I wrote this thinking of Tyler! Didn't know he was the King for Just Short though lol.
I think grates are not great, it grates on me how much the grates detract from real moto.
So in summary it would be great to get rid of the grates. Don't start me on holeshot devices.
NO!
Holeshots are another thing I'm working on backdating this winter but as of right now, I have them to 2013.
Premier Class SX has seen the holeshot winner win the main 69 times (not including Triple Crown mains). Tomac has done it the most with 15.
Lites SX 62 times with Marvin Musquin doing so the most with 7.
I only have the last two years of holeshots for MX at the moment.

I started building this DB out over two years ago now in SQL and it's been a mix of scraping results, hand entry, parsing through PDFs, and combing through CycleNews archives. It's been quite the grind but I love it. Every time I think I'm content, I find or think of more stuff out there I can add. It's also led me to creating the smxmuse brand on social media and building the trivia game on my site.
Only four riders have ever won the LCQ and Main in the same night in the Premier Class: Ryan Villopoto, Eli Tomac, Nathan Ramsey, and Jeremy McGrath. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't happened more often especially in the era with no semis in the qualifying process.
It's happened eleven times in the Lites class and Ernesto Fonseca and Nate Thrasher are the only two that have done so twice.
I appreciate it! I might have to take you up on that some day! Stats and data are definitely my wheelhouse these days.
Do you have any pics of Eli and Chase on their new rides?
Do you have data about how many times a rider is lapped in the same race?
Would like to see the plot of how many times lapped versus qualifying position. Really looking to see the riders lapped 2 and 3 times and how predictable that is before the gate drops. The longer speedway tracks will be noticeably different.
Looking at 450 SX top 10 riders, what is the change in racer finishing positions for the first season on a new team compared to the prior season?
Do team changes generally help, hurt, or no effect?
Does moving from or to a certain brand seem to have an effect?
Do you know how many qualifying appearances Nagy as had in getting into those 4 mains?
I thought Dungey did it too. The night his rear shock just died on the starting gate of the heat? Can't remember place or year, but I'm certain he did it too.
You are right, he made it out of the LCQ that night but got second place in it. I misread the original question. I pulled LCQ winners/main winners rather than LCQ qualifiers/main winners
He's appeared in 174 qualifiers
Harmon?
I should really learn to read through a string before replying...
I bricked on Wennerstrom, I should have known. Both are "Locals".
Wennerstrom's dad pulled the "Do you know who I am?" on me one night. I told him that I didn't care who he was, what matters is who I am because I'm the one enforcing the rules.
He said he was about to kick my ass, and that's when I asked him how many of these 7 flags would he liked shoved up his ass.
He left the flagstand and went and found the owner. The owner had the uncanny ability to tell you to go to hell, and make you enjoy the trip. He evidently pointed at me and said: "That guy is running this place, I just write checks, and make sure my team are taken care of".
I love these questions too. I will definitely try and do a deep dive on it. For now I'll hand pick a few.
Just looking at SX:
Eli Tomac's last year on Honda (2015) - 5.24 avg main finish
Eli Tomac's first year on Kawasaki (2016) - 5.00 avg main finish
Chase Sexton's last year on Honda (2023) - 2.76 avg main finish (Championship)
Chase Sexton's first year on KTM (2024) - 5.06 avg main finish
Cooper Webb's last year on Yamaha (2018) - 9.15 avg main finish
Cooper Webb's first year on KTM (2019) - 2.88 avg main finish (Championship)
Ryan Dungey's last year on Suzuki (2011) - 3.82 avg main finish
Ryan Dungey's first year on KTM (2012) - 2.50 avg main finish
Cheyenne Harmon has 104 total SX qual appearances and 9 main event starts
Nicely done.
