Cripes, clip the main wings enough to be legal road width, and put solar panels on it, and it resembles a big proportion of a yearly E Vehicle contest, that , I think, goes up to Darwin.

The aggressive angles resemble the F-117 design. While neither aircraft is winning the local beauty pageant, the stealth functionality is apparent.

Wow, another aircraft I do not remember much about, the F106 Delta Dart. It was one of the first to be flown by computer systems in 1956! 😳

Its primary mission was to intercept Russian high altitude aircraft from dropping nuclear bombs over the US.

The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was a single-seat, single-engine interceptor aircraft that served as the primary all-weather defense for the United States Air Force from the 1960s through the 1980s. It was a derivative of the F-102 Delta Dagger, but with extensive structural changes and a more powerful engine. The F-106 was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2 and had a range of 1,500 miles. It was armed with air-to-air missiles and an air-to-air nuclear missile.

The first time ever saw a Convair delta wing fighter was at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson sometime around 1985. I was honestly shocked when I saw it--I had known about Sabers, Starfighters and Phantoms but had no idea anything like these existed. IMO they are the most Buck Rogers-looking of any US fighter aircraft. I believe the F-102 was the first to incorporate the area-rule "coke-bottle" fuselage design to reduce drag in the transition from subsonic to to supersonic flight. Convair also made a prototype delta-wing seaplane variant called the Sea Dart for the navy but it was never put into production.

I saw a documentary about the Sea Dart years ago. Had the engines above the wing, and it was the one and only seaplane to exceed the speed of sound

Fascinating concept, it sounds like it would float with the wings until it cleared 10MPH and then the skis would deploy. That thing must have been bitch to maintenance.

If you ever find yourself in San Diego, stop by the Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. They have a Sea Dart and an A12 on display right outside the entrance.

It shouldn't be retired yet anyway. There is nothing else with the survivability the A10 has in the close support role.

Warthog works when all significant anti aircraft weaponry has been neutralized. Otherwise aircrews would suffer significant casualties. It’s been stated by those close to the A-10 community.

Definitely a thread that needs to stay towards the top of the board.

That's awesome! I bet you're very proud of your Son.

I must have posted the wrong link. Here's the one of it landing and also a cool one of the U2.

Crazy to think both these AWESOME Aircraft entered service 40 and 69 YEARS ago and they are still getting the job done! 👍

I'm insanely proud of the kid. He's been in a bit over a year and really seems to like it so far.

Back in 2000, I got stranded at Osan AFB in Korea overnight (COD broke down), and got to see a couple of U2 landings. It's such a cool aircraft to watch come in.

The A-10 Warthog's GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm Gatling gun fires at a rate of 3,900 rounds per minute (approximately 65 rounds per second). This high-velocity, 7-barrel cannon is designed for close air support and can destroy armored vehicles with ease. It typically carries around 1,150 to 1,350 rounds, allowing for sustained fire. That's only 17-21 seconds of firing capability, so pull the trigger wisely! 🙂 See pic, and imagine how they can cycle 65 of these bad boys in one second???

And here 's the mighty B-52 loaded for bear.

72 years since its inception and still causing havoc! Dang we are throwing the whole kitchen sink at them. 😲
