Sucks when it goes right through the filter…. Had it happen to me at Mexico/ MotoMasters years ago…when their watering system was non existent…suggestions: 1. Spray on filter oil ,probably good for 90% of conditions…for super dry dusty conditions, I only trust Maxima in the tub and soak it/ wring it out method…total saturation. 2. Twin air filters…they are the best…3. A filter oil saturated pre filter…If Twin air does not make one for your bike, go to a pool supply store and buy the filter skimmer top nylon covers…they are the same as the PC1 pre filters, they have an elastic band so they can be stretched right over your standard filter, these should be saturated in filter oil also. 4. I”m not too familiar with Yz air intake but if any open holes to airbox, I would cut up an old air filter & stuff in openings with the filter pieces…
2024 450 here. Vet B rider… 61 hours and havnt touched a single thing other than change oil every 3-4ish hours and oil filter every other oil change. Air filter sometimes will last me 3 rides before I would consider it “dirty”. I love the air filter location when washing the bike, unless you get right under the cover with a pressure washer or have a vented cover the filter never gets wet and you don’t have to worry about constantly changing it. I never ride super dusty conditions though, usually prepped/ over watered Southern California tracks. I’m nervous about the rod issue I keep reading about but I’m easy (slow) on the bike and not a revver or clutch abuser. I also have my tuning wayyy dialed back to smooth it out so it’s probably running a few less hp than stock lol. I’m confident I can make it to 80 hours before doing an overhaul and will most likely split the cases and do an upgraded rod or crank just for the piece of mind.
mind sharing the tune youre running?

I have a 23' here with 120+ hours, A off-road racer. Change oil every 3 hours with T6 Rotella. Bike has been amazing with no issues at all. I also have a 25' 450 with 40+ hours on it that is prestine. I run both bikes on the "Linear" or "Linear Torque" settings that come with the yamaha tuner app. Love these bikes.
A friend of mine who is a +50 expert just bought a '26 because his '23 shit the bed, BAD. (He fixed it and is using it as a desert bike now.)
I don't know what his actual problem was, but it destroyed the top and bottom end. It had a lot of hours on it - probably 100+. He's pretty good with maintenance but not a freak like some of us are, haha.
Yeah, definitely go with Maxima FFT or Bel Ray pour on oil for those tough conditions. And, you're right, should have thrown a fresh filter on. These bikes have a very small filter area and the 450 pulls really hard vacuum at the filter. When the most of the filter gets covered and clogged, eventually the weak spot is going to be found and dirt will get pulled through. Twin Air makes sand and coarse dust covers for their filters that work great at stopping a lot of the crap. They even make a specific Beach Race Filter for the YZF's.
36 year old vet rider, oil changed and filter ever 5 hours, air filter every after ride, also make sure dirt don't fall in when changing air filter, I blow it out every time, currently have 110 hours and still runs like new, new clutches at 100 hours along with stem bearings, has been an excellent bike for me. I've only ran the Keefer's recommended maps torque control and exciting.
This is nothing more than failure to properly oil the filter unfortunately. Over the past 20 years, I have rebuilt countless engines from dirt ingestion while using spray on filter oils. I know ill get 500 people that swear they work, but im sure those same 500 people adjust valves every 15 hours. The solution to the problem is good old fashion Bel Ray pour on oil. It is the most effective filter oil at protecting your engine, especially in dry and dusty regions. Living in South Jersey, our summers can be absolutely brutal but sometimes worse than Summer is fall. Bel Ray has never failed me, or any of my customers that ive redirected in the past. Our 2021 yz250f went 115 hours before we sold it, the valves never moved even .001" in those 115 hours, and that was being ridden by a rev happy 14 year old...... Your filter oil is the single most important aspect of protecting your engine, hell that same bike lived on Shell Rotella 15-40 its whole life as well. Dont take the easy road on filter maintenance, it doesnt pay.
My 2023 YZ450 is at 70 hours now. I change the oil in between 3 and 4 hours usually closer to 3. I keep the Air filter clean of course. I will probably catch heck but I use the No Toil red oil, I just kind of drizzle it on every where inside and out then work in until I see a tad of liquid oil show up anywhere firmly squeeze the filter then let it dry a bit. I've never had any dirt or dust get by it. I will probably switch to Bell Ray filter oil when I use up the No Toil. I am a bit nervous about the hours but I never hit the limiter, I need to make it 5 more races and some practice days to get to the summer break then rebuild it. I am a bit nervous about it but I hope to not go over 90 hours.
