America's weight problem

First of all, I don't want to shame anybody dealing with this issue, but holy hell what is happening? A few times recently I have been out at restaurants or bars and every single person in the place is a freaking porker with a huge gut. I'm not saying some of them, or even most of them, but ALL of them.

I'm at a biker-ish kind of bar in Virginia recently and sort of checking out the scenery for any hot girls and holy shit, pretty much EVERY CHICK in the place was huge. It's depressing (it got a little better later on). I'm tired of looking at fat people everywhere I go. Is it the food? Are we all just at that point of not giving a shit anymore? And people seem proud of it, like some fat-ass chick in a half-shirt and yoga pants with their huge gut sticking out, running around with a big grin and pounding Coors Light. What makes them think we need to see that? Is blubber something to celebrate now?

A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. If you are 24 pounds overweight, you have three one-gallon water jugs strapped to your body. If you are 40 pounds overweight, you have five of them. This wreaks absolute havoc on your skeleton, heart etc.

Rant off. This country needs some serious help with this issue.

Life choices.

Go to Walmart grocery store anytime, at least 75% of the people there are fat. Grocery cart loaded with processed garbage food.

Go to Sprouts or Whole Foods anytime, you can't find a fat person anywhere. Minimally processed foods, healthy choices.

Preach it.

Back in my mt bike racing days, I rode one of my bikes everywhere.

And almost always to work.

And on a construction site it was inevitable that I would get the question, why do you do that ??

My reply was always, because I can.

When I wanted to say, because I don't want to end up like you guys. (Living on cigarettes, mt dew, and mcburgers)

Also, one of my training ride routes had me riding behind a row of fast food places.

The smell was of pure grease.

And that's what they're serving.

It has a lot to do with the food available to us. All this processed food is not what our body wants. When I was younger I heard that people on limited income were fat because they were on limited income. I thought that's  load of crap. But, in fact there's truth to that. Cheap shit food which is what you have to buy is really bad for you and you get fat. When I got my cancer diagnosis we made a huge effort to buy better food. And it's way more expensive. It's really hard to eat healthy and spend minimal amount. We have 4 people in our home, wife, son, daughter, myself. Our food budget is roughly $2.5-$3k per month. Couple that with a tag line that I read here on Vital, "you can't outrun a bad diet".

I think of this every time i carry a 40lb bag of kitty litter from the car into the house. How much it hurts my knees and hips. Then you see someone in the 250-300 range and think how the F do they manage.

Also i see allot of health care people that could use a daily dose of treadmill.

Sad

This is true- I eat organic for the most part but it's expensive. It's criminal what the food industry has done. You have to pay premium prices to not get poisoned. I suspect it's also the quantity of food. Face it, you hardly have to move your ass out of a chair to function in modern America. People are lazy and sedentary as shit. And if you are poor on food stamps with no job, you're just going to stagnate.

Butterbean was a good boxer. 400+ lbs. surprisingly fast punches. His jab, packed a punch. He put all that 400lbs behind his punch, and his opponents felt it. 😀

Quantity plays a big part in it, especially if it's large quantities of shit food. After living in Japan for so long, if I eat at Chili's or somewhere similar, I can barely finish half of my meal.

Reese, turn off the news and get out of the house for a bit. You're starting to go off the rails.

Same here in Aus. It’s nuts seeing all the young kids massively overweight.

For me it was convenience. Putting in 12 hour days on a job site. Coming home, eating. Then going straight to sleep after a shower.  That’s never good. It all turns to fat.
Wake up, because I didn’t have time, grab breakfast on my way to work. Eat lunch at a teriyaki joint or, whatever…

Repeat.

I got up to 270. Finally, got fired for calling a coworker a pussy at this company and, upgraded to a way better place.
Fixed schedule, had time to run and, lift weights. Got down to 198-200 lbs. Hit a tree riding and, quit working out for two years. I managed keeping a healthy diet maintaining my weight around 215 while not doing any exercise at home

Breakfast- 2 boiled eggs and a banana

Snack- Smoothie full of veggies and fruit.

Lunch- 8 oz of steak, banana, apple, orange and carrots.

Dinner- Something will rounded with minimal carbs

Cut out all bread, soda, sugar, rice….

Started exercising again three weeks ago and, down to 200.

It is expensive eating clean. Produce and, meat is through the roof. I spend about $300 a week on groceries. That’s without all the bullshit snacks and, everything else. It’s also just the wife and, I….

I guess it just comes down to discipline, portion sizes and, self respect. There’s nothing to be proud of when you look like a slob. I sure as hell wasn’t.

Have you seen pictures of people on the beach in the 70’s? No fat people or maybe 1 or 2. Now it looks like a colony of giant walruses sunning in the sand.

The food industry gets us addicted to sugar too, almost everything has some form of sugar and your body craves sugar.

Takes a lot to ignore those cravings and cut out the sugar. Once your body weans off it, it gets easier, but it is a fight. That god damn ice cream is delicious...

Yup. Just look at pictures of Carlsbad 500cc USGP, with Marty Moates winning the race 🏁🏁🏁.  Almost everyone watching race, all tanned up, skinny. Drinking Beer. Having good time. 🍺🍺🍺. I think the biggest problem, is the gadget I am typing this comment on…..+ Internet.

Supposedly the obesity rate is declining for the first time in a while because of Ozempic and what not.  I know several people who were hefty and are all of sudden skinny.  I mean losing 70 or 80 pounds in less than a year.  Its wild

When and why did women think having a big ass was attractive? Worse is men look at that 40” wide hog ass and think yeah I’d hit that.

It won't change until it becomes socially acceptable to shame fat people in polite conversation. We knew smoking was terrible for health for a while but nobody cared. Rates of smoking didn't really decline until it became normal to judge and shame smokers. It started being seen as a character flaw. At that point there started being a social cost to smoking and that was too much for most people so many quit or never started. When we get there with obesity then things will change. Right now you're a monster if you judge an obese person and we have body positivity garbage. Even worse is obese kids. Their parents have 100% control over what foods are available to them and they let their kids get fat. Straight up child abuse. Should be treated the same way it would be treated if you bought your 5 year old a pack of Marlboro.

What's worse is the amount of overweight people in healthcare.  I work in a hospital and I can't wrap my head around it. Nice example.

Lack of accountability and discipline are the primary issues, and it's societal. Weight is probably the most easily observable measure of this.

I would say that the problem is sitting in front of the tv or computer all day but even people with active jobs that put them on their feet most of the day are chubby (tradesmen, nurses, waiters/waitresses).

I'd say there's 4 main problems, we made corn too easy to grow and now there's cheap corn syrup in everything, fried potatoes everywhere (the type of oil its fried in doesn't matter that much), portion size, and sitting in cars, at the desk, or on the couch too much.

Unironically I think wide-spread smoking had a role in keeping people thinner back in the day. But also unironically GLP-1s can do the same thing, and are better and cheaper for you.

I may be naive, but I think that there are so many factors involved that intertwine that make it extremely difficult to find a single answer.

I’m a pretty large guy, but I think that it’s mostly because of my behaviors. I don’t think that’s true for everyone. I look at my own children and can see, at least anecdotally, the difference that genetics can make. I don’t think that we’ve necessarily seen a huge ‘shift’ in genetics overall, but I do think that the evolution of our diet affects people with slightly different genetics very differently.

My bio kids are both relatively skinny and people would look at them and assume they are ‘fit’, which they are. My adopted children react to the same diet much differently, and have a much more difficult time with their weight.  My youngest daughter nearly got herself into an eating disorder trying to become more like her older sister and suffered some health issues because of it. Now that she’s an adult and mother, she definitely isn’t a size 3 but she is still extremely conscious of the fact that she simply can’t eat the same things as her sister can.  She’s certainly not fat but she became a vegetarian during her teen years and that has probably helped her a lot with her health management.

My oldest son can’t gain weight even if he tries. He’s still barely 150 pounds at 30 years old, 6’2. His younger brother looks at a slice of pizza and it adds pounds instantly. They are just different, that’s for sure.

Man...some of you guys spend a LOT of money on groceries! The wife and I spend about $350-$375/month total for the both of us shopping at Winco, hitting the bulk bins , produce, eggs , the perimeter stuff. The wife is a vegetarian. Me, I stay as far away from sugar as possible.

We NEVER EVER buy donuts or sugary drinks and only rarely will buy a bag of chips. Sorry girl scouts, why dont you sell something healthy?

Every Saturday or Sunday she will make a couple of meals from scratch that will last us the week. She makes stuff out of dry beans, lentils, quinoa, some pasta etc. This past weekends meals were Cincinnati chili and potato soup. Along with that I will eat eggs for breakfast and maybe a green salad for lunch/dinner.

And yes, standing in line at the checkout is an eye opener. Fat FAMILIES putting the most unhealthy stuff on the conveyor belt in front of us. We just shake our heads as they move about like sloths. In my opinion this country is addicted to sugar based off what I see in peoples carts.

26 yrs ago J. Lopez & the media started that . I don’t get it .  Green Bay has monster huge women & there sour attitudes r so bad. Ever make a joke the milk tanker isn’t here to make your milk shake . They go off real crazy.Lol   I pretty much just date Chinese women here. Even at 40 they hv a nice lean body.

I tend to agree with your cigarette observation. If people were a bit nervous, fidgety, they had smoke. Now they open a bag of chips and chain eat.

And yes, I think the internet has made us more sedentary. Having air conditioning and heat keeps us indoors where it is comfortable.

We moved to the beach 19 years ago. On average there is much less obesity here than other places we travel that aren’t on the coast.  Folks stay in shape if they spend most of their free time out in the sun on a beach or in a boat.

There should be a fat tax. Junk food should be outrageously priced to discourage people from buying it. They're a burden to the healthcare system. They consume more of everything. They eat more food. Their clothes are bigger.

I have a lot of older female friends (40s and 50s) and they get salty that the young skinny girls get all the attention. There is one that everyone has been trying to set me up with, but she's probably 45 lbs. overweight. She's huge. So I tell my other friend (who is also fat) that she is too big for me and she said I'm "judging" their bodies. I'm like, sorry, don't expect me to get with someone with the physique of a manatee and no, that does not make me superficial or sexist. I'll take the little 100 lb. girl please.
