Note: There are some FUGLY postures/images in here of knees…mostly post-surgery…that some may not want to see….

Over the last 45 years, I’ve broken A LOT of stuff…A LOT of “me”…too many bones, tendons, ligaments and important soft tissues…and it started to take a toll on me ESPECIALLY on my knees and my mobility.

It all came down to this: I got a knee replacement today. And it is all because of Moto. Therefore, I’m thinking…

This is “Moto”?

For about 5 years, I’ve been getting slowed down by pain and the lack of mobility. My knees, especially my left, we’re always painful and heavy feeling…bogged down like I was dragging them thru life whenever I was attempting to walk or stand for more than a few minutes.

A few years back, MC sent me a text from his hospital bed with his “new knee” straight outta surgery and he was already stoked! He had this giant post-surgical melon of a knee…that immediately better motion than his  worn out“stock parts” 🤣

Since then, on a few occasions, he’s asked me “Why haven’t you done your knees, yet?” Ya know, I really didn’t have an answer other than the simple fact that I had a stupid mindset of not wanting to “Take the time to do it.”

Time off from racing…racing that was already being compromised by my knees.

Time off from work…that’s total bs for me. I can work from anywhere on virtually any device…so, yup, that’s a non-issue. Besides, I’ll be able to be back in the office in a matter of days.

The cost: all in and including PT & whatever devices I might have to buy (so far they’ve all been included other than the “Ice Machine” my wife got…’cause she’s jus’ awesome)…all deductibles are gonna add up up to around $7-8K on a $120K+ spend. Also, if I get my other knee done by year’s end…it’ll be cheaper since I’ve paid near the annual limit on my ankle and knee...which is nice.

Look, I know we all have different insurance issues and some may pay less (like the Medicare crowd) and some may pay more,..and, yes, there are some that don’t have coverage or their coverage makes it too damn hard to get your knees covered.

Here’s my message to all of you: if you’ve got pain…something holding you back…something you think might be getting “bad” or “worse”…

Go find answers.
Go get whatever help and assistance you can. Go and take the time to get healthy.

Because, you’re worth it.

Good Morning…you old-school off-road Bad Ass!

Yesterday, I walked at a level that felt “Damn Near Normal” for the 1st time in a long time. I’m realizing just how bad my left knee was and how my right knee, which the doc says,”That one isn’t much better!”…but, it hurts a helluva lot less than my left did…still, it’s gotta go…on December 18th.

Hope you’re doing well and let a brother know if you ever wanna go down to Baja and hang. We’re the Pro Moto 60 Champs again. We do it careful and smart. Hell, we have to. We’re The Old Guys and we emphasize that…

Before you can win, you have to FINISH! (Which I think you 1st told me at Clear Creek…at a Qualifier I think…?)

Say “Hi!” to my home beaches and mountains for me, please.

Be well and stay stoked.

Manny

Good news today, y’all. No evidence remains of the infection that was cleaned out last week.  Stitches come out 1-December, full bore physical therapy resumes 2-December.  I’ll be back to riding gravel, paddling outrigger canoe, cruising around on an old CB550, and all the other important stuff by 1-January.  With a knee better than it’s been in 7 years since it was replaced. Be positive and work the process, Manny.

Before the surgery to clean the infection:

Quick story, I worked with an Electrician and he was dating a vet student, she was about to graduate.

Horse kicked her in the knee compound fracture and destroyed it. . . time for tkr. . .

Got infection in it. . . .couldnt get it cleaned up regardless what they did. . . .

The took the implant out and just put a placeholder where the implant would be and pumped her with antibiotics.

Slowly the infection went away, and she finally got the new hardware in and started rehab.

She was bedridden for a long time, and her muscles had atrophied.  It was a tough thing to come out of.

BTW, she was an intern at the time for Oklahoma State Uni...Go Pokes!!!

They paid for it all. . . . .

Thats what happened to my mom. Had hardware replaced 3 times then removed everything with a non moving blocker in there for 120 days with IV antibiotics daily.. all while she was like 78 years old and 105 pounds and made it through.

1 week in now, got the wound vac removed and a couple PT visits in.  Pain comes and goes…. This morning was high pain and really stiff, now mild pain and better.  Such a roller coaster ride these knee replacements are.  My surgeon uses internal dissolving stitches which I like.  Steri-strips will last about 10 days.

Went for my 1st eMTB ride on Sunday (5 weeks & 3 days out).

Then went for a fairly legit ride with Sumdood, yesterday in the hills of San Clemente (5 weeks & 5 days out).

No foot dabbing. No twisting or torquing my knee “off-axis”…I’m being pretty damn careful and focusing on cadence and heart-rate…just good solid pumping the pedals and even some decent climbs. Got my HR up to 172…so…we’re slowly getin’…

Good luck tomorrow Kylemenz1 !  Check back in when you get back from LaLa Land. Hope it goes smooth.  I just scrolled through the last couple pages again, knee replacement surgeons must love old MX'rs, talk about your job security... Best of luck to everyone posting in this thread.

Manny watching you ride up the hills was inspiring !  Watching you climb in and out of the truck bed ?  Dude.... you were making me nervous not gonna lie 😄

Ah Ha - the Blue Armadillo and The Coachroach!

I don't really know why I have very, very little pain from Recos and TKR. I do think it's just that I've had so many Ops, from my early teens onwards that I'm used to it  - constant pain - and that's Not me claiming to be Hard Man, in Any way.

I get various theories thrown at me , often centering on me being a Ranga - Bow Down Before Me, you Non Rangas! - as many say we've got a far higher pain threshold than you other, lower beings........🤪

But then. some say we Rangas feel more pain than you other, lowly beings.... 😁

However, one reco, decades ago, had me wake  up, in So Much Pain. I battered the head board to pieces with my fists.

And, I sure as Hell SCREAMED and Bellowed when some idiot set a 'Knee Bending Machine to a large arc, after yet another reco, which also ripped the new ACL out of the Femoral Plateau....

As for infections - I've been pretty been lucky. But, after one reco, when I Stupidly went to a mates farm in Orange only 4 days after the Op, to help him prior to his Stone Fruit Harvest and got on his tractor to mow / clear between his Peach Tree rows, I woke up in the middle of the night, feeling a 'pulsing' in my knee, to then turn on the lights, and seeing Puss and Blood, pumping  - Not Oozing - out of the wound. And I can tell you, when the Doctors at Orange Base Hospital, opened up the wound, and started to shove various 'tools' into my knee, I Really started Squawking! All of that, I Really felt The Pain!

give yourself plenty of time to be comfortable and in strength building mode with no complications. Then you can decide if you like the prosthesis and be familiar with recovery milestones. If you decide to go with same prosthesis and medical team, you'll have an idea of what to expect on the 2nd one. Good Luck!

Manfred, hope all is going good w/ your knee, like I said, 1st 3 weeks are a biatch and you should be on cruise control by now, still a little tender but should be a few Tylenol a day.  Pumped to be watching Dakar for more reason that just RB, Preston adds another dimension for me, be pulling hard for him, all the best holidays!!

Well.  Successful surgery!! Honestly not as much pain as I thought there might have been. Although I think I’m currently on every pain pill, muscle relaxer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-nausea medication there is. I feel like I’ve had about the same discomfort in this knee after doing a bunch of activities in the past as I did last night.

They used the Mako Robotics system on me yesterday. It’s complete sorcery!  Here’s a video of the process (not me) if anyone’s interested to see how it’s done.

You’ve likely still got some channel blockers helping you out…. I hope it stays mild, but just a fair warning, when it all wakes up, you might very well be glad you have those pills to pop.

I will eventually have to have a TKR as well and I am questioning myself for watching it.  LOL

100% agree…thought I was getting mine done in November…. Ortho said he doesn’t think I”m ready…wanted to try some PT first…. Ok, I”m in no big hurry to get another knee operation…….after 8 PT visits and working hard on my own, lots of Mtn. & road cycling and continuing to ride a few times a week…..my knee does feel better, never going to not hurt with bone on bone and ACL gone but it’s acceptable for now….but TKR coming….I would rather not see the procedure….just put me under….

maybe I'm the odd one here, but for me knowing about and understanding the procedure in advance makes the surgery day less stressful. Takes away the fear of the unknown that is inevitable once you end up in pre-surgery room in a gown getting poked and prodded and all kinds of questions when you've been fasting for 24hrs and lacking sleep. Nurses and Anesthesia Drs seem to appreciate you having an awareness of what's going on.

3 weeks to the day after #2 and this one is wildly different from the last one and this one was the more complex surgery since I had “hardware removal” as part of the procedure.  Simply, so much farther along at this point than the first one.

We’ll be here to share the laughs and the “yup, been there, done that” stories.

Having 2 knees in recovery does slow a dude down a bit! 🤣

But, it’s amazing how the mechanical motion of my walking is soooooo much better.
