Damon J. Smith Interview

Edited Date/Time 1/24/2012 1:55pm
So after reading all the discussion about rider #490, Damon Smith, I decided to track him down and give him an opportunity to share his story.

Check it out!

I think since he excelled at all other sports, the mx thing is a real challenge that drives him because he cannot conquer it IMO! Hats off too him, IMO he should try to kill it at the local level!

With his background and all he needs to nad up and just hit the triples and not worry if he breaks his legs. Might not hurt to try and at least double through the whoops as well,

IMO - he should not be out there unless he can step it up a bit. This is Pro not A class.

He does come across like a decent dude. But he also speaks like a politician, and is sponsored by lawyers that sue people involved in motorcycle accidents.

Makes me wonder who would racers not mind seeing get sued.

I like how he played the "your an idiot if you think I have alterior motives" card. Decent diversion tactic. Or the truth. Could be either.

Glad everyone enjoyed the interview. Definitely a cool guy with an interesting background, and some great info. I agree with what mxb said, and that drive he has is something awesome.

And as for it being hard to read, that's my fault for how the site is set up and how I formatted the text. Sorry about that... I just wouldn't be me if I didn't goon something out haha... I agree myself though, and I'm actually adding an extra space between questions to help a little.

Thanks for the read.
Enjoyed it.

However,I still think the guy needs to shave 10seconds plus a lap off his time before he goes back out there.
Then he would be up to/close to the speed standard.

Great interview. Seems almost scripted though, the way he rattles off his history and accomplishments.

But regardless, very interesting person who obviously is motivated to succeed at anything he tries.

Still do not think he is ready for SX.

Keep practicing and try again, at the rate he is learning he could probably pick up 10 seconds a lap by the time Vegas rolls around. Imagine the internet chatter if he came back in a few months and was actually competitive (with the other back markers) and possibly made the night show?

He was born in 1971.
He tells people he is 29(so I have heard).
But public records show he is 39 on his way to 40 soon. Wink

I respect the guy. Im a little older then him and I cant ride as good as him. I have no doubt that he will be much faster in a short time.
Good read.

Because the usual suspects of motoboards hate the dude, but none are willing to fire up a bike and boot him from the gate.

Great job dude! Haven't even started reading it yet, however, i'm stoked!

I think it's great you did this. I also think it is lame the moto industry turned the other way on a GREAT story.

Thats pretty good for a 40 year old to even be on SX track after not riding most of his life.

Dude, how anybody can rip on a guy for doing a triple at a supercross track and qualifying for loretta's after only several years of riding - when most of those mother-fuckers having been riding their entire life - is beyond me!

I'm totally buying this guy's book, and going to try and get him to sign it.

Damon J. Smith is badass!

Awesome read, the guy really knows how to sell himself (which is great). I think this interview spoils a lot of the speculation for the fact that the guy clearly has a passion and appreciation for mx and sx (perhaps more than most). Also, it's funny how many people can lose perspective on who's a "good rider" when all they watch is sx heats and main events. There are a lot of riders out there who -when comparing style and smoothness- are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum than say a Reed, RV2, Stewart, etc, but who still try to qualify at these pro events. Whether "Mr. 490" continues racing the sx qualifiers, or steps back a little to progress his skill and have a better chance at making the evening program, I'll be routing for him.

He seems like he is a self promoter and kind of full of himself and hypes up his accomplishments more than what they are. Just track down some you tube videos he makes of himself. I don't know-something about him rubs me the wrong way but I may be way off. Just my feeling.

I must say though-I am 37 and I have always dreamed of busting my ass for a couple years and making it on a Supercross track so I must give him props for that because I am too lazy and unmotivated to try and live my dream.

In any class where you are not on the pace that badly its makes you and the sport look like a joke.

Does he not get that?
