2 stroke poll: Fuel Injection or Carb?

5/29/2026 10:09am

I would be pk with FI bikes if we could tune them completely like you can a carb.

Any FI bike 2 or 4 that gives me complete control over my mapping like I would have if I bought get and the Maya software or carb bike will get my money everytime over any brand even if its the worst bike by far. Its sucks to build my own package but then need someone else to tie in my fuel, timing ignition.

Love my XCW300, TBI plus Oil injection. Thing is so smooth and is the easiest bike I’ve ever rode. Will crawl like a tractor in the white map, and will pull hard on the track in the green.

Personal experience:

Lectron sucks, always lean under load. No ones going to tell you their 800 dollar carb sucks, though.  However i will say the partial throttle feels pretty good, I guess, if "partial throttling" is what you're doing (woods maybe?)  My application was outdoor MX,

Best set up is either:

  1. a shortbody Air Stryker 38/39mm, don't take that Suzuki needle advice, those Suzuki needles are lean to compensate for the power jet function at high RPMs. If you DO run the Suzuki or Yamaha CDI that allows for power jet function, the Suzuki needle is great.  On anything else, it's hard to jet right.
  2. The Mikuni TMX, but you need to swap the Nozzle, (it's what the main screws INTO on that carburetor) from the S8 it comes with, to the S9. If you have a Honda with this carb, don't swap for the twist top Keihin like all the non-jetting guys swear by.

If you REALLY want to get into it, you can get an aftermarket CDI, with a multimap function, integrate the TPS sensor on the airstryker carb, so you have, in my case, 5 maps, one for each 20% of TPS value, with independent powerjet open/close control. This way you can jet a little leaner down low and pop the power jet right exactly where the pipe/motor combo wants it.

I haven't ridden a 2 stroke EFI bike. Just carb'd Kawisaki's and a 125  Yamaha.

Never had too much of an issue with carbs to dislike them. Any issue was my own IE letting it sit and gunk up.

4 Stroke though, FI all day.

Did you have a build thread on here for a YZ360 under a different name?

Since 2 strokes are super simple to work on , I prefer to have a carb on smokers such as on my YZ250.

Since modern 4 strokes already have far more moving parts and are more complicated to work on than smokers, I prefer FI on 4 strokes such as on my FC350 and EXC-F 500.

I appreciate that manufacturers still make 2T”S with carbs but also appreciate any manufacturer that wants to push 2T technology …best of both worlds…….

That's a tough one. I love the the tbi ktms I've ridden. The fuel injected counter balanced bikes feel so smooth but also rip at same time. But hard to beat a well jetted carb bike too. As a current 02 cr250 owner that's currently messing with this pos mikuni, right now I think I'll take the tbi bike. Just sick of messing with jetting thing has me pulling my hair out. Ready to put a keihn on it and call it a day.

Tsp makes a module where you can do exactly what you are describing.  Can tune everything yourself pushing buttons.

Now if it just came with the bike.  Sucks that they lock the ECU on you and force you to spend a bunch more money just to get the thing to run acceptably.

Its interesting.  Everyone i know that buys a yz including myself buys pipes, silencer, skid plates, hand guards, heads, different carbs or atleast jetting kits and so on.  Thousands of dollars.

You buy an efi bike and buy a module to tune the motorcycle ( i dont find it needed but im not a top 4% rider in the world like most here )  and its "should come with the bike'.

Myself I appreciate ktm and possibly kawi and others pushing advanced tech in dirtbikes.  I think its awsome.

Everybody buys all that stuff for the TBI bikes also!  On top of the Stuff needed to tune the EFI, which is much more expensive than the few jets needed for a carb bike.
