It just doesn't surge hard out of corners like the fourfiddy

i think the lap times will be similar but making passes will be hard, one mess up in a corner, will ruin a tricky section (where a 450 will just Braaaap over anything from a standstill), squaring up out of corners will be harder, Whoops? if he dont get a good run onto them, will he be able to build speed through them like a fourfiddy would?

Starts will be neither here nor there IMO, its the rest of the track in a race situation that could be an issue.
Are you saying I have to believe you and your stopwatch and not Zacka`s deep expertise? This will turn all my world upside down.

in all fairness he was saying tiimes may be the same but mistakes may be harder to recover ...But what he is not saying is that races are often won in the corners and that bike ha got to be much more nimble ...remember Reed commenting on how tight he could cut the zuk-...I suspect Shorty will be just fine on that bike- If I remmeber correct they often tune down the 450's to prevent wheel spin etc-

Cubic CC's mean fuck all, it's how you ride it that counts as Tony Cairoli demonstrated all season in the GP's on his 3fifty rocket ship!
exactly rob- the person twisting the throttle is the most important factor!

i agree on all counts. i just made an observation and that was that the 450 definitely looked to hit harder out of corners. Which may become a factor.

on another note if it was the year of the low berms, i cant remember what year it was, the tractability could be an advantage,

Remember, its only bench racing ya'll

I don't think theres any arguing that the 350 is not as fast as the 450... That's just not even possible.

I think that the 350 can have advantages, possibly enough that winning a supercross is realistic, but I think more often than not it's going to be at a disadvantage. Sure, you could put someone like Stewart on it and he'd win, but that doesn't mean the bike is better. I feel bad for Shorty, I really do.

People seem to be in denial about how Alessi went from Outdoor National threat contender last year (dominating even Reed) to a barely top-10 guy on the 350. The bike is terrible. AC doesn't count, comparing his bike to Alessi's is a joke.

Barley top 10? He even won a heat. how many riders won a heat this year?
So you have been into the ktm pit too, can you please tell us the difference between the factory ktm's in europe and the factory ktm's in the us too?

i agree and think that like M.A., A.S. is a better "big bike" rider, thus this may not be the best for him. But what options does he really have...?

Now then, I would like to see R.V. on a 350...

I’m not trying to be a smart ass here but………Uhhhh, didn’t Nagl beat Cairoli that day?!? LOL And didn’t Ramon have the fastest lap of the day as well?!? So now we’re to believe that just because RC or Stewart haven’t ever raced that track that Nagl and Ramon would beat them there too???? Yeah yeah yeah……Cairoli charged from behind; Everts, DeCoster, RC, Stewart and plenty more great champions have had “last TO FIRST” rides.

Tony is an incredible rider and a great champion (for the record I'm a big fan as well), but that just wasn’t the end all race to beat all other incredible races. Awesome? Yes. Legendary? Not hardly.

Apologies for responding to a post that is off topic. By the way, did anyone else notice how slow Cairoli’s bike looked like it was coming out of the corners compared to the 450’s??

Back to the original point of the post, I couldn’t agree with you more on the horsepower thing Rob. This isn’t NHRA people. Regardless of where Short finishes this season (there are just SO many factors besides the bike that go into it), I’d venture to say that between DeCoster and Short they SORT OF know a little bit more about what they’re doing than most of the people on here combined, and they picked the 350 for a reason. Think about it.

Ever ask yourself why a 250 remains so close to a 450 in a mx style start through about 4th gear?

It has more total gear reduction which equals faster acceleration that it would have with 450 overall gearing (think big picture - it's not just chain and sprocket - look in your manual - primary reduction aka crank gear to clutch basket gear - tranny reduction - then gearing reduction - multiply each by the previous to get total torque multiplication)

BUT the 250 can "get away with" more reduction because it revs higher - meaning despite having more reduction it can still maintain a good overall top speed (fast enough for the mx track)

Drag racers have known for years that if they can get their motor to maintain the same power level - but rev higher - they can go faster down the drag strip. The extra revs allow more final gear reduction allowing faster acceleration.

But an interesting note about that - even though their ET has gotten quicker (faster time in 1/4 mile) their top speed will be unchanged.

Peak HP gives you speed (MPH) - but the gear reduction and rev ability of the engine gives you acceleration.

Acceleraton only cares about torque at the wheel at that instant in time.

MX racing (traction aside) is one drag race after another. That's why corner speed is so important - you get a head start on each drag race!

The 350 shares this trait of revving higher than the 450 (although if you listen to the factory 450 kawi and zook they have raised it considerably on those - so maybe not the advantage over the factory bike in that respect)

I think the 350 will be fine except on really long outdoor start straights/starts like millville.

Go check out the 250F times versus 450F times in Supercross. The difference is ~1-2 seconds and highly dependent on the rider. Last year CP was putting up the fastest practice lap times of all riders in a couple of events - on a 250F. A 350F is plenty to compete in supercross - in fact if the suspension settings are right (and the right rider is riding the bike), the 350F could be a silver bullet. I have a YZ250F and a 350SXF right now. I've had 450Fs and 250 smokers. The 350F is a great bike. If Shorty doesn't win, I doubt it will due to the lack of CCs. I'd put more money on the 1) rider (no disrespect to Shorty, I love the guy) 2) suspension. Not -100CCs.

have you ridden a 350? i have, they are great! the ride like super fast 250f rather than a slower 450 (they like to be revved)

i wouldnt say there is any disadvantage riding a 350, nobody can ride a 450 to its full potential anyway
more power doesnt always equal more speed

stewart has never won in europe!

desalle beat him at unadilla, on a borrowed bike!

i would love to see him try and ride at leirop, but it will never happen- the des nations is at lommel in 2012, it will be interesting to see what excuse the american team make for not turning up again (because they know they'd get smoked- like they do every time its held at a proper sand track ie lierop)

Your such an Ass Bag. Stewarts first race back in 6 or 7 monthsafter breaking his nevicular. He hadn't raced Outdoors in over a year and a half either. Im far from a Stewart fan but your comments are rediculously dumb. Go hide under a rock and don't come back out till you have common sence that you can use.

Nope, they will say it is Short AND Alessi that now suck. I don't think the bike needs more work, I just think there is only so much you can do with 100cc less. Short wasn't likely getting any podiums in 2011 SX even on his Honda, so it will be worse on the 350.

People point to Roczen at MXoN, Villopoto at Budds Creek MXdN...you can even point to O'Mara 1986 MXdN. These are instances of very unlikely results. Does O'Mara's performance prove that 125's were at no disadvantage to 500's? Yet, Roczen at MXoN somehow correlates to the 350 not being a disadvantage in the long haul? No, it just means Roczen was on it that day.

No one in the world could beat Cairoli there not even Stewart... they guy is unreal in that stuff.
Everts and RC,

Better grab a napkin homie, you just got served
Er...They don't race anymore - I was referring to current racers ... and AC could run with both of them there in their prime I believe... those three at Leirop would be the the best motocross race ever!

Maybe if you had said Herlings though.... that guy is amazing in sand.

i would love to see him try and ride at leirop, but it will never happen- the des nations is at lommel in 2012, it will be interesting to see what excuse the american team make for not turning up again (because they know they'd get smoked- like they do every time its held at a proper sand track ie lierop)

Im far from a Stewart fan but your comments are rediculously dumb. Go hide under a rock and don't come back out till you have common sence that you can use.
Ok... how could Stewart have beaten AC at Leirop last year if he couldnt beat Desalle at Unadilla... AC would beat Stewart at Leirop.

Maybe James could run with him on raw speed if he raced outdoors again but I don't know if he could stay up for the full weekends racing to beat AC at a GP in Leirop.

I dont care for James one bit. But he would dominate your riders in Europe on whatever track you put them on.

We all seen what a well prepped Stewart did to the almighty "Sand Master" here in The States.
Add another several inches of deep sand and Stewart's lead might not been as big,but I honestly believe he would have won. Wink

James can haul the mail in the sand,he is from Florida.
I honestly believe a well prepped Stewart would give AC a run for his money at Leirop,Lommel or on the frigging the moon for that matter.
Dungey & RV would also give him trouble as both have done in the past. Wink

And before one of you Euros who have never even been to Southwick or even ridden there, pull out your ass an ignorant comment like
"SouthWick isnt real sand".
Marc even stated himself that he was surprised at how sandy the place was.
