So, against by better judgment, I’m going to polish this turd to build my 12 year old self’s ultimate ‘94 CR125. When I was a kid, the 94 125 shootout in Dirtbike is what gave me the bug. I’ve wanted one forever.
This started as a budget build, but I’ve been modifying my plans a bit. So far, the frame and engine are the only salvageable bits. Everything else sucks. This thing is all kinds of beat, but the frame is straight and the cases are intact.
I have a question for those in the know…does anyone have any pictures of the frame weld enhancements that would have been done on works bikes during the mid to late 90s? I’ve read about them over the years, but can’t seem to find any photos.
Also, anyone in PA know anything about “Combat Competition Suspension”?

I’m sure the linkage will be a breeze to take apart.

I dig the two tone wheels (and fork tube).

FMF?

How does one even do that to pegs, let alone both of them?

I used two quarts of ATF, some marvel mystery, and broke two hammers getting the cylinder off.

No telling how long it sat outside with the exhaust port missing. Crusty.

The standing water was all the way up to the carb.

Thanks! Yes, that’s the article I was thinking about!
How about any small outfits that make truck repro parts? I stumbled upon SPD here, and they make some cool stuff.
Made some progress this week.
Got the engine apart and split. Aside from a shot clutch basket, crank assy, and a few small wear items, not much drama inside the engine. With as much water that was in the crankcase, I was expecting some major pitting. Not bad. Surprisingly, the coolant, even though it appeared empty at the radiator, ran bright and clear from the head. The two tablespoons of gear oil however, was sludge. No water, but nasty.
Got it blasted and I’m shipping the cylinder off to Millennium in the morning. I have all new seals and bearings on the way. I decided to go OEM.
Had a section of exposed threads by the countershaft, so I threw a brass set screw in it and welded it up. It looks like that’s a fairly common from with this gen. I’ll try my best to clean it up.
Started the frame work, and have it in an electro tank. Hopefully it’s not too bad in the morning. I once did a gas tank and when I pulled it out, it was Swiss cheese.
I thought about a purple powdercoat to match the ‘95 HoT graphics but thought it might be too much. My son is insisting on it, so maybe.

I would prefer the original coloring and decals myself. The -94 is one of the best looking Honda CRs ever made
I agree, but I still think the 95 is the best looking CR. I can't decide between a stock '94, Henry '94, a HoT '95 or a stock '95. I recently rebuilt my childhood best friend's '94 RM and went stock (I never liked any of the factory or aftermarket kits for the RM anyway), so a stock '94 would be cool.
He was a spoiled kid and his parents bought him a new RM in ‘94, and I bought a clean 83 YZ100. I held on to my YZ all these years, and when he learned that my kid was starting out, he sold me the RM to keep it in the family.
The day we brought it home.
Me on the YZ and my buddy on the RM, at Good Times, probably in ‘95 or ‘96.
Back together again.
All freshened up.

Wow, that bike was rough. That has to be one of the worst clutch baskets I've ever seen.
Great start to bringing the old girl back to life! The cases etc look great.
Looking forward to seeing it progress
Wasn’t able to get much done other than weld over the foot peg pin holes, fill in some gouges, and fabricate and weld in the subframe crossbar.
Did what I could with the bits I have to blend the repair. I’ll try again with better bits when I get them.
Not much by way of progress, but I got the little XR running again. Had to replace the cylinder, piston and carb. Also relaced a new rear wheel, and just need to do the front.
I wasn’t happy with how the CR swing arm was coming out, so I decided to build a bigger vapor hone cabinet so I can blast it.
Got the top end back from Millennium, so I can start reassembly.
Great build so far. Outstanding work.
how do the dogs on your gears look like? And Would you mind showing the porting and exhaust side of the cylinder?
I think I might be with your son on this, that purple frame would look very unique and a head turner. There's tons of old stock builds, that '95 HOT look would be an incredible sight in the pits.
Not bad, but the 3rd-4th on the main shaft needs to be replaced.
Savage! Nice work so far.
That's certainly a project!
Not much other than acquiring parts, but I’m trying to figure out the forks. I have a set of 47mm forks from an ‘07 CRF250r, ‘06 CRF triple clamps, 07’ CRF hub, and CRF front brake assy. I’m assuming I use the CRF clamps, but I’ll be swapping the stem from the ‘94 CRF clamps?
Also, does anyone know what shock or swingarm I can use? Up to 97 CR125 and 96 CR250?
Also, PSA to get a small XR. They’re the tits.
