Freestone had the ama featured event title pulled i believe, now its at spring a ding. Its all Politics. its real unfortunate, the Millers are great people with a great venue.
is this an MX Sports / DC matter the type of which Cooksey would cover?
Don't know anything specific about Freestone, but Texas tracks/series have been undergoing some upheaval in sanctioning and ownership the past 18 months after being super stable for the last 20 years. Many tracks that were formerly independent have become AMA-sanctioned (I've heard mainly for the insurance). So there's that. And Tony Mosely, a terrific guy that basically ran the Texas Vintage Racing Club (TVRC) series for as long as I can remember, decided to retire from those duties. Even though we're all old guys, TVRC has always commanded pretty significant influence over the entire MX scene around the state. Probably because we're OG. The Johnsons that own Johnsonville MX Farm assumed control of TVRC and have changed it up pretty significantly. Other jungle drums overheard: not everyone is a fan of the changes at Swan after it changed hands. Village Creek had to basically reinvent itself as Metroplex Motocross Park after a lawsuit when it embraced AMA sanctioning. And there have been whispers of some promoter turf wars coming through the grapevine, as well.
Looks like Underground is going to run their own Spring National the same week as Spring A Ding. Stepping all over each other. Can’t believe the small turnouts at Swan either.

From what I gather (we race in Texas ALOT) a few tracks/promoters cannot get along and when they do try to work together, decisions are not made collectively. Hate to see the division, just like politics, you're either on this side or that side. Thought they were going to work it out, but doesn't look that way. I don't know the ins and outs of what started it all. We try to race the best tracks with the biggest gate drops and don't pay attention too much to which side they're on. I just want to see Oklahoma and Texas moto strong.
Freestone's family stamp goes back to 1853 on that property. They aren't going anywhere. Currently, with the 3 biggest track owners (3 Palms, Freestone and Oak Hill) not getting along is only hurting the riders. Every single gate drop is stacked onto each other and its embarrassing, especially bc they're all staples in their district. I wish all Texas business and track owners success, except the Cowboys.
There's a few new tracks jumping in, as well. Notably BillaDilla and Athens MX off the top of my head.
I heard the feud started after Oak Hill changed hands. A lot of people on different sides declaring, "My way or the highway".
It seems like some series' and races had great turnouts post-covid which invited some opportunists looking to capitalize and now we have a split that sucks for the paid participants. Even Jerry Surber understood the greater good.
The NMA/AMA Texas feud only hurts Texas Motocross. I think Freestone had more entries at the first round of the Winter Series than it did for the JS7 National.
Freestone has a driving range for Golf, and a professional competition shooting range...enough said.
This has actually been going on for a very long time. Sometimes they can make a series work, sometimes they can't. Either way, not everyone comes out smiling.
Not here to bag on Jerry, but he was not happy when Terry opened up, and was always trying to run on top of V.C., and these were the days when we had to break up big bike beginners by color on weekday night practices. There was plenty to go around.
Idk what’s going on, but it sucks
We’re driving to Texas tomorrow from Florida to race spring a ding. Would have liked to be able to race two big nationals on one trip, like my kid did 2 years ago when he went.
everyone knew that freestone was going to have a bad turnout, so we didn’t bother going. Luckily we didn’t go, only like 7 kids in the classes. Would be way better racing and 1/7th of the cost racing a local dade city race here at home
Hope they get it figured out for next year though
Freestone is a way better track than oak hill. Shame they lost the national.
I remember when it was the GNC only. To many promoters and to many tracks trying to make a buck. Honestly how many people can afford to take 2-3 weeks off for these races. Man it always felt so cool to ride the GNC at Whitney and be down there Thursday through Sunday.
The best time of year used to be Mosier Valley for a week, then Lake Whitney for a week.
“Texas Two Step”
Freestone and Oak Hill need to get back to this.
If it is a MX Sports event you can be confident the vendetta channel will cover the race. In addition, he will figure out a way to badmouth Roxen and Matthes while covering the event. Like Cooksey or not, you must admit he does a good job of being consistent with his vendettas....

Wasn’t oakhill owner arrested for sexual assault to a minor ? And ppl still let kids go to that place !?! $100 a picture ?
Pretty sure what ever it was involved the previous owner.
The AMA decisions run thru 3 Palms in Houston. If you aren't in the "in club" you aren't getting into the AMA series in Texas. That's why you had 2 different winter series this year.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Ask the folks at Rio Bravo which other promotor in Houston once sued them and tried to take their track...
Meanwhile, further south, a track owner got picked up in a prostitution bust🤣
Hey we have shop owners/promoters doing the same thing in Oklahoma.
Freestone is a great track and facility. Always worth the drive.
Were they the pin or the cushion?
Went yesterday, sad turnout.
The MX Oasis! Everyday had a happy ending . . .
Shame about the federal seizure that track had great potential
Promoters argue? Age old phenomenon. I remember Jerry Surber (TX rep for NMA) and Ron Henrickson getting into it at Rio in ‘76 (?). Jerry thought Ron was stacking the deck in favor of west coast riders (which he was…lol). Shawn Kelley, Vital’s own Humyman, and a few other Texas racers absolutely showed out! 🏁 This was when Myerscough and Ward owned the mini ranks.
Jerry started GNC immediately thereafter. I had the opportunity to do both—with negligible results. 😂 That split really hurt the NMA, as the GNC stadium races were cool and the southern and Midwest dudes seemed to migrate that direction.
Idon’t believe NMA was ever the same, although it continued on for years. RIP to Ron (and Patty, Virginia & Ted). Good times. Sorry for the novel. 🤷♂️
Not the palms of 3 😂😂😂😂😂
Even further south than MX Oasis. That place had great reviews, though.
They never rubbed anyone wrong😎
