I remember when they first implemented it there was a way to see who clicked thumbs down. I don't think they intended it and they quickly fixed it.

Sure I use them. To me its a simple way of saying I agree/dissagree without having to quote the person and make another useless post.
But I get the feeling others view the like/dislike button in a more extreme way.

I get that. But sometimes (most of the time depending on who you disagree with it) it can turn into a useless back n forth with no effort put forth towards any common ground.
I used to engage in it but I came to the conclusion it wasn't doing me any good plus the older I get the more I recognize I'm not as smart as I wish.
So i just down vote rather then engage and create a nemesis that is like a message board gnat always flying in your face.
