When you look at who owns Disney/ABC, and what they want to do in the future you can see exactly why they did what they did. It's all about acquisitions that need FCC approval. The story about losing money is just that, a story.

But keep thinking those shows were losing money. Did you know that on paper "Titanic" still hasn't made a profit?

EDIT: Not directed at you Borg, but more a general comment on the thread.

I have seen ratings comparisons and they both lost a huge amount of share. Are you saying that they are still making money, just not as much, or is it something else?

Just trying to understand.

Hi Karl, I'm glad you're back. This place is better with you around for sure.

There hasn't been one studio movie or tv show, variety or scripted, that has ever "turned a profit" on paper. Not one dam thing. The studios bury every single cost and expense imaginable into the profits that are actually generated by 'insert show here'. Pencils, toilet paper, painting buildings, buying new studio vehicles, etc..., none of which were an actual expense the 'insert show here' incurred.

There is a reason the talent that has actual power gets "gross profit participation", because there isn't ever a backend net profit. Ever. Titanic has earned billions of dollars more than it ever cost to make and market, yet it is still in the red according to Fox and Paramount, who share domestic and international revenue.

Kimmel nor Colbert were losing money in reality, but on "paper" they were. ABC/Disney saying otherwise is just them covering their ass in the event of a lawsuit, which I promise you is coming.

Thanks, Travis.

I see what you are saying. Seems like ABC was looking for a way out of Kimmel's contract, and found one.

It's strange to me that the execs couldn't tell him to knock off the "talking head" stuff, and stick to comedy, even if it was political comedy.

It's like going to a concert and getting a political opinion speech. Makes me one and done, not getting anything more from me.

The land of the free, and freedom of speech is under attack. Comedians like Jimmy Kimmel got suspended indefinitely by ABC, Stephen Colbert his 'Late Show' is getting pulled in May and all due to one man: President Donald Trump, who has now set his sight on Jimmy Fallon and uses all his power to get him cancelled by NBC. NPR calls it censorship by proxy.

Because it is natural that these major television stations bow to the current president demands, especially after his new threat to revoke broadcasting licenses if they do not do what he wants. You know like they do in current Russia, North-Korea, China and other countries where freedom of speech is worth nothing. That the FCC has a Pro-Trump chairmen will make this even a very real scenario. Not a far fetched idea.

Painful that Trump his fragile ego can't take a joke and is willing to take such outrageous actions, to stop the mocking. But stopping the support to a regime that is, as we speak, organizing an ethnic cleansing and this for almost two years already. That is something he doesn't want to take actions against. Same as taking actions against Brian Kilmeade who claimed that mentally ill homeless people should get an involuntary lethal injection. He is speaking about 594.000 voiceless people, but luckily not about President Cheeto. Otherwise he would be fired, cancelled or the broadcasting license of his employer could've been revoked!

Don't want to hear about what-about-tisme. But if you see this evolution, is this the new "Greater America?" Where foreign journalists get threaten that such a critical question won't be good for their home country, threatening and getting comedians fired, threatening broadcasters to pull their license...

I missed where he said anything about Kirk.

Have we now reached the point where anybody that is upset about anything , is disrespecting Kirk's death by not writing a tribute out to him before venting about their current thing?

People can be equally upset about  multiply things, and I would bet that if everything people are saying about Kirk's defense of freedom of speech is true, that he would be right there alongside  Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson, Ted Cruise and the other conservatives  who really believe in freedom of speech and are not just going along with the political BS their chosen side is saying.

At best, the government ( Trump and the head of the FCC) are trying to make it look like they are behind Kimmel's  suspension. And at worst they are behind it.

Before somebody starts bringing up any other times the government has done something like this, I am unaware of those times and if there is similar proof, I have the same opinion that it is wrong. Whatever that's worth.

I think that bringing back the fairness doctrine could fix a lot of the selective reporting that is done by a lot of media that leans one way or the other.  My mother was a talk radio host when it was still around. And giving equal time for each party seemed to help prevent a lot of the heavily partisan reporting that happens these days.

If You watch some sound bytes from Fox, CNN and MSNBC , You can often hear what sounds like 3 different quotes as each is edited a little differently. Starting later, or ending earlier. I see it happen often.   The most recent example I saw was on Fox when they showed AOC talking about Charlie Kirk. They clipped the beginning where she spoke against his killing and only used the part she said she disagreed with stuff that he had said.  I don't remember which channel or channels showed the entire clip. But I've seen it done to Trump on MSNBC. And it takes context away from something said.

That along with people being unwilling to criticise members of their own political parties is tearing us apart.

Not that I am an industry insider but I was told less than an hour ago that Kimmel was warned by ABC about something and he did it anyway. The person I was talking to happens to be a producer. He said that's what he was told.

For whatever that is worth.

It doesn't help anyone that "newsies" seem to all get daily talking point memos, and they use them.

Remember when Obama was running the first time? I had never heard the word "gravitas" before and one day every talking head was saying how much of that he possessed, for weeks on end. Same thing happens when it's not flattering. Until recently, the only time you heard about nazis was when someone was talking about WWII. Now it's used in every day speech and is quite inflammatory.

These things are irresponsible and news executives should forbid it. It just furthers the divide, and causes harm.

With the internet and so many things changing, I'm not sure how its done now.

But at one point ALL stations that wanted to get it would get an AP ( associated Press)  feed with basic  news that was then taken by local producers and rewritten to be used for the local reporting of national news. Also if somebody sends out a press release ,like with moto meadia everybody gets the same thing and can use it to report on that subject. The buzz words could be coming from something like that.   The stations do not have to report anything at all that comes across the AP reports, its just a way for stations to get big stories out at the sametime as each other if they decide to use it .

The associated Press is funded by the members and is global . The AP doesn't allow news to be reported with the opinions of the reporters . Its dry basic stories. With no opinion based reporting allowed.

While all of the 24 hour news channels have a large amount of opinion based reporting so You get stories reported in a way that  can skew them.

Look up Nexstar and see what they own and where they want to go. While they may not "own" Disney/ABC, they are the biggest broadcaster of local network programming in the country. They can't fart without FCC approval, and like any company, they want to continue to grow their footprint in media.

@borg I don't doubt that happened, and I'll defer as I don't know anybody in nighttime tv.

Right, left, up or down, the hyper-consolidation of media in the last 30 years has irreparably damaged this great country of ours.

Again, if you actually knew the real details and weren't buried in partisan politics you'd know it wasn't the Obama's, or the Clinton's, or even Mickey Mouse, it was Rosanne Barr's tyrannical attitude towards the cast and crew of her show. She was an absolute fucking nightmare to work with and the entire cast protested her involvement and said we are not moving forward with the Rosanne reboot if she stays.

Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner were more than over her shit and fired her, that's how we ended up with a show called "The Connors". I know all of this because my Assistant was deep in that world for many years.

What? People in Hollywood that are horrible, egotistical, and difficult to work with? Who knew? While we disagree an a lot of things, I do have respect for you so I'll believe what you say. I will however ask, why can't 2 things be true at the same time. Anyway how I read your post. She was horrible, everyone hated her, but put up with her because she made them money. BUT, in the end, they used her words to get rid of her. Hmmm

In this particular case, I'm sure both things are true. Good point.

The number of real asshole Producers and showrunners in my business has thinned in this new, safe space age, but they still exist. I know of a couple showrunners who are borderline psychopaths, but they make their overlords money, so a lot of stuff gets swept under the rug.

I for one, cannot wait to get out of this world and I have it pretty good.

How convenient they are blaming Trump for Kimmel being cancelled. His ratings have declined over 50% in the last ten years. In the coveted advertising range of 22-54 year olds it’s decline a staggering 75%.

Disney was just waiting for a reason to kick that turd to the curb.

Colbert show was losing a staggering $40,000,000 a year.

It wasn’t Trump that cancelled Kimmel and Colbert.

Capitalism cancelled them. Both are bad for business. Both had staggering drops in viewers. Both were losing millions of dollars a year.

Good riddance.

For Kimmel it’s like being clipped on a forum. If anyone comes out and says something like that, obviously they’ll get clipped. Besides, it was basically his employer that had issues with what he said. I mean cmon, “…got himself killed…you can’t say stuff like that.”

So your position is, you're more upset that Jimmy got fired for his words than Charlie getting killed for his words? And BTW, if he got fired for "his words", his "words" were "disinformation" which your side worshiped under Biden. Mention Trump and you're banned from youtube? Remember that? Or conveniently forgot?

Not that I need to justify "not mention Kirk" in this topic. But if you really want to know, freedom of speech is for me untouchable as long if you don't tell people to riot for example. That is also why I've posted this on my personal twitter when the shooting happened:

I've seen the full debate between him and the Cambridge students. More debates like that was something I was looking forward to in the future, because those high school/college debates in the US where too easy for him. But the big debates with high educated students who are leading their field, was something I really was looking forward too. But it won't happen sadly enough, because one idiot who felt insecure due to what Kirk said, felt the need to silence him.

In that matter is President Trump is almost equal to Tyler Robinson. The only difference is that Tyler Robinson didn't had any power he could use, and chose a bullet. President Trump instead always uses his power and leverage that he has as president; but aren't mend to be used for futility like this, to silence all comedians and journalists who are being negative about him and saying things that make him feel insecure...

Kimmel’s employer terminated him not Trump. Same with Colbert. Same with lots of people. Kirk was killed for what he said (although no one can say what is was that was so hateful about CK). People were fired for what they said. It’s all equal right? Sounds like people like CK and conservatives are experiencing lack of freedom of speech, rather than the other way around.

There are real attacks on free speech - like the UK. But no comments on that. Of course the British press has always been notorious for horrible lying, corruption, and attacks.

If you're a real Christian like he claimed to be, you can't be against free school meals for example (he was against). We all know the multiple stories in the Bible from Jesus creating from five breads and two fishes, enough food to provide 5000 people (Matteüs 14:13–21).

Kirk opposed the Civil Rights Act, calling it a “huge mistake” and he endorsed the alt-right racist theory of the “great replacement”. That is also why he was demonizing women and couples who chose not having kids. Woman have only one real job and that is to breed. Saying that black people doesn't have the brain power to be taken seriously, that seems hateful. Lets us be honest some of his world views where close to or very extreme and sometimes even vile towards some communities, demographic groups, ...

But all that is being said in the context of freedom of speech. If people weren't happy with something or thought it was racist they could've gone to the legal system with their problem with his takes. Killing someone because he simply hasn't the same view on the world as yourself is unacceptable. The same goes undoubtedly for a president who silence his opposition, by putting pressure on their bosses. It are only weak leaders and spineless people who can't handle opposition and satire on their behave.

Hmmm... I don't remember seeing any thinly veiled fake outrage from Matti from the numerous other examples of infringement on freedom of speech we've seen the past few years:

The simple reason: It wasn't the president of a country that was behind that arrest. It was a trans-activist (Sophia Brooks) who went to the legal system and claimed that this wasn't "freedom of speech" anymore but that it encouraged people to feel hatred towards them. That is a tiny but important detail, don't you think?!

But censorship on internet is getting worse and worse but that is the what-about-tisme what I called in the first post. The European Union is probably the worst of all. They are thinking about an online digital passport, that you will need to view porn and other 18+ websites. With other words the government wants to know what you like from porn, alcohol, gambling...

Edit: @3 Tres On your list is one voted bill in Canada, one attempt from Sleepy Joe and one poll where they asked the democrats: "Do you want to censorship the social media" in a period where they are getting their ass kicked by Trump on social media and other republican influencers. Off course do they dream about that. But till now is Trump the only one who used his presidential power for such silly things. From taking white house accreditation passes from critical journalists to pushing to fire people who are on TV, using his troll army to target critical people and even giving criticism on award shows. Nothing is too small for this president, everything is a national matter of interest...

There wasn't a selection on this poll that wasn't an obvious troll option, so I'll write my selection in...

-This Kimmel firing freedom of speech fake outrage is the most obvious crock of shit gas-lighting exercise, and in fact the closet-marxist politicians of the western world are the biggest threat to freedoms of all kinds, especially freedom of speech.

Please do some deep self-reflection on your obvious Trump derangement syndrome.

Kimmel's been a politically biased toxic hack for a while now. He went too far by implying the guy who assassinated a conservative political activist was a fellow conservative. His employer did damage control and got rid of him. I'm not sure why your panties are so wadded up over this.

How about you tell everyone what it takes to be a “real” Christian? I would like to hear your gospel.

For Kimmel it’s like being clipped on a forum. If anyone comes out and says something like that, obviously they’ll get clipped. Besides, it was basically his employer that had issues with what he said. I mean cmon, “…got himself killed…you can’t say stuff like that.”

It seems that there is a double standard, and that is never healthy. Talking about mass murdering homeless people, like Brian Kilmeade is OK?
