I can't imagine these athletes will keep doing this much longer. I thought 2 riders died while I was watching TV yesterday. I get progression, but you potentially lost 2 riders in 1 event for progression. If this is the new standard, then the sport won't last.

Brutal, don't even know what to say. I can't imagine how their family feels right now. And to the people that say "they knew the risks" No, no they didn't. Nobody knows what it's like to be dead. You can close your eyes but you still don't know what it's like to be blind. It's always a sad day when we lose athletes.

To be clear, the riders survived, but their outlook is unknown at the moment. Both are alert and talking is all I have heard.

Both guys were airlifted to the hospital. Both are alert and conscious.

I attended last year.  Watching this in person really brings the risk level to a better understanding .   Wishing the best for the fallen riders.  These guys are on a different level

Saw an update this morning Emil had a dislocated hip, which good god that must have sucked laying on the cliff for so long. It's back in now and he's doing well.

Nothing about Adolf, which as always is very worrying.

As for the course, it seemed short to me this year, but more intense. More exposure it seemed like.

How stupid are you really? They DID know the risk. They have eyes. They can see the terrain and understand it. They've been riding and doing this for years, decades. You are riding a jagged peak and jumping down off the cliff, while attempting a double backflip..a DOUBLE backflip... You most certainly understand death is a possibility here. Same with moto. You KNOW something can go bad without it being 100% your fault and dying from the outcome.

I respect these riders for going into that arena knowing what's on the line and willing to pay that price. Yes it is insane to watch and may not be for some, but the big risks are apart of it. Freeride MTB is inherently dangerous. So is racing dirt bikes, drag racing, isle of man, Football, Hockey, UFC, etc. etc... Without the risk we don't have the pinnacle of many sports being what it is. These guys are professionals and they've made it this far by threading the needle with elite skill. They aren't being invited to that event without the credentials to back it up. This year at Rampage was heavy, without a doubt, but Adolf Silva has been on a quest to do a double backflip drop for years now. A maneuver that all the other elite riders shake there head at. His nickname is "Loco" for a reason.. Seth Enslow type. You can't kill an event because one guy took it too far IMO. Silva is an outlier and his crash should be treated that way IMO.

That double back flip did NOT look good...at all...awful.

Don't those guys build and choose their own lines on that mountain? So its not that "rampage" went to big...rampage/red bull/whomever didn't build the course...its that the riders are going too big.  Guys like that are ALWAYS going to push the limits, always going to go bigger, always...that's just who they are...and sometimes it goes horribly wrong...Prayers to Adolf and his family.

That double back was so gnarly. It seemed like every aspect would need to be perfect to even stick it, much less ride out of it. Absolutely insane to go for that. So much force involved.

I can respect the skill and balls of steel but…..the risk/ reward seems skewed…

while I agree the reward isn't enough, riders do this kind of stuff for no reward. They are adrenaline junkies.

Freeride MTN biking and Freeride Skiing/Snowboarding) are probably 2 of the gnarliest sports out there with huge risk factors and little to no reward other then personal accomplishment and respect amongst peers.

I don't follow freeride mtn biking that closely. Is freeride mtn biking at the same point now, that FMX faced a decade or 2 back? Where progression can only go far, and has to slow down a ton just becuase thats the limit of the sport?

Also chalk me firmly in the "athletes know the risk and make the choice" camp. Its kind of crazy to me that a bunch of mx people would not understand everyone has their own risk reward equations, and what doesn't make sense to you may make sense to someone else.

Risk-Reward is a thin line.   Somewhere along the way Darwinian genes hafta kick in or it gets messy.

Me and gravity have an agreement,  Ive held up my part of that deal and for that reason Im still here.

Rampage is getting near Isle of Mann TT range for risk vs reward

while it continues, its up to the riders to make the call, they know the risk,

I haven't watched the event yet, but I've seen quite a few of the practice runs. Seems like everyone's lines carried a lot more speed this year than in the past couple of years.

What scares the bejeezus out of me are some of those extreme urban downhills. Some of the openings that they go through at high speed looks like it’s less than an inch wider than the bars!  And every now and then you see someone’s dog just wander onto the course, usually at the fastest section or in the middle of about 10  straight stories of stairs!

One off event and features. To much building going on and not enough real free ride, using the gnarly terrain that the event became famous for. These huge built up take offs over a huge gap to a huge built up landing is more evil Knievel style stuff. I wish they would use more tech maybe less consequential features. Like it started

Lower back injury with no explanation is ominous, especially with No mention of movement or feeling in the legs.

Well, he looks happier than I would expect a new paraplegic to be, so I'll hold out hope.

I agree...still not perfect news...but I thought he would either be dead, in a comma, or paralyzed from the neck down...so moving his arms, being alert, sitting up smiling...that's still a relief to me.

Adolf Silva - Road 2 Recovery

Sad news for Adolf, as he has no feeling from the chest down. Some of these guys are able to make some amazing recoveries, though. Praying for the best, and hope his sponsors stand by him.
