Your statement was that you did not need religion to show you what is morally right and wrong. So there’s some objective morality that you know to follow. My point is that morality in the western world has been developed over centuries and has its foundations in Christianity. You probably wouldn’t have the same moral intuition if you were born in a hut somewhere in sub Saharan Africa. Your morality code didn’t just divine itself to coincide with popular Christianity, but was informed by it.

And I never set out to prove god to you. I didn’t even say you should be Christian. I just took issue with your claim that you can calibrate your moral compass in a vacuum devoid of religion.

I don’t take issue with the moral teachings of religion.  I take issue with the need of those religions to try and spread and the killing in the name of said religion (whatever it may be). If your belief system is so valuable, people would move towards it naturally.

And I also take issue with the selective application of its principles.

What you're describing is war. I'm talking about terrorism against non combatants. That's not subjective and yes it's quite easy to say those two things are very different things. You're being obtuse on this because you know the Abrahamic religions you mention are not the same on this issue.

Define "non combatants" because they grow up being taught to hate the "Jews", that they need to kill the "Jews" if they have opportunity, and if they have nothing more than rocks to throw as a child, that's what they "need" to do. So while they may not be wearing a uniform,  please explain to us where the line is before you calculate the percentage of who got killed.

Hate takes a backseat to survival when it’s a near continuous struggle to keep your family safe and fed. Gaza was one of the most destitute urban areas in EMEA prior to the recent conflicts. Israel’s security policies understandably focus on minimizing threats but at the same time increase animosity.

The IDF’s response to recent events pushed the limits of acceptability of western nations.  While it’s convenient to label every Gaza inhabitant as a combatant, it’s impossible to know what percentage actually care enough to pick up arms.  So we assume they all hate Israel and give the IDF indirect support to use force.  It’s a decision that weighs heavily on the people asked to carry out those assignments. We’re all fortunate to not have that burden.

The bombings will continue until your love for Israel improves.

The bombings will continue until your love for Russia improves.

The terrorism will continue until your love for Islam improves.

The meddling will continue until your love for the USA improves.

The exploitation will continue until your love for China improves.

Yup…and…you want some realism…?

Because of this threat…or threats like this, we have “people on over-watch” at events like The Super Bowl and other big public events. Go look at the shooters on HRT to get a feel for what I’m talking about. I’ve seen, with my own eyes, a sheriffs dept over-watch team at a high school graduation.

I’m thinking that folks in these other countries will be learning to do the same. It’s sad that it’s come to this…

But, this is the world we live in.

There is no denying Hamas created abhorrent programs aimed at violence against Jews. That group’s leadership is willing to sacrifice its own people in an effort to increase anti-Israeli sentiment globally. But these tactics are far from having universal acceptance.

We could post videos of nazis supporting Trump. Does that mean every Trump supporter is a nazi?  Absolutely not, but if I only release content supporting that narrative, it’s easy to convince those who already dislike Trump.

Has anyone made a big deal about the man who disarmed one of the murderers being a Muslim originally from Syria, now an Australian citizen? Do we assign the actions of the murderers to all Muslims, but not the actions of Ahmed al-Ahmed?

One of the worst analogies of the day. When the whole of the group is one way and you have outliers that don't support the violence, and then you want to make an analogy using the outlier group. Hmmm

It's now being reported that the police didn't engage for approx. 20 minutes while all this happened. They hid while letting the shooting continue. What does that say about the police that are supposed to protect the public? The police station was within eyesight of the mass slaughter. This is similar to the Uvalde school slaughter where 19 were slaughtered. Regardless of the shooters motives, in the moment, the police need to do a better job. Sort it out after.

What's the old saying? If the islamists put down their weapons there would be peace. If the Jews put down their weapons they'd be exterminated.

I’m not placing blame on any one participant more than any other. I’m not defending or endorsing anyone. I’m just trying to make an argument that no religion is morally superior or morally justified in killing in the name of their god.

To say so nonchalantly “it’s different” is extremely subjective and definitely ridiculous. From the Palestinian perspective they are freedom fighters. Fighting for their culture and their right to exist in their own country.

If Hamas came to your state or town and tried to take it over would you not resist and fight back with everything you had?

I’m only trying to argue that claiming a monopoly on god and killing to validate that monopoly is a shocking and astonishingly idiotic exercise.

Hey man ya know I’m not questioning the authenticity of anyone’s faith here, I’m just trying to say that judging others based on theirs is silly.

All religions have killed and kill in the name of god. It’s not unique to any one religion.

Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all worship the same god. They only differ in how they choose to worship. It’s like 3 farmers farming 3 different varieties of grapes and killing eachother over whose variety is best, rather than rejoicing in the brotherhood of being grape farmers.

Arguing with people who have chosen to attach their identities to a specific belief system is always going to be tough. They have to believe they are right and you are wrong because even considering that you are correct might lead them into an existential crisis. When one believes their existence is threatened they tend to react with fear and resort to violence. A universal response among any individual who attaches their identity to an ideology.

I know I haven’t won any popularity points over the course of our exchange but I’ve done my best to answer questions you’ve asked in order to defend my position.  So answer this one for me? - if Hamas came to your state and your town and tried to enact Islamic law and remove you from your ancestral home and debase your culture and religion, how would you react?.. you don’t even have to answer because I know you would fight until to the death like any man with a spine would do.

Absolutely would fight back.

What I would not do is head to the local beach and start shooting at kids who have nothing to do with it or fly a plane into a building full of people who have nothing to do with it or kill a bunch of magazine publishers because they published Jesus cartoons that I didn't like or go rape and kill a bunch of people at a music festival or drive a truck down bourbon street or on and on and on.....

You have accepted a false equivalency that only works if you speak in broad generalities over hundreds of years but is completely unsupported by what is actually happening now.

Has anyone made a big deal about the man who disarmed one of the murderers being a Muslim originally from Syria, now an Australian citizen? Do we assign the actions of the murderers to all Muslims, but not the actions of Ahmed al-Ahmed?

Unfortunately yes, to answer the hard question. Truth be told most Muslims come from a 3rd world country that is not even close to being developed enough to recognize our laws and assimilate. You can see it across Europe, look at each country and then take a nice look at Poland. Easy to see the difference.

Now to explain this a bit further. It isn’t hate that drives this. In fact, I wish it was the opposite. But I happen to fancy my country and do not see a benefit for them to come here.

Australia is a perfect example, as a few apples spoil the bunch. I commend the gentleman who saved many lives and was shot himself in an act of pure bravery and selflessness. But a shutout would prevent this entirely. Again use Poland as example.

Tough question no doubt.

You have accepted a false equivalency that only works if you speak in broad generalities over hundreds of years but is completely unsupported by what is actually happening now.

So really the crux of our disagreement is whether Israel is making war on Palestine or committing genocide against it. Genocide I guess would constitute an act of terrorism right?

Now I personally don’t give a shit what governments of other countries, or organizations, or international bodies say, as they hold no legitimacy in my eyes. But not for nothing dude you do realize that the majority of the world believe Israel is committing genocide and crimes against humanity? What they’re doing in Palestine meets all the criteria of genocide. So I guess put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Either way I draw no distinction between war and terrorism. It’s a completely arbitrary distinction made by men and institutions I have no respect for. When your life is on the line you use whatever means available. Right and wrong means very little in matters of life or death. Desperate people do desperate things and all wars are wars fought for territory and resources.
Israel didn’t even exist 100 years ago. All the territory they have, they have because they fought and killed and died in the name of god for it.
I’m not here to judge right or wrong, just pointing out the futility of such actions.

My personal opinion on Israel is it's pretty hard for me to know one way or the other because the source more or less determines the reporting. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle and I'm sure they're not without fault in some cases. What I do know is that if they had the same disregard for innocent life as the other side does, the other side would no longer exist. At all. Israel could have wiped them off the map by the end of October 8th if they wanted to. If they wanted to commit genocide it would have taken them a long weekend to do it. So I think that's mostly hyperbole and not at all what Israel's goal is.

Even if it was, I'm still not sure how that justifies shooting up a beach in Australia or driving a truck down bourbon st.

Off to update the old resume. I’ll make assistant salad bar technician in no time!

Just remember, the salad fork is the little fork and you'll get promoted in no time. 🤣

Has anyone made a big deal about the man who disarmed one of the murderers being a Muslim originally from Syria, now an Australian citizen? Do we assign the actions of the murderers to all Muslims, but not the actions of Ahmed al-Ahmed?

Apples to bulldozers. Islam didn't make al Ahmed run to the sound of the guns, being a good person did. But Islam 100% made the shooters do what they did...

I'm not Jewish but, this has been a thing since I can remember in 1972 at the Olympics. The targeting of non-military civilians from pure hate has to stop! Israel did not attack "Palestine", if those guys would have just slept in and had a nice breakfast all their shit would still be standing.

What hasn't been said, and now will be: had there been a couple of rednecks with 1911s there, maybe a few more people could celebrate Hanukkah today.

If that happened here, and I had the same visual as the video. Dead  player...

But that's movie shit huh?

Try it.

Reported by who?

the entire attack lasted about 7 minutes, and police were returning fire within about the 4 minute mark.

Sully will be covering these issues for me.

Or maybe Australia would have firearm homicides rates that are even in the ballpark of the US. We have more guns than people yet those same people are killed at a 10X rate than Aussies.

The 1911 option looks good on paper, but in practice, it backfires mightily.

So...Your saying no one should be able to defend themselves. On paper it's safer.

Firearm homicides rates in Australia have been stable around 0.1 per 100,000 people, while it's trending up in the US, with recent years over 4 per 100,000 people, that's 40x the rate of Australia.
