The revised bill isn't much better. If anybody lives in these areas, call your senators!

None of the Bills are going to get better.  These losers will give lip service like they care about what we think but at the end of the day they are beholden to the Billionaires who pay to get them re-elected.

This problem, like basically every problem in our government, could be cured with Term Limits.

I like the idea of term limits but then they'd just spend their time in office looking to please whoever sets them up with the cushiest job afterwards. Clean up lobbying/financing first, then term limits.

Exactly.

The uncomfortable solution is first to ban lobbying and prosecute both business that attempt to lobby or put money into lobbying groups, and government ministers etc to accept lobby money. Second have a 10 year ban post government for any board position associated with any bill they had any part of in government (effectively banning the move from gov to some random board with bonus cash) and thirdly, pay politician far far more — if you want to best and brightest in government then you need to pay enough to lure them away from a far more lucrative, literally any, industry.

Good point.

I agree with nearly all of this but I think politicians should be paid the median salary of people in their districts. (Or perhaps the US average.) This would do two things: 1) encourage them to make positive changes that didn't screw the middle class, of which they themselves would now be members, and 2) ensure that only people who had America's best interests at heart would even be interested in the job.

The median salary / benefits package has always seemed like a good starting point to me. Another idea I've heard of that seems promising is doing away with elections, and having a random selection process similar to jury duty. Combine it with banning lobbying, and I think we could be a better track to representative government rather than a purchased government.

I’d prefer ‘incentives’ to limit terms so that more ‘regular’ people could become elected representatives.

Something along the lines of anyone who retires at 8 years as a representative or 12 years as a Senator gets double their salary for the rest of their life and health benefits also. It might sound expensive but it would probably end up being cheaper than what we end up with now in the long run. Make it so that a successful 40 year old can put his career and/or business on hold to serve and not have to rely on ‘donors’ to live on after they are out of office and we might start getting better representation.

If a politician wants to stay longer, then reduce their pension payments accordingly.

The biggest problem with something like that is that they all have about the same amount of minimum expenses when they are serving in DC, but the median incomes vary wildly.

In Washington State, the highest average income district is about double the lowest average income district. The lowest average income district is quite a bit larger in size, though, so it could cost even more to actually get out to serve the constituents.

Both median and average are massively swayed by the extreme wealth of the 1% so neither of these are a good measure of much.

We need to entice the best and brightest into government where their mandates is to make the lives better for the majority of Americans… the current situation is a pretty non flashy salary but endless corruption opportunities and we have a government filled with corrupt scumbags and assholes… remove the corruption, lobbying and post political ‘career’ opportunities and what are you left with? A job no one wants with no upside… so the country will be run by who??

Pay politicians well, pay them extremely well, but just make sure the salary is coming from the people so they are paid to work for the people — not from some fucking lobbying firm ensuring the politicians you elect work directly for a lobbyists interest…

Median is not swayed at all by the massive wealth of the 1%

Average (mean), of course, would be.

I could get onboard with this.

If you pay them too much, then getting re-elected has too much value (though it already does), which means politicians are more motivated to keep their jobs than to benefit their constituency.

Yeah fair…

But do you base it only on the wages of the citizens.. if so, there’s issues

If the only incentive is wages then say goodbye to services right… if the incentive is only full time wages then their will be manipulation in how your count wages — with the rise in gig work, surely that won’t count, or anything under full time won’t count and self employed won’t count and contract workers won’t count etc etc  as insecure jobs take up more and more of the work they will be further disenfranchised… politicians will be incentivized to increase this problem.

And to raise wages every tax cut, paid for by a service cut is money directly in the pocket of the politician.

Incentivizing short sighted political choices.

How do you incentivize long term country benefiting policy making…? Things that increase quality of life, improve infrastructure, improve international relations and not add trillions to the national debt… obviously we all agree banning lobbying and getting billionaires out of politics is step one — so let’s start there
