citizen to register to vote and to vote. Register the required amount of time before an election. What's wrong with having similar restrictions on owning a firearm?  If You're against putting laws in place that would stop more legal gun owners from owning guns than illegal ones and that is the reason You are against the laws. How can you be for a law that would do similar things to people's voting rights ?

I've watched Trump saying that all that would be required is a photo ID, a drivers lic. When he was talking about the version of the SAVE act that would require photo id that also displayed proof of citizenship.  I would think he would know the details of the bill that is so important to him. And misleading people into thinking they only need their lic will end up stopping people from voting. I don't know why he would want to do this. It seems like it would impact the people who listen to him and trust him the most. AKA his most loyal followers. I would think it would hurt republican candidates.

People that go to vote and do not have the correct ID might be unable to get it intime to vote  in that election if They are not prepared. If You find out on the day You are voting, chances are You will not have enough time to get the needed documents. And the original won't always work when it comes to birth certificates.  So unless You know before Your going to vote, what You need. There is a chance You may be unable to vote.

F@*k the voting.

I got my passport to take advantage of $90 round trip flights from the TJ airport to Cabo. No big deal now to go to Cabo for the weekend. Incredable deal. And it's off season now, resort rooms can be had for $150.

If it can't be proven that people have voted illegally in large numbers, than...

Are you claiming we don't have different categories of "people"? Like "permanent residents", "citizens",....

While voting is limited to citizens, The second amendment does not appear to be. But what do I know from an 8th grade civics class?

Would you also be claiming a permanent resident does not have the constitutional protection of unreasonable search and seizure? Which just happened to come from that same constitution that says 'we the people of the united states" as you put it?
