Ricky Carmichael not only has the most motocross wins of all time, he's also got the most holeshots by a healthy margin!

I've scoured through YouTube videos, CycleNews articles, and RacerX articles to compile the holeshot winners of nearly every 450 MX moto since 1974! Are there any surprises with these lists?holeshot leaders top ten.png?VersionId=2ao19apXj8yPBYiiTSm1Bb6Uq2Pcholeshot rate top ten.png?VersionId=bSdb6SqANdXEoqKefQtholeshot facts

This is surprising, he always got good starts but I didn’t know he had that many holeshots

Great post

So... The Lawrence brothers account for a 70% holeshot rate.... Everyone else has some serious work to do lol

Interesting, thanks for posting!

I would love to see the same stats for MXGP.

Funny you say that because even while I was noting them all down, it didn’t really register to me how many he had. I thought it would be Emig or Windham once I uploaded it all

Making it more impressive is that for half of his 250/450 career he was underpowered on a 250 two stroke. Elite

Love to see Jeff Ward in the holeshot percentage list, 4 decades later

Does the AMA keep records on this, or did someone do some serious digging in the Cycle News archives? Either way, cool stat.

Equally surprising to not see Donnie Hansen in the top 10 on the All Time list.

I remember Emig in '96 like it was yesterday.

Unfortunately Donnies career was cut short due to injury, Second only to Jett in % is  impressive.

I did a lot of digging. Cycle News for a lot of it pre 2000s and then crosschecked with videos of the races on YouTube (if they were on there) if Cycle News was a bit vague. Racerx sponsored the holeshot line in '07 and '06 I believe, so those were the easiest years to do because they had a list and screenshots of the holeshot line at every race.

Y'know, never really thought of John Dowd as a great starter but I guess with a career as long as his that's only like one every couple of years, the reverse of Hansen. Persistence pays off I guess!😁

He benefitted big time from that KTM 520 in the early 2000s! He had 13 of his 25 career holeshots in 2001 and 2002, including the most (8) during the 2001 season.

These "stat threads" are always fun to read.

Nice. Yeah, Cycle News is a treasure trove of data. I'm currently 3.5 years into a 5 year project to archive as much race data from it as I can, but it can be incredibly frustrating sometimes. Like, it'll describe a battle for 3rd in a heat race, then tell me who got 5th without giving a clear answer as to who won the battle for 3rd.

I feel your pain! I've been doing that myself and once you leave the 1990's it's the wild west trying to note down consistent heat/lcq results

If you cherry pick a couple years Andrew Short would probably end up high in the order. what was it, 2010-2011? Seems like he holeshot half the motos on the factory Honda.
