I was in the Red Bull compound watching the first moto with Pit Beirer and Heinz Kinigadner and when Tony cased that quad they looked at each other and winced. Then it was noticeable that he was losing ground. Pit said he still has an ankle injury from Fermo and that had to hurt. He cased it really, really hard.

Tony gave it hell be he was not quite the same after that. And Dungey never missed a beat. He has now won the last two SX titles, the last two AMA Motocross titles and now the last two MXoNs. There is no question in my mind that he's now the fastest, most complete rider on the planet right now. He may even be on the fastest MX2 riders too....

Sorry, couldn't help it. Tony did have his best game in Denver, DeSalle crashed early, Pourcel wasn't there, let alone Stewart, Villopto, Reed....

But the way he rode, there is no question he is the boss right now.

Like I said, Tony gave it everything he had and didn`t have (speed to go inside to quad) but it just wasn`t enough. Dungey just seems so calculated and consistent. Even IF they had the same overall speed (not the topic here) Dungey still owned the MX1 class yesterday. Going 1-1 in such an event with so many variables is just amazing.

I`m just trying to get across the point that AC deserves big props for going all out the way he did. 1st time I thought it wouldn`t work (which it didnt), and then he went 2nd, 3rd and 4th time - that to me shows dedication! Nagl wouldn`t even do it on his 450!

That's why you don't bring a knife to a gun fight!

Cairoli did ride well, though, considering...

Was the quad doable from the inside line AC was using ... or was it a matter of the 350 not quite having the juice to clear it? Any 450s using the inside and clearing it?

A little bit of bad luck for AC that the event was held at a track that negated any advantage the 350 might have had and favored the 450. From watching him ride, one can imagine he and the 350 might be a handful at say a really rough Lommel track or such.

Dungey is turning out to be Stantonesque in the way he handles the pressure of being team leader at the MXDN. Kid is rock solid. I actually thought AC was going to get by and we would be in for a great fight but you could see that quad really took it out of him.

Just wait till Roczen and Barcia are duking it out on 450s !!

This is why one race proves nothing, AC222 and RD5 have to race more. Being down 100cc is not good at 5500ft!!!!!!

bottom line is that they need to race more.

RD was very impressive!

I think Albertson summed it up well in the 2nd moto, saying this wasn't 100% Cairoli! He mentioned he thought RD would win, but then he said if RD came to Europe and AC's playground, he thought AC would win...

Roll on next year, and especially the following at Lommel!

It was obvious the Italian Team Manager inside his own head told him to back it down, take one for the team and bring it home in second!Wink Tongue

What's wrong with having an ego in racing anyway?
People on Vital don't like big ego's.

Any up and coming racers should learn from this. Never believe in yourself, confidence is for losers, you will be a lot more successful if you are humble and meek with low expectations.

I think he said in the interview when I was there that the last case hurt his ankle which is why he slowed down.

I'm okay with 2010 but feel strongly obstacles like the one in question are bad for the growth of the sport.....too many injuries these days that didn't have to happen.

If people feel the need to huck it, and do it so cleanly just about every lap, then that is progression. If they don't, then they are going backwards. That jump in question was awesome!!!!

But when a very good gp rider on a 450 decides not to jump it and lesser riders (championship points) do ,I think he`s got a point.

I thought I saw him clear it in the second moto also, after he cased it at least once. I've got nothing but respect for AC, anyone that will case a jump over and over just to pick up a 1/2 second a lap wants it really bad.

This whole thread is about him casing it. Are johansen and I the only ones who saw him make it?

Jesus, what was he thinking the 3rd or 4th time he was going inside on dungey before the quad?! I saw what was coming the second time around and startet yelling "idiot" at the screen! Can't believe he got away with it that many times! Say what you want about the race, but he sure gave it a lot of heart trying to pass Dungey!
No doubt, it showed a ton of heart...not much sense, but, he went for it.

I was really surprised when he launched it...and since the back half of the track was where AC was making time, I was glad to see something slow him down--not that I wanted him to get hurt, but, he definitely had sections he was really strong in.

I saw him make it from the outside. Didn't see him hit it inside, but, he was kind of way back in the pack in moto 3... Wink

AC said he hurt his wrist casing the quad 1st moto, Matthes figures he's only down ~50cc
I don't like Dungey, but I'm going to have to get used to him on the podium.... the "Boss"

If progression is getting more people injured, more people retiring and more people in wheelchairs then I don't need progression.

But then again, I know the refrain racing is dangerous get used to it right?

The only thing I am used to is accepting our sport will always be this little niche activity that those of it that love it think is the greatest. The reality is we're a bunch of dummies RE: sound and injury issues so nothing will ever really change. BTW did you hear about the WMA rider who broke her hip on the finish line jump at Pala on Friday?....the carnage continues unabated due to the hybridization of MX into some f'd up blend of SX and MX.

I agree with The Rock. I think the jump was to big. When you know the persons that's riding and know their parents etc, or even worse it's a family member riding out there it's different. Those are real persons, not just a jersey with a number and name on them.

MX is dangerous enough without those big jumps, and all the injuries will sooner or later create a reaction from the governments. If nothing else those injuries costs a lot of money to take care of, and at the same time our bikes are loud, pollute etc. We are a sitting target as it is, we shouldn't make it any easier for them.

I'm glad nobody was hurt badly during MXON, and Dungey was great btw.

Josh Coppins summed it up in an interview pre race.

He thought youthstream under estimated the altitude when building this jump and also one of the table tops which the 250's were struggling to get over.

Paul Malin said that there was bad sun strike going over that jump in the final race... if thats the case you've got a jump thats way to big and riders that can't see shit heading over it.
