Travis Pastrana

Edited Date/Time 1/18/2012 5:59am
Just got done watching the multi talented Travis Pastrana on a re-run of that rally thing from X Games 16, where two guy's race head to head. Everyone kept either going the wrong direction on the cryptic, impossible to negotiate course or breaking down halfway round, but anyway.... I got to thinking about Travis.

At one time it was impossible to imagine that he would never win a 250 (450 by today's standards) SX race! Yet he hasn't. The closest he got was at Indy in 2002 while a tremendous battle insued between himself, RC and DV.

Don't get me wrong I'm not beating on the guy. We all know he's super talented and tremendously likeable. But in between all this other stuff he's achieved, most of which I'm barely bothered about (i.e the whole X Games scene sort of makes me sick and I don't really care for crazy stunts) wouldn't it be cool to see him have another shot at an SX this year?

I mean are his knees still beyond repair? I half wondered whether his body had recovered enough, and if maybe a remanent of desire towards racing again might be sparked.

Travis retired from MX because his knees were done.

I am 100% sure Travis explored every alternative for his knees but they are to far gone and a new knee would not withstand the torture a Pro MXer would put on them......and you can only get the procedure done 2 times in your life time.

It would be amazing for him to make a comeback but it will never happen. His knees are beyond repair and also the feild is stacked more then ever.

not going to happen, keep wishing.

he will still go down as one of the baddest dudes to ever step foot on a bike though.

Actually, the new replacement knees will indeed hold up in pro mx. The problem is the bone may not. The main problem with artificial knees is not the knee wearing out, it's the joint where the knee connects to the bone. These joints is glued and many times the knee will need a "revision" which means sometimes after 8-10 years it will have to be re-cemented in place. And liked you said, you can only get it done twice so TP is far too young to get it done if he wants to still walk when he's old.

Trust me, I know the drill. My wife had both knees replaced 7 years ago.

27 in MX years, that's rough on a body, think of all those accidents he had on his motorcycle, now add to it all the abuse he purposely did (nitro circus) to his body, he will be lucky if he's able to walk or get out of bed by the time he's 35. I'm sure he's happy with his career path/choice, enjoys himself plenty, you can tell he's always smiling.

Yeah I agree, you guy's are right. To be honest I knew he had knee trouble but after reading some of the responses, I didn't realise just how bad they apparently are. The guy has achieved a huge amount already, it's hard to believe. Just would've been nice to see him make some sort of unbelievable comeback into the Pro ranks. But there you go, it isn't reality.

He may still do a couple SX races in the future, but no way will be ever race a series again.

Travis isn't doing MX anymore, but he is involved in Rallycross. Last event in the U.S. this year is @ New Jersey Motorsports Park November 6-7. $20 gets a carload of people in the gate for the day. Check it out - www.njmp.com or www.rally-america.com. Dave Mirra, Tanner Foust, Rhys Millen, Andrew Comrie-Picard will all be competing that same weekend.

I'd think the amount of head injuries he has had plays a big part in it. He's been knocked out more times than Muhammed Ali!

Not sure if the multiple head injuries prevent him from..... Or help him do the thing he does like backflips off the mega ramp on a bigwheel. Did you see him get KTFO when hit with the stun gun... His head hit the ground hard!!

That was crazy, that stun gun dropped him like a rock. There was no playing up for the camera on that one.

I wanna see Travis in a 360 or 410 sprinter. That would be chaos unleashed. Just would be hard to get him in one since hes so tall. Kinda like Dale Blaney !

For some reason I don't think Travis has completely, 100% given up on the MX dream. I think people often forget the outright speed he had, and can still show on occasion.

But what's the upside in coming back to be a top-10 guy? Not really any for a guy like Pastrana. I think he'll keep doing his thing.

Only guy I have ever seen wheelie sx whoops. Extremely talented , just injury prone. I remember watching him his last year at lorettas, he got pushed wide and never let off and hit a mound of dirt off the track and used it to jump back on the track in the middle of the pack. Always wondered if anyone got a video of that or maybe saw it.

Isn't he the guy that won Speed and Style at Xgames this year? He looked pretty fast to me.

He's insane.....I think his knees are bad but must not be THAT bad.....I mean.....a double backflip can't be easy on the knees. I know he's had like 14-15 knee surgeries too. I'm pretty sure his back is the worst part. You can also compensate really well with muscle strength traing. I could barely walk a couple years back from my back injury from being a soda delivery guy. I went to physical therapy and now excersize regularly on the elliptical and rower and my back has never felt better.....and with Pastrana's training passion I think he would be fine. Turbo

His status said that he was faster at Pole Position Raceway, not at Reynard raceway.

It's not how long you live, but what you do while your alive that counts...
Travis has done more in his life already than any of us will ever dream of......
