You can close the tailgate on a 6 ft bed only if you load your bike diagonally.
I load my bike diagonally, with the front wheel on the driver's side so that it doesn't block my view where it matters.
I have a 5’ Tacoma bed. Not even close to being able to shut the tailgate with my YZ125.
Thanks guys
I have a long bed Tacoma and just use an AMP research bed extender. Then the bike is in straight without a problem.

As others have said, no-go with the short bed and closing the tailgate. My 2nd gen I had the extended cab and long bed and now the 3rd gen I have double cab with long bed. Both configurations are a bit harder to find than the typical double cab short bed. I can get the tailgate closed if I swing the rear of the bike over, but not if it's straight in. But I have friends with the 5ft bed configuration and they just run a Motogate or some type of extender gate. I run a Motogate when I'm hauling 2 bikes, which I don't do very often.
I got the 5 ft bed. I load my bike up on the right side of the bed and turn the handlebars all the way left. The front tire contacts the front most side of the bed and the right wheel well. It feels secure like this and I use a MotoGate strap tailgate since my actual tailgate cannot close. Gives me peace of mind to keep all my other stuff in the bed. I love my Tacoma and it works well enough to get to the track safe 👍
IMO, a 5-foot bed is not sufficient for a motocross rider's needs. However, you can get really creative if that's all you have.
I have a 6-foot bed on my Tacoma and it was barely enough for a little while there. Now the kids are a little older and I don't have to do this anymore:
Bring back pickups with beds long enough to get motocross bikes in straight and get the tailgates up! Tired of these pussy-ass short beds!
I have the 5 foot bed and have a ready camp, which is a ramp to get the bike in/out and a tailgate extender worth every penny.
You can do it if you want to. I had a 1st gen Tacoma with a 5’ bed, we would put two full size bikes in and tow a 16’ trailer. I welded the hitch on as far back as possible. It worked good enough, I just couldn’t turn quite as sharp as I could with the tailgate up.
Now I’ve got a crew cab long bed and a 35’ trailer, sometimes I miss the tiny rig.
AMP Research makes these specifically designed for Moto and the 5’ small truck beds.
You guys aren't trying hard enough. Definitely can be done in a 5ft / 1500mm bed/tub with the tailgate shut.
Here in Aus the standard Hilux (Tacoma) Dual cab beds/tubs we have are approx 1500mm. Pretty common for guys to have the tailgate up with a full size bike. If your bed has a plastic liner this might change.
Has to be angled just right with the steering turned, it will almost 'lock in' when the tailgate is closed.
Good luck!

My 1500 checy had longer bed, didn't even know they existed and we still have 2 bikes with the tailgate down.
My kid is gertinf a colorado, so this thread is fitting. Thanks
I took a trip this last few days and covered a couple thousand miles I was shocked at how many people had mountain bikes that basically sitting over top of the rear fender on trucks with blankets under them.
We live in a sad world when you can't even fit a bicycle in the back of a pickup truck unless it's sideways
It's not because they don't fit; it is because they come much closer to self-stabilizing with the front end over the tailgate, and you don't have to worry about them flopping around in the bed.
Make El Caminos great again
My 04 Ranger would lock the bike in diagonal. I forgot to strap it one day no problem. Was a good little moto truck.
