My wife, her mother and her sisters did a cruise up to Alaska a few years ago, but then then got off the boat and spent a week roaming around (up to Denali etc) and then flew back. Sounded like a good trip and probably much easier than driving. I really like driving and the adventure of seeing all the stuff in between so that's what I'm shooting for. We may end up doing the cruise though. I never make any hard plans anymore. We usually start with a time frame, start the trip, and then decide where we are going once we're on the road. It's kind of fun, more like an exploration. We make sure to take our passports in case the trip ends up in another country.
I just wish I could have done some of this in my younger days, although I did see a lot in my military years.
So far, what's your most memorable (for good reasons) state?

I really like the mountains so I kind of favor the western states. I think I'll always be a huge fan of Colorado and Utah. A lot of good Colorado dirt bike and street bike memories and driving the Jeep through all the mountain passes is also a great experience. Utah is just different and beautiful. But I also really like most of the other western states. Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, AZ. I still think Yosemite is tops for National Park beauty although there are several out there that are right behind it. Yellowstone, Glacier, Canyonlands, Zion etc. I've hit most of those multiple times. We've checked off about 35 US National Parks and a bunch in Canada. Speaking of Canada, it's even better up there in BC and Alberta. Banff, Jasper, Yoho, etc. The lakes and mountains up there are unmatched.

How's the drive through Canada ? Is it mainly 1 road or is there an alternate route up and down ? Like a loop. We're contemplating putting the RV's on the Ferry from Alaska back to Washington, "If" we're going to be retracing a lot of roads. Plus it sounds fun haha. Take a shit ton of time going up, then Ferry back to Wa. Or can you make a reasonable loop without adding thousands of miles ?
I don't really know what the roads are like all the way up into Alaska, which is kind of why I started this thread, but from my experience over the last few years the roads in Canada are generally way better than the roads in the US. They do a good job of keeping them up. To Alaska I think there are only a couple of roads in and I think highway 1 is the best option. There is another one 9 on the Canada side which turns into 5 on the Alaska side but looking at Google Street View that road looks like it's not in good shape.
Love the plan is no plans. We call those those sperm of the moment trips.🙂 That's how we rolled to Washougal last year, had reservations in Morro Bay the first 2 nights then wung it from there. It was one of our better road trips. We figured out we like to spend 2 nights minimum at any particular campground, otherwise you're just driving without exploring. 3 nights in cool places.
I'm leaning towards the take a few weeks going up and Ferry back idea
My dad rode a motorcycle from the US Mexico border to Alaska twice before he got too old to ride. According to him, some of the most scenic rodes that made the trip worthwhile were unpaved, but he saw several big HD tourers riding them so they were nothing too crazy. A Tesla would be doable, but you’d miss out on some really nice views if you had to stay on pavement or close to chargers.
It's funny, I was checking vital while on the Alaska railroad between Anchorage and Seward....go figure...amazing trip so far and we are only on day 2/10. You won't be disappointed!

Great train trip. Worth every penny. We did the gold star class. Better viewing cars/food. A little over 4 hours between Seward and Anchorage. We overnighted in Seward before heading back to Anchorage today.

I was conceived in Alaska and born in Fort Lauderdale. My parents drove a VW bug the whole way. Said mom almost died when sitting in the passenger seat alone and it popped into neutral and almost rolled over a cliff before my dad ran down and jumped in and saved her while she was looking like a deer in headlights. I feel like he regrets the save more each time he is forced to tell the story. Lol dam hippies.
We are planning on driving the RV up to Alaska the 2nd or 3rd year of full time RVing.
There are basically two different routes to through Canada. There are quite a few paid RV groups that book everything.

Hey Void you still thinking about a cruise ? We're discovering they're booked out a lot further than we figured. Have you bought tickets ? Might want to do it sooner than later if you haven't. The one we wanted to do only has interior rooms left. Fuck that, been there done that, balcony or bust ! 😄Can't take it with us fuck it go big. 🙃

They have ships in Washington state where you load the vehicles inside of it and have rooms so you can sleep along the way and then off load in Alaska. Not cheap but the roads are a lot bette than driving through Canada 🤣
I saw this meme and it made me think of this post. lol Any luck on booking a cruise void ? We’re not willing to stay in an interior room. Did that once, no thanks. We’re still planning on making the drive but the “Cruise” part is looking iffy.
