I have a bit of a dilemma and im looking for insight. My son started racing moto last year after many successful years racing in the woods, and had big dreams of making it to Lorettas this year. Well, fast forward one year and here we are. We went to two areas for two regions, he qualified in both. This past weekend we went to our first ever Regional and sure enough he qualified for the big show in his first attempt, if I sound proud, its because I am. Now thats out of the way, hes been on Hondas since last year and it has been going extremely well, and I am going to get a fresh bike for Lorettas. I can get a standard R model from a dealer weve always worked closely with, $8300 out the door. Or, I have been lucky enough to find a WE model VERY close to home at a dealer, $12,700 out the door. My question is this, is the WE 4000 dollars better than the standard R? I understand the WE can be raced in Limited, thats a plus. Both bikes will have Art of War do the suspension so thats an additional cost for both. For the guys that have ridden both, which direction would you go and why? I am also factoring in resale value as well.

Edit- I have made the decision to buy another standard R model. Larsons Honda in MN is shipping me one in a crate to my door for $8087, which in my opinion is a phenomenal deal especially considering I dont have to drive anywhere to pick it up.

Congratulations that's huge!  Is he racing 450 or 250 class?  I'm not current on the regulations for LL, but if he is racing 250 and motor mods are not allowed I'd splurge for the WE.  In 450 it's less important as the standard one is plenty fast.  I would say that absent slotting into rules it's hard to justify a $4k premium for the WE.

he qualified in limited class? I'd go WE. I mean spending thousands of dollars to make it to loretta's & sign up, etc. It will hold a decent value if you want to sell it after. It will definitely give him the best shot in the limited classes. Not so much the "power difference" but the exhaust & suspension are the big ticket items.

If you buy a stock 450 then bolt on all the extras see what all the extras will cost?

butttt i have heard the stock crf is unreal good.

Honestly probably depends if you are looking to do good or just enjoy the experience. C limited, bike doesn't matter as much. if it's B limited, everybody going to be on a WE, SR, FE.

I'm going to go the other way. If your son qualified on his first try, he's going to smoke a lot of dudes on special editions. There may be some riders who are faster AND can use the extra goodies, but it's my contention that a tight, fresh, new bike with a good setup should be enough at Loretta's. Imagine what you can get out of that standard model with $4400 of extra parts! You've already committed to doing the suspension either way; what else is there on the WE? A Yosh pipe? What else? Special cam or something? Save some cash and use it to finance the trip to Tennessee.

Get the R.  Do the suspension and a yoshi Pipe! It’ll be dialed in 😎

If it’s a limited class get the R and do the suspension 😎

Congrats to you both! Making it to Loretta’s is serious biz.  Your kid must be a ripper and you should be proud man!!!

That $4300 difference will make a decent dent in the Loretta's expenses.
The best bike for Loretta's will be the one that stays upright for all 3 motos and doesn't have any issues.  Stay out of trouble in the first turn, don't fall during the motos, and being consistent will bring a good overall result.

Vital already asked this question and wrote a whole article about it. They priced it out and its cheaper to buy the WE than to buy the parts separately and put them on. They said it would cost $5000 to buy the parts on your own but the WE is only $2900 more. In your case the WE is $4000 more but youd still be saving $1000 over doing it yourself.

All that being said $8300 is a super deal. Id much rather personally spend $8000 now than $12,000, and Id upgrade as needed over time. Thats me though I’m not racing lorettas, in your sons case hed be able to race the WE in the stock class so thats a pretty nice advantage to take into consideration.

Oh and as far as reselling, WEs do seem to hold value pretty well.  It's rare to see a recent WE in my area for less than. $10k used and Rs are regularly in the 6-7k range.  With the 27s coming out though as all new (assuming we are talking 450s) the 26s are likely to take a bigger hit than usual.

I'd get the regular R.

Then upgrade to the 27 HRC WE next year

For a 450 I'd get the R. For 4k you can get the suspension setup, mapped vortex and a spare wheel set with 2k left over. For a 250 it's more debatable but probably the R still.

From my experience at the ranch, all I can preach is practice starts. Cannot emphasize this enough. Especially if it’s C class. The track will be like nothing you ever rode before. Don’t be suprised if the 6th place guy at the regional wins the title.

With that being said, don’t get the WE, just use some of that $$ to put a fresh scoop tire on every moto. Get a start & survive! With that he’s got a good chance of ending up under the tent.

Great job qualifying in his 1st year!

The WE already has upgrades on it that the stock R doesn't have.

I see the title says 250 now.  I'd do the WE 250 as that little bit of power will probably matter.  Your pricing looks to be 450 pricing though.  A WE 250 retails for $10.7k.

I think this late in the '26 MX selling season, it's pretty hard to find a new 250WE.  Mine was delivered in January (ordered in November) and had frame number xxxx492 (out of the 500 that were reported to have been made available for sale in the US).  Even last November, when there were more around, a lot of dealers were trying to upcharge the MSRP.

Base MSRP for the 250 is 10.7 but add the BS fees that every dealers puts on and this is what we get for pricing.
