I found myself in the local ER two days before Christmas with the most crippling pain in the right side of my chest and back. The DR's ruled out heart attack and all that good stuff, thank God. But, after the CT scan it was determined I have a few gallbladder stones that are wreaking havoc anytime I eat something good aka beer, pizza, tacos, etc. Since it's not infected I don't meet with the surgeon until mid-January. Next week I go for a more detailed scan to get a fine detail of what's going on inside there. Has anyone had their gallbladder removed? How is recovery? I've been eating bland, unseasoned, and high fiber foods to keep the gallbladder happy. That pain was ridiculous and I don't want to go through that again.

My 7 year old had hers removed the 19th. Same thing. Shes been saying her chest hurts for a long time. More specifically her heart. We’ve done a bunch of test with all of them coming back negative. Doctors chalked it up to indigestion. Long story short but we found ourselves in the ER 2 weeks ago. They were going to ultrasound her spleen and kidneys. I asked to do full abdomen (gall bladder specifically) bam. Gall stones. Out the next day. She says instant relief.
I have a buddy, early 50s, at work that just came back from his, had it removed a couple days after Thanksgiving. He had laparoscopic, said he felt "uncomfortable" for 7-10 days ost-op, pain was controllable with Tylenol/Advil. He says he also didn't feel like he was able to do strenuous activity for 3 weeks or so. He also stated he made sure to test the gallbladder being gone with plenty of whiskey over Xmas, says he's good to go.
I’m glad the kiddo is feeling much better!
It’ll be hard to not be active for that long. I too will test it with whiskey. 😂

Fuckin hell, 7 years old and had to get a gallbladder removed? Sorry to hear that and glad to hear she's good.
As a parent, anytime your kid's in pain I don't know who hurts more the kid or the parent.

Wife had it done , No problems other then her gut pumped full of CO2 and it takes time in the Hospitol to get rid of it ( like diving and the bends )
The Gall bladder is a grese trap ?
Yeah it sucked for sure. Her’s is linked to my blood disorder. Long story on that but they were wanting to take her spleen and gall bladder at the same time. We opted for just the gall bladder for now but the spleen will have to come out at a later time (half my family has no spleen from blood disorder).
Wife had her gall bladder removed as well almost 10 years ago. Greasy food messes her up pretty bad. This whole experience with my daughter has changed our household diet completely.
Had my spleen removed laparoscopically, the gas pain in my shoulders was fuckin unreal. That was way worse than the pain from the spleen being removed. All that gas has to go somewhere to get out, might be TMI, but I did queef hahahahaha the fuckin weirdest feeling. Don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in a while.
At least you can laugh about it
Down , at least you know what your in for now....sorry !
That's probably from having foley catheter during surgery, drains urine but also lets air into bladder where there's usually none. See it often on CT scans after surgery. Wouldn't be from the laprascopic gas unless something went very wrong. The pain to back of shoulder is classic referred pain from gallbladder or irritation to that area under diaphragm. Could be from air but could also be from the procedure itself.
Most people do fine with getting gallbladder out, back to normal in couple of weeks. Might have loose greasy shits the rest of your life though. If you have known gallstones and have already been symptomatic with them that's going to be enough for surgeon to take it out if you want it done. If your pain is totally resolved between episodes the additional imaging doesn't serve much purpose.
Ahh that makes sense. That was almost 20 years ago. Forgot I woke up with a foley. That sucked.
For sure, thanks.
Sorry brother, didn’t mean to hijack your post. Best of luck with surgery and hopefully a speedy recovery 🤙
Had mine out, the gas pain in the shoulder was the worst part. I ran a 10k two weeks after.
Gas pain in the shoulder?
No worries!
I had mine removed and several people I know has as well. Mine hurt on back between the shoulder blades. I remember telling my Mom, that if I had crashed earlier in the week I would have thought I broke my back or ribs something.
After the procedure I could shit through a screen door for about 2 years at very random times, several times a day. I knew where every decent bathroom was between home and where I was. I learned to carry spare clothes in my truck. I once shit myself in an Applebees from a fart that got away. I was lucky to leave without embarrassment but I was 30 miles from home. That really sucked.
It took like 2 years but just like snap your fingers all that ended and I now have about the most normal constitution a person could have. Just about everyone I know that's had it done has similar experience. NOW! you know what you are in for.

I've heard similar things too. I guess I'll have my Dude Wipes ready at all times. 😂
Wife had it done a few years ago, recovery wasn't too bad and she's pretty normal now although she knows which foods don't agree with her post-op.
Soldier, even-though this will have unpleasant temporary side effects…well…
As someone that’s had a few procedures as of late, I can tell you this: do all the necessary prep and keep yourself in shape and mobile…as much as possible and…
“Soldier, just lean into it and get it done!” 🤣
You’ve got this 💪🏼🇺🇸
Says the guy that didn't get the shits from his procedure 🤣🤣🤣
But in all seriousness, sometimes we have to go through shit to get to the good times.
TM
Quite the opposite; yet, not really any less…”shitty”?
Not being able to take a shit for several days jus’ ain’t cool! 🤣
Now, due to going thru the entire process 3 times in 8 months? I did get it dialed in: no Oxy & only as much Tramadol as needed for good sleep…and lots of Lax post surgery…
It’s a Shitty Deal😎
I can save a life and do some wild things in the ER but the most gratitude I ever get is from reducing a nursemaid's elbow or giving an enema and some drugs to someone who can't shit and cleaning them out.
I have zero to add to a gallbladder discussion. Just driving by to say good luck with your surgery . Hoping all goes well.💯
My mom had hers out about a year ago and it went smooth. My old neighbor had hers out. She went to the hospital at 7am and was home by noon and had a smooth recovery. Both women are in their 70's and still active so it must not be too bad of recovery.
I had mine removed in the mid 90s, right when Lay's was changing their oil that they made their potato chips with to something like olean. It was rough, and while it became a serious game of not eating anything unless you were within sprinting distance to a bathroom, potato chips were like playing russian roulette. You knew that you were going to have an explosion, but you weren't quite sure how quickly it was going to happen.
I still have some 'trigger' foods that want to vacate rather quickly. There are certain restaurants that must use a certain kind of cooking oil that just doesn't flow in me very well (or flows too well!). I can't eat breakfast at a Denny's anymore unless I account for a 15 minute bathroom break right after I am finished eating. And if I feel like I need to go, I no longer think 'I can hold it til the next highway exit'. At the first rumble, I am crossing traffic if I need to in order to get to the nearest bathroom.
This seems to be a reoccurring issue with no gallbladder. Maybe I'll just accept the crippling pain? 😂
My doctor said that most of the women who he had treated for gallstones rated the pain as very close to, and maybe worse than childbirth, but worse in that it just randomly occurred.
The other women hadn’t had children yet…….
Ah, the surgery, the procedure isn't nothing. In fact it will be the best, most relaxing sleep you've had all year. After that you will feel like a million bucks for a day or so. I was kinda unattended after recovery. I woke up, was high on life, scored a date with a nurse (stage 5 crazy nurse). I somehow got out of the hospital. Went for a walk in town. I don't live in town. Made my way into a restaurant to get a drink of water. Ran into an ex and got a BJ in the bathroom. Found my phone. Called my uncle to pick me up. I guess everyone was looking for me. Went home and did about 12 hours of office work in 4 hours. Watched 20 minutes of a movie before falling asleep for 10 hours or so. It was a great day. But the pain is real. Mine had been hurting for a while, but finally one of the stones fell down the funnel and clogged the tube. Mine was kind of an immediate procedure, which is why I was kind of alone after recovery.
I'm convinced that if you did an ultrasound on just about anybody they would have gallstones. If they are bothering you, well, that's a whole different ball game than just having stones.
