Kawasaki is bringing the two stroke back!

4/16/2026 5:16pm

Too lazy to read 75 pages. Are the new kawi 2 strokes any good? Might buy one.

They're so good, there's a waitlist so long you can't even buy one. You missed out brother.

The xcw are pretty much a modern version of what you described. Mellow power, soft suspension.

I do get what your saying, a low tech option, carbed OC plush forks etc, I just think that market is tiny in an already small market.

And there are some companies that make what you are describing but you probably wouldn’t like who is making them.

The yz250x lack of lighting coil is a $200 fix.  It’d be nicer if they came with e-start though.

Yeah - there is the GPX option, so maybe you are right, if Kawi came out with a 'trail' bike at $7k, you could go buy a KTM for $9-10k or a GPX for $5k....it's kind of in no mans land.

The XCW are good - but they are $ and are slanted more on the race end of the spectrum relative to a KDX or XR.  I have a 00' XR400 and it still a great bike along side my more modern KTMs.

It's $200 + wiring + headlight + rectifier and it's only 25W which is marginal at best and once you add a flywheel weight, low comp head, lighting stuff, soften the sus....probably better off just buying a XCW at that point TBH.

The XR400 is a great bike. Bullet proof.  While that was a trail bike it was also capable raced a lot. Much of the development in the Japanese side at that time was all focused on MX bikes.

The crf300 MSRP is 5000.  I think if you put good suspension and a better frame/geometry you are probably knocking on the door of 8k and then like you said you are kind of in no man’s land market wise. And if you did all that the engine becomes the weak link and kind of out of place imo.

Yeah - you are right and probably the same conclusion the brass at the Japanese companies came to, but I guy can wish.  You are right, I think that 300f has 25 hp, it's less of a performance engine even relative to the older XR250R's.

The XR was kinda neat since it was a 'trail' bike but still had the R moniker and we obviously saw what the guys back in the early 2000's were doing on them included BBR....and of course Scott on the XR6.  I actually really like the sus on the XR400 on trail rides, even faster spirited ones, it works with the chassis really well.

I feel like Mr Garvey about to freak out.  Ya’ll best to stop this foolishness and reserve this thread for some real KX updates.

plot twist, the Chinese have stolen the plans and will come out with it before Kawi does. Then when Kawi finally releases it, everyone will say the Kawi is a copy of the Chinese brand.

I'd go buy a modern iteration of a KDX200 tomorrow or a modern XR400....huge gap in the full size "trail" market with a simple, reliable bike.

I'd love me a YZ250X but they lack headlight/wiring circuit but I am confident could be made into a good trail bike with some detuning mods.

Depends if I'm feeling like a smoker day or thumper day. For those trips it can be the KDX250 or the XR650R. I'm a bit on the bigger side, so the KDX200 and XR400 get a we bit anemic at altitude!

And also depends how stupid the trip is going to get. If stealth is also going to be a requirement, KDX it is!

XR650R on backcountry single track sounds like a lot of fun!  I had a 250EXCF that was super modded out, took it to ID and did a bunch of big high elevation stuff - absolutely worthless, spent 50% of the time in 1st gear at 9000 RPM, I'm ~200.

Done any riding down in the Beaverheads?

Depends on use case, there is still an argument for the late 90's offroad bikes when they were more slanted to trail riding vs racing; i.e. large tanks, softer sus, mild power, headlights, durable machines.  I had a 1996 KTM 250 EXC, came stock with a 3.2g tank, could ride 90 miles on that thing, steel subframe, plush sus, awesome bike.

I wish Honda would do something like put their CRF300F engine in a full size bike with good sus.

Enough guys detune their KTM's with low comp heads, low gearing, Reklus, flywheel weights, etc. that I think a full size trail bike would sell well.

I wanna like those but sus, 7/8th's size chassis, kinda falls in the 'meh' category but ticks a lot of boxes on paper.  I've ridden several.

I do think brands like CF and Kove, (less convinced by GPX)as they become more accepted may be able to provide a bike like what you are describing.  But consumers are going to be slow to adopt because of the stigma around Chinese made items.

But if you look at some of the vehicles they are producing they are easily on par with Japanese and American made.

Once I get that far south I keep heading farther and end up down by American Falls. Not sure why, I know there is good riding there, just what inevitability happens!

Have ridden in the Pioneers (Wise River/Wisdom) to the North of there for decades up until the Alder Creek/Christiansen Fires wiped almost everything out a few years ago. Can still hit a few trails to the East of there, but it's majority two track/ATV. All the great single track got destroyed by the fires.

Just over 10 years ago I sold my cherry 2003 XR250 and I kick myself every single day for it. What an awesome bike that thing was, just didn’t appreciate it at the time.

They are fun/neat bikes and ridden within their design parameters are incredible machines.  My first bike was a 1989 XR250, thought it was dorky and stupid, my dad bought it for me in ~1992ish and it was barely ridden.  I really wanted a RMX250 though.  But it worked great, never gave me problems, but never forget how much fun I had on that exploring.  Jumping on my 2000 XR400 gives me the same vibes and just feels like home.  Clean XR's are out there, reasonably priced too.

That was more of a fun photo shoot vs anything that is practical, I could ride from truck to trailhead I wouldn't tackle any proper trail with that setup.

Coming into the late 90's that was the hot privateer setup....I remember watching a 4T national race, Albany, OR I think....can't remember who was on the XR400 though, popular rider at the time.

Been so long ago I can barely remember. You remember the guy that was a multi time woods champion that rode the XR600 Scott Summers, I got them from his company SRC/Summers Racing Components.

I like your fork guards - where did you get those?

I’m not sure but was it Spud Waters or Walters… something like that.

76 pages about new kawi 2 strokes and it took an XR sidebar to make it worth checking in on

The XRs are cool and all guys but every time I see this thread bumped to the top and I open it, I am once again given false hope.
